RE: Let's see, do I want to take my motorhome here?

Just a note the buses that drive the tunnels are 96" wide, just ordinary older buses, there is nothing special about them except the mirro positions, they were used for school trips in the winter. Ours were mainly MCI 96A,s TMIs also although there wasn't much difference that I remember other than the gages said TMI and the steering wheel center cover said TMI insetasd of MCI. I don't think a 102 would go, we did take the older 102" on Iron Mtn road though. I think the newer ones might be too tall, I never drove them much I was lucky enuff to keep my regular (same one) bus at home till they fixed the street and didn't put a driveway in my yard so i had to park it about half a mile away. I am getting boring probably here but i remember one time going down hill thru the tunnels on iron MTN Rd I was a step on guide that day and at the middle tunnel i told the guy to swing way wide or he would scrap the rain gutter and leave a black paint mark there. Well he said I got it, i got it handled only to find out he didn't have it handled I suppose the black paint has been scratched off by now though! Sorry to be so windy I try to keep them short.

RE: Let's see, do I want to take my motorhome here?

I used to drive the tunnels regularly for several years. the mirrors were pulled in (adjusted to be close to the bus) and remained that way year round but we never pulled them in like you can on P/U,s. Depending on which way you go through the tunnel you need the mirror at the end so you don't clip your rear left clearance lite. Once in a while i got in crooked and had to back up a fewe inches and told the people i did that just for the guy following me. I did have a guy follow me around to the photo stop and ask if i was trying to back out! normally we came in the way stagecoach west came out. It is close and there are no guide points per se, it was different every time. I went 3 years and never touched the rock then about 2-3 years ago i scratched the edge of my mirror because some one asked me a question and instead of stopping i kept going and broke concentration the scratch ruined my day.
just a note the bus in the video came out the wide end of the tunnel. There were always people at the end pointing this way or that telling you which way to go. A lot of times when i was safely out i would hold up both hands for the picture takers, they laughed at that, it was fun when you were thru! Would I like to take my Class A thru? not really.

Kill-a-Watt meter

I have looked Kill-a-watt meters and see that you plug appliances into them and see what amps etc they use. That is a good thing, but what do you actually "DO" with it after you have checked everything you can plug into it? do you just plug it into an outlet and let it sit there in an outlet like the volt meters I have seen pictured on this site. You can't really plug the thing into the pedestal and monitor the entire RV useage. I would need to pull the MW out to check it. Maybe i am dense please humor me and explain what else is it good/used for.
Normally I use my DVM before plugging into an outlet at a RV park and i plan to make one of those testers i have seen on this site.
An aside: After I got this RV i plugged the thing with the lights on it that show reversed leads, mine showed a hot-neutral reversed situation, i fretted abot that and checked my extension cord, that ok so i looked at the J-bos where the main cord is wwired into the RV and sure enuff the white and black were reversed! Unplugged the cord aand reversed the leads and all is well. It surprized me that in all these years it was not noticed.

RE: Another check to do when buying used

I must be behind the times, if you don't use wire nuts how do you connect 2 or 3 10 gage or more wires together? Solder could melt and split wire bolts need taping and securing so they don't rub and wear the insulation thru.

RE: 20 amp thru wall

My RV has 2nd AC that runs off the gen so I installed one of those Amazon male plugs on the out side and ran that wire to one side of a 110 VAC on-off-0n switch and the gen lead to the other side and the output of the seitch to the 20 amo CB that was already installed for 2nd AC. with the switch i can control the input to the AC. I then installed an outlet in the bedroom for a heater. this way the heater can run off the new wiring, i am thinking about running the outlet thru the 20 amp CB. I don't see any harm in that as there is little chance that i would ever run a heater and AC at the same time and over load the circuit. i didn't get to try it out this year.

What are the dimensions of it? Looks like 3/4" wood.
"snail snot on ice" and here I always thought, "snot on a pump handle" was the slickest substance!

RE: Gas fill up on static RV

just out ok curiosity why did RV fail inspection?
Why can't you wait to fill tanks till RV is repaired and can be driven to the station. Things have probably changed since i was at RAF Wethersfield in Essex i the early "60's, our pickups were huge on the roads much less an RV!
I enjoyed being there and would love to go back adn see it again, if i could remember what it looked like back then!

RE: any electricians in the crowd?

After thinking about this I remembered that i have electric heat and when i painted a room it had 240 baseboard, long time back & short memory.
The plug in the garage has 4 holes in it so it is 240 type am i will try and find out what number it is.
Before we get a 240 welder we'd have it checked out first. Probably start out with a 120 wire fed.
Thanks again.

RE: any electricians in the crowd?

