RE: More Problems for Hershey

Sounds like with a bit of rest and the drugs will help Hershey..sure hope so. You might consider not only Cosequin DS but also Duralactin..the latter really helped our yellow Lab after she had elbow surgery. That was nearly six years ago and she gets a total of 3 Cosequin DS, two Duralactin a day plus a MSN with her evening meal.(Both can be bought over the internet.)(She gets two meals a day). For the past year, she has been on a third of one pill of meloxicam (the human equivalent of metacam and a ton cheaper) with a pepcid ac every other day. We have blood tests done twice a year to make sure that the meloxicam isn't harming her kidneys and liver. She walks at least a mile every day and this fall did a 7 mile hike without a hitch! We also swim her in lakes during warmer weather and take her to the doggie pool in Englewood when we are in the metro area. Have you taken Hershey to a doggie pool? It really might help his arthritis and the dogs seem to love the indoor pool. I think there is one in Boulder too and Alameda East but both might be really pricey..The pool in Englewood is $8 after the first swim.. just some thoughts that might help your boy out! Don't give up on getting him better! Our thoughts and best wishes are with you all.

RE: Loppy's challenges - x-ray results update 12/3

Our prayers and thoughts are with you and Loppy. We've had vets tell us they thought a lump was malignant and it was benign and another thought it was benign and it wasn't. So here's to hoping in this case the same thing happens and the lump is benign!

RE: My Buddy Is Sick :(

So sorry to hear that Hershey is feeling poorly. Sure hope the vet helped him out today. Wanted to mention if you put him back on metacam, you might check with your vet to see if he/she would prescribe the human equivalent..meloxicam. Your vet would have to tell you the dosage.. our 58-60 lb lab gets a 1/3 tablet every other day (with a pepcid ac tablet) for her arthritis and it seems to work well. Meloxicam is very cheap compared to metacam.. something like $8 for 90 tablets..will be sending positive thoughts your way.

RE: losing a friend

So sorry to hear about your losses. They are so hard.. Two months ago, we lost our old girl when an undetected tumor attached to her heart burst... it was so hard to see her die but at least we were there. While hard on you, it may have been a blessing that your youngest went very fast. But loosing two so quickly and suddenly leaves such a huge hole in your heart. Hope that time and your other dogs will help you through this difficult time.

RE: Struggling with decision

My heart goes out to you, your husband and Winston. The decision is so hard but having said that, you will know when the time is right..and only you will know when that is. We took our 12 year old Lab with us on our 2 week vacation this summer..earlier in the summer, she had two operations to remove a cancerous growth on her leg and the second time the margins came back clean. At times on our trip, I worried about her as she seemed a bit tired but overall I think she had a great trip.. and was with her daughter and her human family. When we got home, she trotted around the house with a huge grin on her face, She was happy to be home. Five days later she was dead. Apparently, she had a tumor attached to her heart which burst. Our vet tried to save her and did on a Sunday night, but the bleeding resumed and she died a few hours later at home with us at her side. Two hours before she died(an hour before our vet appt early in the morning) she died. My husband and I both knew then (two hours before her death) that we would have to put her down. But until that Sunday night, she was happy, eating, and hiking. Her quality of life was important to us... which, we think she had, had up until the last few hours of her life. Had I known what was going to happen after the vet saved her, we might not have taken her home. But at least she was with us..Good luck with your decision. I think you will know when the time is right for Winston. My thoughts are with you.

RE: Durango. What to do in October w/ kids?

Be sure to check the dates when you will be in the Durango area. Hunting season (rifles) in most of October- but there are a few days when the season isn't open. So be careful if you venture into the national forest.

RE: Pet Ramp to get into RV, etc.

Sorry to hear about the health issues of your standard poodle...We have used Petstep for five years or so and it is very sturdy and folds in two.It is made of heavy plastic and to clean it you can just hose it off...and I thought would be better than to have a ramp carpteted. When we first got the ramp, I backed over it forgetting I had used it to get one of the dogs in the crate. It still works! We use it to get our Lab in and out of the truck, in and out of the 4runner and in and out of the trailer. Works great. Our lab had a stroke to the spine about 18 months ago, leaving her left rear leg not fully functional. Hence, the use of the ramp really works great. Our old girl liked the ramp too as she was 12 and I didn't want risking any injuries for her to jump into the seat of our Tundra truck. A few treats, and the dogs learned to go up and down the ramp easily. Our old girl, and her daughter really loved the trailer on our two week trip this summer. We had two compfy dogs beds in the trailer and that's where they slept off the hard floor. I understand what you are going through with your standard.. we lost our old girl shortly after we got home from our trip- to cancer. But she so loved the trailer and being with us.

