RE: RV Caravans - Any Bad Ones?

Newxmar, Is the company Tracks To Adventure the same company as Tracks RV Tours? No, they are different caravan companies.

RE: RV Caravans - Any Bad Ones?

Economics of a caravan have been questioned here. Believe poster has not been on a caravan. A few of our examples of priceless caravan experiences: 1. Dragged our charter busses at a drag strip! (We were aboard) 2. Full police escort to the Indy 500, chartered buss went thru red lights! Plus tickets were prime (at the finish line) and we were under a roof on a rainy day! (BTW, the Indy 500 tickets were purchased one year in advance by the caravan company.) 3. Inside visit and trainer's talk to a Kentucky Derby horse training farm. Then prime tickets at the finish line. 4. Motorcycle police escorts thru Mexico cities! 5. A "rear gunner" that was invaluable in another person's breakdown. 5. Friends made for life! I could go on, but you can't put a dollar on many of the great caravan experiences.

RE: RV Caravans - Any Bad Ones?

A suggestion based on experience. Insure that the caravan is full and there is no chance of cancellation at the last minute. Several days before we were to leave on a fully paid trip to Mexico we learned that the caravan was cancelled because it was not full. I will not mention the company as we had previous successful caravan trips with them. Contacted another company (Tracks to Adventure) and they took pity on us and created one more space for us on their soon to leave Mexico trip. Tracks to Adventure did an excellent job!! Even got our money from the previous company. Wagon master had to call and report daily to the home office/owner. One day the caravan became lost which the wagonmaster reported--owner said treat them to a dinner for the inconvenience. I would use Tracks to Adventure again!

RE: Ford 460 vs V10 1st vs V10 2nd gen

Had a 1999 32" Bounder new V-10 chassis made in 1998 in Mexico that I ran 85,000 miles before a 2005 trade in. Never a problem with plugs, two electronic engine items failed early under warranty and were replace with new designs. Also last two studs on exhaust manifold were broken, but manifold never leaked. This breakage was caused by corrosion by road salt, heard Ford had a change to ss studs, but could never confirm this. In my opinion/experience the V-10 is a very good engine that Ford has improved. (I now have a Workhorse because the floor plan was not made on a Ford chassis.) BTW--Ford never made a 1998 dated chassis. In 1998 they called it a 1999 chassis.

RE: Workhorse Air Intake and rain

We have a 2005 Newmar Kountry Star with the Workhorse chassis. Had the same problem. Was close to the factory (about 3 years ago). Met with the service manager and he pulled out a fix with a list of parts from his file cabinet. Fix consists of some large diameter rubber elbows and a straight section of steel tubing plus clamps plus instructions. This moved the intake way up topped by an elbow directed towards the rear so the intake was way above the grill opening. The assembly sort of shakes, but this is OK. They could not fit me in for service without an appointment, so they gave us the parts and arranged for the dealer to install. We were still under the three year warranty. Looked like it worked, then the miss in the rain came back. Found that when the air filter was replaced the cover was not installed correctly. Front tire was evidently throwing water into the inproperly assembled filter cover joint. Does it now work under all conditions?? Haven't driven in rain for some time to know. Suggest you call Newmar and mention that they have a kit for this. Look at your under wheel well filter cover installlation. This filter is in an tough to see location. Also suggest you look at some newer Newmar/Workhorse coaches in your dealer's lot or in your park. What are they doing now in a new unit???? (Think I will take a look in the park here in FL)

RE: Painting HELP??

Do't know if you are now in NH or somewhere in the south. In the south (I know in AZ and FL plus Mexico) there are paint services that do an excellent job on site as a reasonable cost. Neighbor just had one major touch up done in FL and I have seen a full body front end done in Mexico. Climate lets them do this and overhead is low.

Replacing Halogen Bulbs with LED Bulbs

In our 2005 Kountry Star there are 5 - 12 volt halogen bulb ceiling lights using 10 watt style MR11 halogen bulbs. They run very, very hot and we did not use them for this reason. Replaced with LED lights, a comparison for the replacement fixtures are: Halogen = 10 watt, 100 to 140 lumens--life 100 to 500 hours? LED = 2.4 watts,, 120 lumens--life 50,000 hours? So the new LED lights use about one quarter of the electricity and are only warm to the touch plus have long, long life. Converted the three in the slideout ceiling by replacing the halogen fixtures with #ICM-8780LEDS-specify color--fixtures from Sailorsams.com at a cost of $34.95 for white and #37.95 for brass. Reworked two fixtures to use a IMT-ILGU4-21LED12VW, 12 volt, GU4/MR11 style LED bulb ($19.95, these are 1.5 watts, 45 lumens, the light seems adequate. A caution if you need to renew a halogen bulb, you can buy a 15 watt and it will fit---do not due this as the heat will be really excessive--it may melt some of the plastic in the fixture!

