RE: 2012 Dodge 3500 experience

I tow a 19,000 pound Newmar with 4,300 pound pin weight. I tow with a 2010 DRW Cummins crew cab 4.10 rear gears. It tows very nice and feels safe as long as I keep the speed below 65 mph. Our trailer does have hydraulic disc brakes and that seems to help immensely. The other upgrade I did that made a big difference was the Maxbrake trailer brake controller. I have had several of the best brake controller made and the Maxbrake is the only way to go imho.
The exhaust brake works great we have towed in the mountains with no problems going down the steep grades I just slow to about 40mph and let the exhaust brake do its thing. Going up the hills we slow from 60mph to under 30mph in second gear.
When the trailer was new the hydraulic brake line got a hole wore in it from being improperly installed and we lost our trailer brakes going down the turnpike at 60mph. I had not idea until I tried to stop on the off ramp and it was actually very uneventful, I am not even sure my wife realized there was a problem. I told her it did not seem to be stooping well but I had not idea the trailer brakes were 100% gone the Dodge stopped the load just fine. A MDT Freightliner would be awesome I would love to have one but don't let people tell you a one ton Dodge can not handle these loads, we do it all the time.

RE: Hello, new and need help finding the right 5th wheel

The only high-end quality manufacturer making samll fifthwheel's IMHO is Excel. They are making a 28ft and a 31 ft model. The 28ft has a 12K lb GVWR while the 31 ft has a 14K lb GVWR.
Excel Winslow model floorplans
I agree Excel would be the way to go.

RE: Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

2012 Newmar X-Aire 40DSBR pulled by 2010 Dodge 3500
Loaded ready to go with fuel and water but no toys in garage.
Gross Trailer Weight 19,100
Pin Weight 3,980
Truck weight 9,200
Steer Axle 4,960
Drive Axle 8,540
Trailer Axle 14,800
Gross combined weight 28,300
You may want to consider visiting Fifth Wheel St. and enter some numbers in the Safety Report.
I agree I would benefit from a bigger truck. That is a very good web site you pointed me to I will check it out this evening. I am 540# under FAWR and 1210# under RAWR on truck of course I am over on GCVWR. I am concerned about safety and keep my equipment in top condition and limit speed to 60 mph when towing. What are the weights on your rig it looks close to what I have.
