RE: Use of a portable generator for a TT

You're about to get a lot of polarized comments.
Many feel a generator should never be used in a campground.
Some feel anything goes. A 5000 watt generator is going to wake the dead. It will ruin the camping experience of your neighbors.
My personal opinion is using a generator in a campground is OK, but I also feel an ogligation to spend the money for a super-quiet model that creates the least imposition on fellow campers.
Competition has brought down prices. Spend the money for a super-quiet inverter model. Find a generic model if needed.

Bearing repack and MPG

I bought a used 1995 TT last fall, and not knowing when if ever it had the bearings repacked I just had it done.
I got to wondering,is this likely to have any positive effect on how easily the unit tows or mpg; or is it mainly a safety issue?

RE: PUP dealers are disappearing

They're the lowest profit items on the lot and take the most time to set up, move around the lot and demonstrate. I think it's probably that simple-a lot of dealers don't want to mess with them.

RE: Adjust chain type WDH

You know, this is so stupid but I thought I should clarify...
when you say "losing a link" adds to tounge weight; are we talking about from the "loose" end of the chain, or the end attached to the bar?
I was assuming we were counting from the loose end. IE, go from 3 loose to 2 loose at that end would add to tounge weight.
Thanks!

RE: Adjust chain type WDH

Great article
The dealer of the used TT did set up the shank and system so the units are very level when hooked up, but he didn't clarify what link might be most suitable to use on the chain.
The dealer of the former HTT specifically indicated, use the 4'th link.
Tv is a 2004 Yukon XL.

Adjust chain type WDH

I got a chain and bar type WDH/sway system with my previous HTT, which had a tounge weight of about 440 lbs. I was told by the service tech who installed it that leaving 3 open links and putting the fouth on the bar was about right.
I now have a light TT with a tounge weight of about 330 lbs or so.
The unit feels like it is tugging a bit...I'm guessing I maybe want to shift a bit more weight onto the hitch?
But I'm not clear if this is done by increasing the loose links before tension is applied, or decreasing the number of links.
Suggestions appreciated, thanks

Question for Aliner owners

I would like to toss out a few questions for Aliner owners-I hope that is posted here as opposed to TT forum.
I've often toyed with finding a used Aliner for long trips where travel speed and mileage are greater factors than nearby trips.
I am 6'4" and weigh 275 pounds (hopefully 250 by next summer!!!) I travel with small and rail thin but growing 9 year old boys. Mom comes only occasionally but might come for the type of longer sight-seeing trip that would be involved.
Some questions:
-is an Aliner realistic at all for someone my size plus a family?
-is the frame sturdy enough for someone of my size?
-anything you love/hate about yours?
-what floorplans "work" best? I thought the permanent bed plus a dinette might work.
-anything else I should consider? I've heard there are some ongoing quality complaints. I'd have no local service, etc.
ADDED IN EDIT:
-I'm not clear if they have grey tanks? Do you run a hose out to the sewer drain like a pop-up?
-Do they have TV aerials? We go watch football in the woods once each fall?
Thank you

RE: Thule Smart RV Rail System - Anyone have this?

That looks like a well designed product.
Just causally reading this forum for some years I've seen horror stories about hitch mounted or bumper-bracket mounted bike racks.
The best and easiest idea I ever read, and one I have used successfully is buying a couple $20 bike racks from a home store.
I just place the racks on the floor and store the bikes in the camper. It works. Of course you'd need sufficient floor space, not everyone can do this.
It's a bit of work putting the bikes in, but I'm not sure it's less work than getting a bike onto a rack and fiddling with straps and locks.
One drawback would be more work for an overnight, or popping into the rig for lunch on the road. But we don't do much of that.

RE: Air conditioner will not run on my Yamaha 2400EF

Forgot to add when/if you get the A/C going you can turn on some lights and other things...the main issue is the huge surge...but too much and you'll blow it, unlikely you will run the microwave and the a/c simultaneously...or a hair dryer, or large TV...etc.

RE: Air conditioner will not run on my Yamaha 2400EF

If you have the one I got, with the little surge ability, you can do it but understand you're PUSHING IT with A/C on this gennie.
Some suggestions:
-Make sure the gennie is set to full throttle, not variable/eco mode
-Don't have another thing on in the RV, not a light bulb
-Turn the A/C to fan first and give it a minute
-Then go to low cool
Good luck

RE: Rent your own private TT?

C.B. I am an Oshkosh native.
Yeah this thought belongs back in my skull. Just thought it would be interesting to get some opinions.
Around here some people rent them to fireworks vendors around this time.

Rent your own private TT?

A strange thought crossed my mind today;
has/does anyone rent their own private TT to other individuals?
Does it require a license? Does one need to be a dealer, etc?
Obviously the potential for major problems is there-strangers trashiung your camper, damaging it, would be very hard to resolve problems.
But now and then I see the rig sitting there and think it would be nice to recoup a little dough.
I believe there are nationwide programs re/renting out MH's but I assume TT's just don't rise to that level.

Summer parking

A friend is letting me park my TT in a lot he owns this summer as the Mrs. doesn't care for it out front of the house.
The lot is a gravel area with lots of grass and weeds growing up tall through the gravel.
I know mice etc. can be a real problem when storing in a field in the winter; I was wondering if that is a problem in the summer I should be thinking about. Maybe even ants or other bugs?
If so, what countermeasures are effective?

BAL jacks?

The used trailer I bought last fall has the scissor type BAL jacks. Every previous unit I ever had had lighter crank down jacks.
I'm not clear, can this type of jack be used for slight leveling purposes side to side? The stickers says they are not to be used to "lift tires off the ground."
Previous jacks I've had clearly said they should touch only and bear no weight whatever.
Thank you!

What to pour...down the black drain?

Hello, bought a 1995 Prowler 22LW lsat fall and just about to start using it for the summer. Man-made global warming has hit us hard in North Dakota with temps in the 50's until recently.
The unit is really clean, but I'm wondering if I ought to dump something or other down the toilet bowl to clean out 14 years of black waste use.
Any suggestions welcome, thanks-

4 cylinder C in hilly area

I live in a very hilly area of ND. Not mountains but any means but a lot of up the hill, down the hill. Enough to make an impact on towing a small TT with a Suburban for example.
Anyway, there is a nice 4-cylinder C for sale I'm looking at, but I got to wondering how it would fare in a 500= mile round trip to our favorite spot in a lot of hills.

RE: REAL basic new to 5'er ???'s regarding truck bed

What say ye to this?
Local dealer has a new 2008 Cruiser 27RL held over.
Ship weight is 6800lbs and hitch weight 1400lbs.
Cruisers have a mandatory package that includes about everything but an upgrade to a 15000 A/C from a 13500 so that ship and hitch weight would be inclusive of options, but not personal cargo. About a 30 foot unit.
Not all serious on my end just figuring out ideas.
---thanks---

RE: How much expense to install a digital thermostat?

I picked up the electric heater idea a couple years ago on this forum-thanks!
I'm not a handy person...precisely what is involved in installing the digital interface?
I was planning to pay the dealer to switch while I have some other work done this spring.
