RE: AARP Renewal Caution

Its not just them. Watch out for McAfee. I had McAfee security on my PC. They sent me a renewal notice which I paid. I had a problem, I contacted them and in the course of discussing my problem I found out that I had already paid for the year. So I had paid twice. I ended up cancelling my subscription with them because of the problems and they REFUSED to refund me the double payment. I will never deal with them again.

RE: Alabama State Parks

We stay at Oak Mountain State Park quite a bit - it is only 10 miles from the house! It has two fishing lakes with swimmming spots, golf course, nature trails, horseback riding, lots of hiking trails. Located just off I-65 south of Birmingham in Pelham.

RE: Should we become full-timers?

Southwindsteve,
I understand what you are saying. We are in a position to sell the house and go FT. It has been my goal for several years. However, after deep reflection, I am beginning to think that a townhouse/condo (no grass mowing for us!) in the SW for winters and traveling the rest of the year might work better for us. We will have a better feel for our solution after a few lengthy trips. At least we have the luxury of being able to "test" the waters. I have read so many times "fulltiming is not for everyone", so we intend to have a bunch of fun finding out our answer!

RE: At what age should I not buy a new class A

"
"I don't know if I would live long enough to ever get it paid for."
This statement holds for all of us that buy anything on credit. The idea that some have said He could stroke out holds for all of us whether 41 or 91. So if we were all afraid that this could happen none of us should bought on time.
Didn't do it. We've had two MHs and paid cash both times, buying WELL within our means. The practice of buyimg well within our means leaves us in a secure financial position today, despite losing half our 7 figure savings in the stock market.
In all candor, I agree with the earlier poster that it is irresponsible to advise anyone in his situation (who has a GREAT motorhome already) NO MATTER WHAT THEIR AGE to get further into debt and possibly compromise their future financial welfare. It has nothing to do with age. It has everything to do with financial responsibility.
A lot of posters o this thread I feel have done so "tongue in cheek", just to provoke comment. (well, it has been fun, hasn't it?)
OP - great decision. And I think the wife would LOVE to redecorate.

RE: Anyone make a mistake buying first MH ?

We read and researched for several years before we bought a 10-yr old 29 foot Allegro Bay Class C. I absolutely loved it - it was great for what we needed but DH thought it was a bit tight on space for us and the two dogs. Unfortunately the refrigerator burned it to the ground after two years. (The insurance company just about made us whole on the unit so we were not out but a few hundred dollars). We looked for about a year at class A's. We wanted an older coach (an interim unit) and preferred Tiffin or Newmar or BlueBird. We went out of state to look at a BlueBird Bus (full of rust) and the consignment shop had an older Safari Ivory DP in just about perfect shape that came with most of the upgrades. It wasn't on our short list, but we fell in love with it and brought it home. So far so good!!!

RE: Tire Prices .. will they go down?

Look around. I just got two quotes for 9R225 tires. Bridgestones were quoted at 455 a tire (installed and balanced). Second quote was $294 at tire. I 'settled' at the second dealer for Yokohamas at $280 a tire installed and balanced at my site.

RE: What Are You Going To Do?

We bought at the end of last year. We bought a higher end older DP unit in excellent condition and paid cash. We plan on keeping her at least ten years. Since everything we have is paid for, all we need concern ourselves with is the decreasing price of diesel!
We are not really 'hunkering down' with the purchase - we could afford new (with a loan) - just are generally conservative with large purchases and like to keep out of debt. It took a while to get here and we'd like to stay. Now, we just need to Hit the Road ;-)

RE: At what age should I not buy a new class A

Think about it long and hard. You say you would have to finance it and would most likely not have it paid off at your passing. This would leave your wife with the RV Payment along with a reduced income. Is that fair to her?

RE: Should I pay off mh

Leave it in!!
When you take the money out, you will be taxed on it. The withholding is 10 percent. If you are under age 59 1/2 there is also a 10 percent penalty (unless it is a ROTH).
Having savings there when you retire is a very good thing, If you can, avoid depleting those savings. Consider budgeting additional money to put against prinicpal and pay down that debt.

RE: Taxes and fulltiming

If H&R Block cannot handle your taxes, GO TO SOMEONE ELSE! I had to file in multiple states one year and it was fairly easy - I did the taxes myself. I find it hard to believe that H&R Block cannot handle this situation - maybe the person you are dealing with is an idiot. Talk to their superior or call the hotline and ask them if they really can handle it.
Or try Turbo Tax. You can do Turbo Tax online, and only pay when you are finished and ready to file. That way you'd know they handle the situation correctly before you pay.

RE: Interesting spin of RV buying

We went to the Birmingham RV show last weekend and I was disappointed. There were only a few mainly lower end class A's that were displayed. Tiffin was not there!!! There were just a handful of "accessory" vendors, mainly videos, rv clubs, campgrounds, and a waterless cooking set demo.
They mainly had pop-ups, tear-drops, TT and 5th wheels in the low to medium price range $8000-180000. Quite a few had a "SOLD" sticker on them.