I thought I understood this 50 amp deal. so if a house has 50 amp service, and one wants to have 50 amp outlet for RV, one has to know which wire coming into the house is from the incoming L1/L2 and run wire from each L1/L2 leg of service wire to the new outlet.
I thought for a 50 amp you only needed a seperate wire for the L1/L2 legs on the RV outlet. If a house only has 3 wires coming into it then one could not have a true 50 amp RV outlet because all house wires would be the same phase. Yes/no?
i am not sure whether I have 3 or 4 wires coming into my house.
I mainly asked the above question to help me understand because my son who has the house next to me has a 50 amp outlet and when i tested it it didn't test like i thought it should it turns out the PO had a welder at the outlet so we popped the CB till we get a welder.

RE: Best way to keep Mice out of the coach?

So PO used poison, While working on RV i found 3 who, "drank the coolaid". The poison was in the back where the power cord comes in so I stuffed steel wool into the cord hatch. Then i saw rusting of the steel wool, so i got a stainless steel scrub pad amd slipped it over the plug and shoved the pad into the cord hatch while the cord is plugged in. Later on I got a pack of copper scrub pads as back up.

RE: soo many questions from new rv'er

Might not hurt to look at the power plug the big cord that plugs into the outside pedestal and make sure the pins are clean, if not clean, poliish with emery paper or change the plug if the rubber looks cracked like it has over heated. I think cleaning battery termainal and grounds were mentioned. I have found, not often, that some iindividual terminal screws have loosened or got kind of coated with corosion so that the copper is dingy, so with power off check tighten the individual terminal as gremlins loosen them when you are asleep.

RE: Old Class A Problem

Daveinet - I knew that an elect pump would be way to easy!
Isoppose that the fuel return line is on the mechanical pump because the filter in place now has no other lines from it, just in and out.
Nowermech - thanks for the 350 pump tip! my son inherited the Itasca so i'll pass that tip on to him

If you have room to mount 2 switches, why not mount the DPDT (reversing) switch then next in line mount the speed control switch?

RE: Furnace and water heater by-pass

Thanks - I puled the cover off the thermosat and it was open (contacts apart). I have to admit that cleaning passed over me like an F16. I''ll try and find a way into the gizzards of the furnace, it is stuck next to and under cabinets etc. One of the ducts under the dinette seaat as some duct tape on it so i guess i should replace that one.
About the Tee i am afraid it will shear off, i want to put a shutoff into the WH so i can winertize easier.
i knew that a miffen fan was probably not the answer, but i got a box of them at a yard sale for a buck and nothing to do with them yet! I thought abouot puttinig one on top of the converter but it id unnder the night stand in the bedroon and no way for hot air to getout froom under it unless i put a heater vent to the bedroom. Then i thought it has been going since new and still works so maybe it doesn't need more ventilation. it is a triad.
I'll try the extension and cheater pipe, when i get brave!
Thanks so much i will post about the adventures.

Furnace and water heater by-pass

Morning
1. 83 GB, suberban Dynatrail, NT-730s furnace, lights up fine, shuts off by thermosat but after it is off for a few minutes the fan starts and gets up to speed (a few seconds i think) then shuts (fan stops). I think it is blowing to cool down but is that long enough to cool anything down.
2. I was wonder about installing a 2 1/2" or 3" miffin fan at the bedroom vent to help draw more air into the bedroom.
Any thooughts about that?
3. my WH is a mor-Flo American DSI, works fine. at the hot water outlet there is a gray plastic Tee for sink and the rest of the RV. I want to take the tee out and install a shut off valve so i can winterize it easier. the fitting has probably been in there since the ark landed, how how torque will they withstand before breaking?
Since I am at it i have tried to take the anode rod out, because of the locatin i can't get a straight shot at it but one tech told me they use an air wrench on them. I would hate to shake the WH so much that it broke something else. what does any one else think?

RE: Old Class A Problem

OK. if I installed an electric pump and had a mechanical pump failure (short of a leaking diaphram) would the electric pump be able to push enough fuel thru the mechanical pump to supply the carb to operate the engine?
I had to change a pump on a 76 Itasca class C with a 350 in the Wal-Mart parking lot at Ft Collins, CO, I had to go back to the store to get some grease to hold the push rop up while installing the pump. It was rather nerve wracking at 500PM on a Saturday evening. it started up and is still fine.
1. i 83 GB with a 454, i can't imagine how hard it would be to change a pump on the 454! I fimally found the fuel filter on the frame and since i ought to change it for year so i am thinking or putting a electric pump at the fuel filter and carry enough supplies to by-pass the mechanial pump in case the engine pump fails. What would be the failing points of installing the pump at the filter?
