RE: Shower fixtures - why are they so bad?

"Nope, they aren't reading. We are converting a schoolbus, you would not believe what we have spent in plumbing for this thing. I am keeping a spreadsheet on the costs. All PEX water lines and apparently the fittings are "gold" coloured because that's how they are priced! " What price plastic? Yes those fittings are expensive and so are the fixtures. The prices for all hardwear is out of control. Passenger side power mirror from GM ,glass only, $78; on line $12. The whole PW about $500; on line about $100. Same place your plumbing fixtures are made. All from China. What would we ever do without China? The public is hoodwinked. Still on a $10000 TC plumbing is the least expensive but the most expensive if it has to be replaced.

RE: Shower fixtures - why are they so bad?

Fixtures should be the best that money can buy. They are the cheapest part of the RV. Could be that parts can't be bought in Home Depot. So RV'ers are slammed with hard to find expensive JUNK from RV suppliers only. Just try to find stems for older faucets. At least RV buyers should be given an option. My Airstream had all copper plunbing with a kitchen faucet that looked new after 34 years! I hope builders are reading this because I am mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore!!!

RE: Propane 20# Tanks Short?

Tanks guys. I exchanged tanks because my tank didn't hold the regulator correctly. I also did not want to use my new tank on this trip. Found this site that explains the whole sorry tale. http://www.elivermore.com/propane.htm#Interesting

Propane 20# Tanks Short?

Has anyone found exchange propane tanks underweight? I also found one that did not hold the regulator tight compared to a new one. If anyone swapped one at a big box store you know it is difficult to diagnose weight or problems on the spot. Refill stations are not that easy to come by. What is your experience?

Not again: Android vs I Pad

For verbal communication I use a Trac phone. Looking for a easy way to access the internet ( windows 7 or 8) on the road with a small tablet. I could take my LT but would prefer something in the 10" range for portability. Do to bugdet restraints Mcd's or similar will do when I need internet. I do have NetFlix. A good feature would be a DVD playback. I know that I can buy a DVD player just for that if it becomes a passion. Other than any of the above I could learn to read. Any suggestions?

RE: can't find mini air conditioner

My woes. Previous owner cut hole through the left side of the camper at floor level, where I presume a batt. access door was originally. It is under the wardrobe compartment near the door. I think he used his teeth to cut the hole. I had to cut the bed liner to fit it in. Unit came with the deal. Looks good; doesn't work. I believe the thermo limiter cuts off the compressor eventually. Blower works. Theory: there is not enought air circulating around the unit since it mounts inside the bed. Not too much of a problem for me because I hate CAMPGROUNDS and never have 110.

RE: are black water tanks required?

No restrictions at Walmart! Maybe they figure that their facilities are free! They frown on showering in the mens room. No sense of humor. Sorry guys tired of rules.

RE: 99 Ram w/ 97 Sun-Lite

Sad state your roof is in. Been there done that. Do a search. Their are more that shared your misery. I'll see if I can dig up my Photo bucket pix. I put a foot long steel 10 gauge plate under the torque plate in the rear of the camper and a center plate to stiffen the wood frame. Holes drilled to match the existing. This was all bolted to the new fram with lag screws. Two machine screw bolts went through the new plates, torque tube bracket and the plywood frame and were bolted on the outside. The bolts were backed up with Al plates on the ouside of the skin. Bolts were also used on the side of the bracket. All other fasteners were lag screws. New larger shims were added on the both sides. This job was done while the roof was till on the TC. You will notice, in the picture, a nut welded to the bracket. This was used to put a torque wrench on the nut to turn the bracket for the alignment of the holes. No need to lengthen the crank. The roof is easier to lift after the repairs are made. http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25527006.cfm http://s1076.photobucket.com/albums/w460/niftypkg/

RE: 99 Ram w/ 97 Sun-Lite

egarnt is right. You'll regret it if the lifing system fails. The rack and pinion system is fragile. Most damage the pinion on the handle and have to replace it. Loading up the roof would place additonal stress on the torque bar. Think about it.

RE: Best Batteries to Buy?

Seems Cat batteries are hard to find without traveling some distant. While on the subject. Has anyone hooked up an external plug to charge the batteries without entering the TC? My batteries are hard to access. Don't you have a built in charger in the camper? The Mfg does not recommend this converter to charge the Battery. My purpose is to use a charger during extended storage. Currently I move the charger into the TC and hook directly to the battery.

RE: Best Batteries to Buy?