RE: Why is RVing so great?

Just a couple more thoughts you might consider. We are new to rving; got our 29 foot trailer, including the hitch, late spring. We too are more the national forest and park types.. had always backpacked or car camped before. What we didn't think about was that in national forest campgrounds or national park campgrounds, size matters..there are not always a lot of spaces to fit even our trailer unhitched.. a bit smaller probably would have been better for us except for our two Labrador retrievers.. we love the layout of the trailer (K-Z Spree) and the dogs love it. Storage space does matter. We were amazed at how the space filled up on our two week trip. A "pantry" closet is especially nice. The other thing I'd mention, that the veterans all know, is it gets very tiring and old moving ever day.. we will another time find a couple of spots to "camp" and explore the area from there. It takes longer to get places hauling a trailer! But, the dogs loved it! And, we stayed in a couple of private campgrounds with close neighbors and it was quieter than a couple of the county/national forest campgrounds.. something we hadn't anticipated but liked. Good luck!

Newbie needs help:wax/roof cleaning/black streaks

We are about to clean the trailer, which will be outside, for the winter and have several questions after reading various posts: 1. what is the easiest, good wax to use for a fiberglass trailer ( 2009 KZ Spree)? We washed it after each trip with Mequiar's Gold Class car wash, but haven't waxed it. 2. What is the best product to use to get the black streaks off? I've read to be careful about abrasive products. 3.Is there some way to prevent the black streaks? 4. What should the roof be washed with, should it be waxed and if so, what is a good product? I'd really be interested in hearing from Spree owners especially about the roof. Thanks!

RE: Place to stay in the Port Angeles WA area?

You might try the Dungeness Recreation Area, a county park, outside of Sequim. The campsites are nice, reservable on line and have some room in between. There aren't any hookups but there are showers.I don't know about in October, but there were a lot of kids in the campground on the Friday night we were there in August and the campsite next to us thought they were at Woodstock, singing and pounding drums! But that Monday night was very quiet.. and the ranger was super helpful when I had to take my husband to the Port Angeles Hospital emergency room on a Saturday night. The park is well kept and has trails with nice views of the ocean. We'd return again during the weekdays in the summer!

RE: NV140 Winnemucca NV to OR140 lakeview OR to OR31 La Pine

We just came through Klammath Falls to Lakeview to Denio to Winnemucca a couple of weeks ago. The Adel station looked open around 3 p.m. on a Monday and the Denio Junction cafe had gas- $3.43 for regular, and looking at the cafe's bar business, looked like it would be open into the night- we were there around 6 p.m. but didn't need gas. Then, after you turn off of 140 onto 95 to head to Winnemucca, several miles down the road on the east side there was a pretty big gas station that looked pretty new.. you might want to top off there before heading towards Denio Junction. The couple of passes we went over weren't bad, and that is coming from someone who is just learning to tow a 26 foot trailer! You shouldn't have any problem. The scenery was pretty, views expansive, and little traffic. Enjoy your trip!

RE: Great Sand Dunes National Park Campground info?

Thanks for all of the information!! We knew the park allowed dogs on the dunes and since it is a pretty short drive for us, thought it would be a good spot to spend a couple of nights, especially because other areas would have hunters...Thanks again.

RE: Checking out places to retire in the West! Suggestions?

Salida is quite a bit bigger than Buena Vista, has less snow and is warmer in general, has more restaurants, grocery stores (including Walmart) etc. We live in BV and chose it because it is smaller and we justed liked the area better. Both BV and Salida have a number of retirees but don't think either will become an Aspen or Vail. BV has a state prison which is a major employeer. It is only 2 hours to Denver, in good weather, which is good for more specialized medical care (humans and dogs), supplies etc. Salida has a small and new hospital. There are a number of writers and artists in both towns. if you love the outdoors, this is a great place to live!