RE: What do U use to clean your auto levelers?

Why put anything on them??? They are chrome plated. Any thing you put on them just makes dirt adhere to the chrome plating.

RE: Where in the States to go to buy a Class A

Try large, highly rated RV parks in the southern US. Look in Woodalls for these parks. Call them. Many of these parks have RV storage with units for sale. Reason is that people have purchased resort houses or a spouse has passed away or can no longer drive.

RE: installing a dishwasher

Look at the small stainless steel apartment size (3/4 size?) available at Sears. We installed one in a vacation cottage where under counter space was limited about a year ago. Uses less water than doing them by hand. Is a very good and quiet dishwasher. Should have installed years ago--- maybe it was not available then. Would like to install it in MH where the clothes washer should be located, but DW says no.

RE: Workhorse Brake Failure Update

There is all this talk that the owner/application/maintenance is responsible for W-22 brake failures. But----we have the W-24 with the same type of users/conditions/maintenance without the brake failure problems. Maybe Workhorse/Bosch should look at the W-24 calliper design. What is different? Why does this design work without failures???? Seems like a simple and short investigation leading to conclusions and a W-22 fix..

RE: The old girl is back - where to start

Great redo! Suggestion while pipes are accessible. Add foam pipe insulation to the hot water pipes. Did this on my MH and hot water stays hot for a long time in the hot water lines. Also found in many cases the hot and cold lines were tied together which allowed heat transfer between the pipes/water.

RE: What the heck...something smells bad out there...

Bet the lights flashing were 12 volt which indicates a battery or battery connection problem. My motorhome does this and the cure is cleaning the terminals. Check battery water level and check the acid with a hydrometer. Clean the terminals. Also check age of batteries. The generator is 120 volt, have a generator shop check it out and service it.

RE: Kwikee Levelers Help

Check reservoir level. Maybe not enough oil--but if so where did the oil go?Usually there is little or no make up of oil necessary unless there was lots of air in the system. Or could the suction of the pump be blocked someway?????? Is it the pump making the funny noise?? Suggest you call Winnebago and get the name and phone number of the jack system. Talk to them. Doubt that it is "Kwikee".

RE: changing slide out material????

Easy job for two people and with good ladders. Search and there are instructions posted, follow them with care. I followed them except I used the "deflappers" to pull the covers off and on. On the big one I had to use the garden tractor, then I found that tape was holding it on and I tore the tape with the strong pull. BTW on my 2005 motorhome (large living room slide cover and small bedroom slide cover) the A&E white cover was delaminated and had holes in it--not a very good product. The A&E replacements were very expensive for material that did not hold up. I went to a boat/truck cover canvas place and we worked out a heavy duty canvas alternate that was tan to match the coach and spent half of the A&E price (for what I believe is a better product).

RE: Now the questions begin...

Beep could be the warning of low oil level in the jack hydraulic reservoir. Had a gas Bounder where this was very sensitive and reservoir had to be filled to almost overflowing. Yes, the "beep" would continue when driving and be annoying.

RE: What year did Ford introduce the V-10

The 1999 Bounder we purchased in November of 1998 and delivered in December 1998 had a chassis and V-10 that was 1999 model year built in Mexico in September of 1998. There was no model year 1998 Ford F-53 chassis!. Yes, the V-10 was in other Ford products before this date. BTW, we put 85,000 miles on this chassis with only minor problems covered by the Ford warranty.

RE: Work Horse Chassis...real world experiance Question.

Previous 1999 Ford chassis satisfied owner with 85,000 miles and 2005 Workhorse W-22 satisfied owner at 40,000 miles. Much mis-information, false opinions and comments by non-Workhorse owners here. Many motorhome owners relate to their automoble experiences and they own/drive a truck with a fully loaded house on it. Quite a difference. RE: Flat tow without removing battery fuse

Have towed a Honda CR-V for a number of years without removing a fuse or having supplemental wiring. First, have a premium high amp battery, watch the battery voltage by a cigarette lighter plug in voltage meter, turn off the braking system (SMI)and key at night, and do the required proceedure 3 minute run each morning which keeps the battery up. I do carry one of those emergency batteries just in case. Have let the engine run in neutral for a while when towing to charge the battery--when I forgot the icebox and left it on draining the battery. So, no fuse to mess with and the radio keeps the settings.
