RE: what would you get?

As far as RV's, I would keep my Bird. There isn't another RV being built today that I would trade it for. As far as additional toys, the first would be a Grumman HU-16 Albatross configured with a yacht interior.

Born and bred in the mountains of WNC. Left when I went into the Navy, and when I finally got back I swore I would nail my feet to the ground so I would never leave again!!
Living in Lincolnton now.

RE: To leak or not to leak (Slide Out Stories)

I owned a 2006 Jayco with a single slide that has never leaked. I have had a 2009 Holiday Rambler Alumascape with 4 slides for less than a week with no leaks but I have driven in very heavy downpours and have been parked in heavy downpours with slides extended. Wow congrats on the camper with four slides, how would I love to be able to pull something like that. That must change the camping experience from a comfortability standpoint.
Thanks for taking the time to share TecheMan
Our previous fiver had three slides, and they are great until they won't retract. Before buying ask the salesman to demo how to do it manually. Not tell you about it, but DO it. You will be quite entertained.

RE: RV Crash Safety & Illusions of Safety

How much does the cut away behind the seats compromise the integrity of the 'passenger rated' cab?
The only passenger rated motor home I know of is a bus (pass rated) -prevost- newell,$$$$$$$$$$ ?
I agree with willald- tow veh and trailer is by far safest, even a class C witch is second best ,has all kinds of stuff the will come apart and clobber you in a event.
Don't forget Bluebird Wanderlodges!! :)
Very good crash safety.

RE: To leak or not to leak (Slide Out Stories)

Forget slide leaks. They are pretty rare and it would only be a little bit of water anyway. The big flood hazard is the on board plumbing, in particular leaving campground water hooked up and turned on. Many a sad guy has returned from dinner to see water coming out the front door because someone left a faucet open or a pipe burst.
We use campground water ONLY for filling the on board tank. If we leave, we shut off the pump and bleed off the pressure. If in a FHU site, always leave the gray valve open unless saving up gray water to flush hose after dumping the black.

RE: 5th Wheeler VS RV

There are plenty of things to consider, and each rig has positives and negatives. With the bus, we have a transmission retarder, air brakes, and commercial Load Range H truck tires.
On our fiver, we had electric brakes and ST tires.
For us, safety enroute was paramount. Others have their own priorities. BTW, our bus was cheaper than our truck/fiver combo. That's one benefit of owning "vintage"!

RE: 5th Wheeler VS RV

It all depends on your situation. The fiver is the best bang for the buck IF you already have a 1 ton pickup. The MH is much better on the road.
For us, we needed a way for the DW to sleep enroute. You can't do that safely with a fiver, since they have no crash protection.
Examine your personal situation, how you will use it, how comfortable you are with a complicated machine. If possible, go to an RV show and look at the various units.
Our first RV was bought new so it would have a warranty. Now that I'm comfortable working on things, I will never buy new again. The initial owner takes a huge hit on depreciation.

If you like the Gulf, then look at Gulf State Park in southern Alabama. Nice place!

RE: First weekend out - first oops with the new 5er

Don't feel bad. I once backed a RENTED diesel pusher into my house! The DW was "backing me in" and got distracted and began talking to a neighbor. I kept backing up.

RE: From a Class A to a 5th wheel

We've had both. The fiver is best at going to one spot and staying for a week. Plenty of room. The bus is MUCH better on the road and for short overnight stops enroute.

RE: Quick Connect Water Hose Adapters?

That's a good solution. Too many new folks think that city water connections make things "just like home". Any RV is subjected to more vibration than a regular house, so leaks are more likely. As I said, if the RV is unattended and springs a leak while connected to city water, the results won't be pretty.

RE: Quick Connect Water Hose Adapters?

If you don't want to come back from dinner to find water running out the front door, do what I do. I use the city water connection ONLY to fill the on board tank. All the water to the fixtures comes via the on board pump. No pressure spikes, and I shut off the pump if we leave the bus. Thus, if I do spring a leak on a pipe while I'm gone the worst thing that can happen is the residual pressure bleeds off.
If you spring a leak while connected to city water, you can get lots of water into the coach. Just my two cents.

RE: front end livingrooms

They are excellent from a safety aspect, since the BR emergency exits are close to the ground with large windows. Also, you are not sleeping on top of the generator, batteries, and propane bottles. Think about that one for a minute.
The pin weight is more, and you do give up some basement storage.

RE: Dry Ice in Non-Working Fridge

What is the reason someone would use dry ice over "wet" ice? Always wondered about this.
I guess my question is, why was it invented?
The reason it is useful is that it sublimates to a gas rather than melting to a liquid. No wet groceries!! :)

RE: Fire in TT Caused by Fridge?

I shut off the propane valve going to ours. It runs on a/c when available. We don't boondock, and typically run the generator enroute. I know that wont stop ALL of the issues with the RV fridge, but it can't hurt.

RE: Length, length, maybe not.

I shudder whenever I see all the slides in RVs. The compromises in basic wall framing strength and rigidity when interrupted with all those slide openings must be huge ... no way around it from a bare physics viewpoint.
That must be of no concern to some folks as they probably just plain trust that "if RV manufacturers offer it for sale, it must OK".
I'm reading more and more posts lately of RV folks who are going smaller in size with less or no slides and shorter overall lengths. No way would I take a large RV to the places where we go to enjoy camping in the great outdoors. Of course, we do not have kids along much anymore - just the GK's once in a while.
X2
We specifically chose structural integrity over slides. We had our share of slide failures on our previous rig and chose to get a MH without them. IMO, slides are more trouble than they are worth. They add weight and cost, weaken the structure, add maintenance and are a frequent source of leaks. If your rig is well designed, as ours is, you'll never miss the slides.