Hello expert truck campers. I've decided that one step toward lower stress is to just replace my two maintenance-free 3-year-old batteries and have the charging system checked out. Then at least if there is still a drain problem, I have a chance of isolating it by process of some elimination. That being said, what is the best brand to install, and what is a typical price? Thanks again! Dave Charge 'em up and have them tested. You may get pro-rated replacements or better yet new replacements especially for WM batteries. Probably not your charging system if the truck batt are OK. If the batteries check out then leave them disconnected from the TC to see if they discharge. Go from there. Much discussion on this site of what batteries you need for your camping style. Best batteries in the world will not last if poorly maintained. Sealed batteries may be what you need if they are in the TC and not ventlated.

RE: Home Made Tie Down Shock Absorbers ???

I did it the hard way. Bought a set of SS Happyjack shock absorbers on THE auction site ($100) and adopted them to my home made frame mounted system. I just take the slack out of the chains to add tension. My TC is sitting on a rubber pad and doesn't move.

RE: There Used To Be A Lot More Activity On The TC Forum??

What has happened to everyone? Has the economy turned so bad that most sold their TC? It's something I've wondered about a lot lately. It seems like most would hold on to their TC seeing that it could be something to fall back on if you loose your home. :h That was the question. I answered the question and in doing so I think I helped to promote more posts as the feedback implies. Yes camping is expensive and I laugh when I see million dollar motorhomes parked next to my humble TC in the same drab truck stop. ( ...or parked in a motel lot for a day of rest.) I too spent many nights with the kids in a tent and enjoyed the beauty of Vermont, Texas or Florida. I also promoted recreation camping when I joined a C-C membership but I am also mindful of the lousy way management treated their members. Left that for off the road and a breath of fresh air. I broke free of the bounds that stifled my traveling. I mentioned CG's becoming too expensive even state parks. Why? Even with volunteers the parks still need a state employee to "manage". Then an associate manager and a maintenance crew and of course a director. Owners of the big rigs use their own facilities anyway. Big government. I once walked out of a state Texas CG office because too many questions were asked. How about all those other parking lots that are called campgrounds. One comes to mind. Can't say I have much money tied up in a rig and never did but I enjoy what I have and go my own way. To further answer the quesdtion let me give an other example. When I owned an Airstream I posted on that site and still do. Now I post on this site. Perhaps someone there is asking the same question.

RE: There Used To Be A Lot More Activity On The TC Forum??

Thanks Jefe 4x4 for stating the aging factor beautifully. But at age 76 I still play racquet ball solitare and win every game. Makes me feel good to use up the overstock of Bengay. Now fitting fireproof wings to my TC.

RE: There Used To Be A Lot More Activity On The TC Forum??

How many TC manufactures have gone belly up? Cost vs other vacations? Price of gas vs flying? RV retailers gouging owners for parts? Fed up with campgrounds charging $$$$ for a 10x30 spot. Greed. I can rent a room in a **** hotel for the cost of some campgrounds! The proliferation of time share facilities replacing camp grounds? If I couldn't boondock my TC would be over the cliff. Aging adventurers not being replaced with hardy stock? Are we getting soft? Fed up with the constant barrage of ads fouling up the Internet? Educators turning out fewer typists?. Can't leave the TV to travel? More TC'ers moving to plush motorhomes? I see more for sale signs on RV's since the price of fuel has risen. What mileage do you get with your RV and what did your TC cost? Camping clubs have swindled members and drained enthusiasm to buy or participate. I belonged to 3; now none. Sorry I tried that version of club owner ship and soon discovered the gimmick. Who needs them? More campers moving to trailer parks to rid themselves of costly gas guzzelers and upkeep of home ownership.( Taxes, maintenance and declining values.) Did I leave anything out?

RE: 99 Ram w/ 97 Sun-Lite

Great swinging post. I have a '93 Sun Lite with the same layout. Yours is/was in much better shape than mine. I had the same problem roof leak. Tore out the old vent and installed a Fantastic Fan. I had to remove about 3" of interior foam and plywood to rebuild the framing for that. Miserable job. One benefit was when lowering the roof with the fan on full exhaust and the camper door/window closed the vacumn pulls the canvass into the camper nicely. Some sag in my roof but not enough to require more than what I did. I see quite a bit of sag at the vent opening from your pixs. Search for other posts of of roof removal. Good info there. The big fix for me was installing steel plates at the rear torsion bar brackets. The tension on the brackets caused them to twist and break through the roof. I also replaced the wood framing they attached to. Another miserable job. My Sun lite is mounted on a Ford 2000 F-250 Super cab diesel, stick shift.
