RE: Suggestions?

I prefer buying "previously owned" rather than new for several reasons. Number one being the dollar savings and I don't have to concern myself with warranty or which is the best or nearest dealer to buy a certain new brand from and most importantly, after all, we all live in a used coach. That being said and addressing the frame issue, I would search for a late model Carriage coach. Sadly, Carriage is out of business but they built one of the finest fifth wheels on the market, IMO. They engineered and constructed there own frames and slide-outs and used Dexter axles (not Lippert). Robust insulation throughout and they are built like a tank. If you can find a Carri-Lite model it will probably be more comparable to your present coach than the Carriage Cameo. However, the newer model Cameo's are much more upscale than the older versions. Good luck and happy and safe camping.

RE: Natural Bridge, VA

If we had just gone in and looked at the Natural Bridge we too would have not been too impressed but, we went back for the evening program and this makes Natural Bridge one of our most memorable experiences. The program is about the seven days God created the Earth, right out of the book of Genesis. The Natural Bridge was the back drop for this program with first class sound and lighting effects. We recommend this highly. Of course this was probably 10 to 12 years ago and the direction our country is heading they may no longer do this Biblical based program.

RE: Natural Bridge, VA

We stayed at a commercial CG just a few miles from Natural Bridge. That's probably been 10 yrs or longer now. If I remember correctly it is on the same road as Natural Bridge. Natural Bridge is awesome. Be sure and go to the night program, it was fantastic.

RE: Insurance Poll

I don't believe insurance comprehensive coverage is going to cover contaminated fuel. Would you expect it to cover if DW, for example, put gasoline in diesel tank by mistake? JMHO. The damage is caused by the purchase of the contaminated fuel therefore the merchant is liable. He in turn will probably turn to the fuel distributor that delivered the fuel to ultimately pay the bill. I can tell you one thing for certain after reading these horror stories, I'm going to always get a receipt from now on. So many times when paying at the pump, it will be out of the receipt paper or whatever and you don't get the receipt. Well from now on I'm going inside and demand a receipt.

Wifi Access

Do any of you know if wifi is available at the "First Monday Trade Days", Canton, Texas. We will be at the campground near the Civic Center. Thanks for any information.

RE: Has anyone's fifth wheel come unhitched when driving?

This is kind of disturbing. I thought fivers were supposed to be more secure than Travel trailers? On this thread there are 3 (maybe more) accounts of fivers coming lose. This might happen to me tomorrow (however, I do have a Bedsaver) but, I believe if you take proper care of your equipment (inspect, clean and grease/oil all moving parts periodically) and you do the proper hitch sequence and then something like this happens you will be able to trace it back to human error 9 out of 10 times JMHO! In other words you took your mind off of what you were supposed to be doing for a split second and a serious mistake was made. It's already happened to me, hence the Bedsaver! There was no major damage in my case just a good wake up call.

RE: Roadside Assistance failure

I don't think the last experience has anything to do with GS. It was the tow driver who failed. The only thing I would like to see, would be a follow up call. If the tow driver say he will be there in an hour, then shortly thereafter, GS should call to follow up. you never know what tow driver is going to do what. GS should consider such issues and give them points based on these type things. Show up late, get a point. 1 point for every 30 minutes late. 5 points for not showing up at all. After a certain amount of points, then they are drooped as a service provider. I'm sure other tow companies would be happy to see those who make the industry look bad, not get their business. I'm not exactly sure how these vendor contracts are worded but I suspect based on my earlier experience (see above post) that GS and most other ERS suppliers have a set rate they pay the vendor for certain services ex: $50.00 for changing flat, $40.00 for lock-out service, $75.00 + mileage for tow etc. The reason I am saying this is because in my situation I needed my Tow vehicle towed plus my 34' Fiver towed. My tow vehicle is a Ford F-550 a rather heavy vehicle plus the fiver. I don't believe GS could get a tow company to respond for what they were willing to pay. I could be wrong about this but in the area I live in there are several tow Co.'s that have huge wreckers we are at the junction of Interstates 20 and 59 and there is lots of business. On the other hand I was very careful when I shopped to replace GS ERS and that is why I chose Coach-Net. There is no limit per call or claim. They get you off the road no matter what it takes. JMHO after learning the hard way and sitting on side of interstate with little Grandson in sweltering heat for hours depending on someone you have made a contract with.

RE: Roadside Assistance failure

I had GS ERS for several years and used it a couple times when I had tire blowouts. It worked OK then. But a couple years ago I was towing Fiver in for some repair work to a local business (40 miles away). My tow vehicle started running hot on me so I pulled off side of Interstate and phoned Good Sam. Long story made short, they never sent anybody to help me. I got a friend to come tow my RV and bring water for tow rig and limped it back home. I now have Coach-Net.

