RE: Parking / Cover your Crew Cab Pick Ups

The last 6 years are the first my trucks have ever seen cover. With a good washing/waxing regimen, none of my earlier trucks ever showed it. Now, I`m fortunate to have a big garage and enjoy a clean (no snow/ice) truck every morning when I back out.

RE: how many miles on your GM 6.0 gasser????

The company I work for has had a number of 6.0`s and 5.3`s. We have not rolled any out of the fleet until at least 250K. And these are not easy miles..sales/delivery vehicles. Not a single one had any thing other than routine maintenance.

RE: Chevrolet Winter Front

I believe this style front end began with the 04`s.
The HD grille is different in 04. Not sure if it makes a difference as far as the winter front is concerned, but only the 05-07 grille is the same.
I stand corrected. The difference must be subtle between the 04 and 05.

RE: engine block heater cord

The cord on my 08 was not long enough. It barely made it in front of the radiator. So I made a 3 ft extension with 12/3 outdoor extension cord wire and appropriate ends, routed it where I wanted it, and exited thru the grille just above the bumper. When spring came, I took the extension out and zipped the main cord back where it belonged.

If your talking the HD 3/4 and 1 ton series, I believe the grilles were the same from 05 through 07.

RE: Timbren vs Airbag - revisited

I usually let the air down when set up (also out of the rear tires on the TV. I make sure air is nearby though. I relly think a person could air the bags up with a bicycle pump if it got to that. The little battery operated 12 volt pump will do the trick in a minute though.
have fun out there.
I actually aired mine back up this summer with a bicycle pump at the campgrounds. My son had a bicycle pump for the kids bike tires and water toys, and we thought we`d give it a try just for kicks. It took all of about 20 pumps per air bag. Guess I don`t really need the 12 volt pump I carry.

RE: Proper towing mirrors

With proper mirrors you sure can see behind your trailer. The only time you can`t see is when the following vehicle is very close. I think it`s a serious resposibilty to tow and use mirrors responsibly.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

I got gas in Allegan MI at the Speedway yesterday for $2.36. It`s been that way for about a week now. Others in the area have finally come down to 2.53.

RE: GM Recall

I got the notice yesterday for my 08. It will have to wait till the end of March now, since the truck is put to bed in my shop for the winter, with only comp insurance...so I`m not moving it!!

RE: 3.73 vs 4.10 ratio

My 05 with a 6.0 had the 4.10s and I never would have considered going to a 3.73. I did the switch on my 99 with the 6.0 from 3.73 to 4.10, and was darned glad I did. Remember, the 05`s still had the 4 speed OD tranny.

RE: best tow vehicle ever

My favorite was a 77 Chev K20 that I bought at an auction in 83 for Junk Price. It was really bad, very rusted, motor didn`t run, 4 wheel didn`t work, and they had dropped a tree on it. After 2 years of rebuilding the entire truck from a frame off resto, and rebuilding a rock solid 70 400 small block, it was a pulling fool. I used it hard for many years on the farm, hauling 10-12 ton wagons from the field to the farm, as well as the gooseneck livestock trailer we had. I finally sold it in 97 when I quit farming...it was getting kind of rusty again, but it still ran like a raped ape.

RE: Beds too short!

I gave up worrying about my feet hanging off the bed many many years ago. I`m 6 ft 5 inches tall, so I`ve been dealing with short beds and my feet hanging off since I was 15 yrs old...so why should the bed of our 5er be any different!!

RE: Moving/installing fifth wheel hitch

I`ve done...let me see...7 installs so far and it normally takes me just a couple of hours. As others have said, place the rails in the truck using the 5er hitch to keep everything centered. I normally set a 100 lb tractor suitcase weight across the rails to help keep the assembly from moving. Measure, measure, measure. Once the whole thing is true, start drilling with the correct and SHARP bit. For the frame holes, I usually have a friend help and use a 2X4 between the drill and fender lip for leverage. It only takes slight pressure with that amount of leverage, and I`ve never even flexed the fender. As to getting the bolts up thru the boxed portion of the frame...if you get a new set of rails and braket kit, there should be a long threaded wire that you feed thru the frame and screw onto the bolts to pull up thru. Very simple.

RE: When Dealers go WRONG!

I feel bad for those affected people, they probably never thought to follow up on the transaction. I had a similar near miss last winter when I bought my new truck. The now closed/bankrupt dealer wasn`t getting the old truck payed off as per the agreement. I kept after them weekly for 2 months before it was finally paid off. 10 days later the dealership was CLOSED. That was too close for comfort.

RE: Putting the baby to bed for the winter.... Sigh

I just got mine finished winterizing and moved into it`s winter resting place today too. The 5er is inside, not far away, and I can get to it anytime to keep an eye on things. We only use it a couple of times a year, but it`s sad when put away for the season.

RE: Mice prevention... good tips??

We have had great success with Peppermint oil. Put it on cotton balls and place it near any access point. We put them in the basement and at severale locations inside the trailer. We had a Houseboat and for the first few years fought the little devils with out success, then a freind suggested the Peppermint oil. We never had a mouse on the boat after that. Used it in out MH and both the 5ers and no mice. We buy the oil at the local Health food store.
Give it a try.
Enjoy the Road
We have had limited success with the peppermint oil. So we use the mint oil thru out the interior and storage areas, then use mothballs around the exterior by the wheels and landing gear. Great combo that leaves the 5er smelling good when it comes out of storage.

RE: Duramax-changes/over the years

With my 08 CC 4X4 with 65,000 miles on it, I get between 17 and 19 with mixed driving. When hauling my 9K 5er, I get 11 to 11.5 mpg @65 mph. Hauling my gooseneck loaded to 17K I get 11 to 11.5 mpg @ 65 mph. Go figure.

RE: GREASE GUN HELP

First and foremost...use a quality gun. After replacing the cartirdge, screw the top back onto the base but don`t completely tighten it. That should solve your problem of trapped air by leaving an air escape route. I`ve done this for over 40 years without issue.