AirLift Compressor

The Firestone Airlift compressor won't engage. I have the air bags at rear axle on Ford F550, compressor is located midship mounted to frame rail. It has Chariot custom hauler bed. I saw on Firestone website there is supposed to be individual air inlets mounted at rear bumper area so one can manually air up bags. I can't seem to find this feature on my truck? The truck has a rocker switch along with a meter to air up bags or deflate them located under dash. Does anyone have knowledge about how to troubleshoot the compressor and/or the manual air inlets? Thanks for any help, I am somewhat mechanically challenged. I bought truck used with this feature already installed.

RE: Beginner/Towing 5th wheel

Mainly we absolutely hated towing a car/dolly behind the RV. It just seems to make more sense to have a vehicle for towing a fifth wheel. We jumped into the motorhome purchase so we really want to do our homework before committing to a 5er. I am on my second 5th-wheel. Prior to that I owned 2 different MH. Started out towing a car dolly, nightmare! Finally on my second MH I got a snazzy little 4-wheel drive Geo and had her fixed up to tow all four down (no dolly). Man what a difference. I am just saying look at all your options. Someday I will probably go back to a MH and I will tow my toad 4 down. Maybe you should try this before spending all this money? Good luck on your decision and happy and safe camping!

RE: wheel chocks

I go the cheap route. I first get my measurements and angles figured out, then take a treated 4"x4" and cut two identical chocks that fit snuggly between the tires (lying on the ground). I realize this probably does little to help with trailer movement, but it will keep it from accidentally rolling forward or backward. Besides I've never had much problem with trailer movement or either have gotten used to it.

RE: 5th Wheel or TT - pros & cons

No one has mentioned Safety. The fifth-wheel design is inherently much safer towing than off the bumper. You never get the "wagging tail" phenomena and other issues you can have with a bumper pull. Fifth-wheel set-up handles better in windy and rainy conditions also. JMHO!

RE: Lug nut question?

I never check my nuts. They should not come loose if they are torqued properly. Any oil on them? Clean off and torque to specs. Have you checked to see if they are lug nuts with the tapper and not just plain nuts? Maybe the stud is pulling through the hole making the nut loose after a while. Just some things to check. Let us know when you figure it out. I never check my nuts. Oh man! That's bad. What about the noseeums, redbugs, ticks and stuff crowding in if you never check? LOL! Sorry just couldn't resist.

RE: evergreen 5th wheel

I believe this is the Brand new start-up Co. that the former Carriage employees started. All the information I have, is, this is a premium quality coach as was the Carriage. If I was in the market to buy a new fiver, Evergreen would be at the top of my list.

RE: What size Dutch Oven for family of 4 to six

I see you hail from Pennsylvania, don't know if you ever get down to Tennessee. (Great Smoky Mtn. area). Lodge Mfg. is located in Tennessee (another great reason to buy lodge, made in America). and they have an outlet store on the main expressway going into Sevierville, next to Great Smokey Mtn. Knife Works. I just recently was there shopping and stumbled across an area in back, where they sell seconds (didn't pass inspection, for one reason or other) and I inspected items and the quality was fine but the price was about a third of retail. I was able to buy several different pots and skillets and accessories for what I would have paid for one or two at normal price. I checked to see if Lodge offered these seconds online but, apparently they do not.

RE: New Reese Goosebox

I don't have a goose/fifth adapter, but a number of people here do, and I see them frequently at campgrounds. The bad thing about them is that they are hard on fiver frames, and most manufacturers void your frame warranty if you use one. The good news for you is that the new Reese adapter is approved by Lippert, the primary frame provider to the industry. The air cushion design makes it less abusive to frames. Question is, what frame do you have and does the maker allow this under the terms of their warranty? On a 2009, I don't guess that matters. bpounds is absolutely correct. These hitches cause failure in the main frame. I actually witnessed this first hand.

RE: excessive chucking need some help

I had the same problem you are describing. When I would hit a rough place or dip in road it was "hold on Gertie", just about lost my rig a time or two. Got me a FithAirBorne/Sidewinder Combo. No more chucking problems. Of course the Sidewinder has nothing to do with ride. All you need for smoothing out the ride is the FifthAirBorne.

I hope I have "FRAMED" this question properly?

Do any of the remaining fifth wheel Mfg's. build their own frames? Carriage built their own (if my memory serves me correctly) but, sadly, they are gone now. The reason I ask this question, I see a lot of post about frame failure and slide room tracking and mechanism failure. It seems to me some of the big boys in the RV Mfg. end need to address this issue. Looks like the field is wide open for an opportunist. I know I would look long and hard at a company that had enough forethought to build the most important component of the unit themselves. What say you all?
