RE: Sealing a leaky seam on my epdm roof.... what should I use?

Don't see it in this thread, but elsewhere I have read NOT to use silicone. I also use it for everything under the sun, but people here say it is not the way to go. I have used the Dicor self-leveling sealant in a tube (like caulking gun) and it does a great job, but not too pretty. But then its on the top, so you're the only one who sees it!

RE: Running generator on Natural Gas

I believe the reference to an orifice is for a heater or stove or some such appliance. The problem, I think you are having is that natural gas is a lower pressure than propane. I don't know about the load block that others have written about. This must have to do with the multi-fuel capacity. I'm curious a to what kind of container you have for natural gas?

RE: How much do you need?

Actually, I think the "don't get too much" advise has a lot of merit. I printed off about a dozen lists of "stuff you have to have", and hardly looked at the list after that. We got a lot of stuff, but I think, one should try as best you can to remove stuff you don't use in about two or three weekend trips. Of course things like an extra water hose or pressure regulator, you can easily carry for the twice a year you need them, but we have found that a lot of kitchen stuff just gets moved in, in spring and out in fall without ever being touched in between. Just sayin' it all adds up to weight. hth

RE: Slide out motor replacement

I just had to replace the dinning room slide motor on my Jayco last week. I used waltsrvsurplus@aol.com Sent them pics by phone and some numbers. the numbers were not sufficient, but the pics and a couple measurements got me a surplus motor at about 1/6th of a new one. I installed, using normal hand tools (and several times slithering under and out from under the RV) in about two hours, having never done it before. The only time I had to improvise, was the new motor was larger in diameter than the old one, which meant I had to find a shorter bolt and smaller nut with no washer, to allow passage. I drilled a hole in the nut and added a wire (like aircraft safety wire) through the nut as a lock. If you're handy, you can do it. hth, david

RE: Kill the Suds

As a 30+yr appliance tech, I hate what fabric softener does to the inside of washers pumps, hoses, etc. I have needed to reduce suds in a dishwasher when someone had used regular detergent, and the answer was salt. I personally would not add fabric softener to my grey tank, but I do use a "water softener" in my black tank. Toss about a half cup of table salt into the kitchen sink and same in the shower before dumping and see if this helps. Just an idea. david

RE: Water Heater Blowing Fuses

I would say it doesn't matter whether 12 or 120 volts. The element is possibly shorted to ground or through the water to ground. With electricity off (all of it, 12 and 120) take at least one wire off the element at the water heater and test for continuity from the element screw to the other one, then to the side of the tank. If there is a beep from one side of the element to the other, the element is good. If the beep is from one side to ground (the tank) it is shorted and this will pop a breaker. A partially open element where electric current is exposed to water will also sometimes cause a fuse or breaker to blow. hth

DIY slide motor change

Anyone done their own slide motor change who is not an RV tech? I have, what I believe to be a 3X3 geared 12 VDC motor that runs my dining room slide out that I have been told is bad. I'm too cheap to pay full price, so I'm looking for other motor sources, but I also don't want to pay their hourly price to do the repair. I have made my living for over 30 yrs repairing appliances and this doesn't look as hard as lots of what I do every day. If anyone has experience I would appreciate a reply. I can also get pix, since I have to get back under there to find numbers off the motor. Just checking. Thanks for your help, as usual. david

RE: How old?

"How old" is very individual. Each situation has so many variables. At 65 seeing a 94 y/o driving scares me to death, for what he/she may do to others or themselves. But then when I get closer to 90's myself, I may feel differently. Just so many subtle changes we don't even notice as they happen. I have been driving for 50+ yrs if you count the farm stuff, and it all seems to be instinctive. Then I go to a new city and have to find my way "on the fly" and find I have to get closer to the signs to make sense of them. My eyesight is fine (w/glasses), but reaction time is what I'm getting at. I think I'm fine, until I have to do something different than everyday and find I'm not quite as quick as I thought I was. I want to RV long enough that the DW (64) is willing to sell the house and go full time, but she's about 20 yrs away from that, it seems

RE: TV (Television)

I have not replaced the bedroom TV with a digital one. Could this be the reason? Thanks for the help. david But due to your asking the question you ask, I'd guess such a set up is beyond you. There is no limit to what is "beyond" me! lol But I do understand the comment. Although I repair appliances for a living (32 yrs) there are some aspects of "technology" that escape me, I guess. The 2d TV has not been much of a priority, so far, but as retirement travel moves closer each day, I want to be able to make stuff as convenient as possible. I have a small digital tv in the stick & brick I will try and see how that goes. Thanks for all the comments. david

RE: TV (Television)

From your wording, I assume the bedroom tv can display the same channel as the living area tv, Does the second tv have an attached digital to analog converter box? If no, then what is doing the conversion? If yes, are you using the converter box to change the channels (instead of the tv, itself?) Tom Yes TV's used to display the same programming, network TV or DVD. I have no converter box. The new TV is hooked up to a Blu-ray 5.1 system via HDMI cable. If I replace the bedroom TV with a digital, will I have separate viewing capabilities? thanks, david

TV (Television)

I have a main Tele in my living area and another in the bedroom. I have replaced the CRT TV at 70# with a flatscreen at less than 20. The bedroom TV is also hooked up to the rig's air antenna. There is a splitter from the antenna and separate lines to each of the TV's. Why can I not receive two separate programs at the same time. I have not replaced the bedroom TV with a digital one. Could this be the reason? Thanks for the help. david

RE: Carrying firearms in RV

The gun debate is raging right now and I have my opinion about it, but my thoughts on this thread from the OP is, you can carry if you feel you need it, but as Masaad Ayoob (sp?) teaches, you really have to be thoughtful about when to draw and use your self defense of choice. In this political climate, I would wonder about the advisability of using even something like pepper spray! Some folks are so touchy about this subject that tempers flare when reason should prevail. I will probably carry some means of protecting myself and my loved ones, but not have any visible means of the bad guy knowing. Also, I always thought, don't be places where there is a high expectation of evil lurking, if you can help it. Of course, there is more evil to lurk now than in some times past, but try to plan and don't set yourself up as a victim. Be Safe!

RE: tow/haul

By way of explanation, I'm not really so stupid as to not know when to push the button, when towing or not towing. No offense taken. I guess I just wanted to know if the high revs produced from having it on would damage engine or tranny?

RE: need your opinions: rv or hotel?

booshmom, we are also central Indiana folks for are about to begin traveling more. I am 65, wife 64. We bought a fifth wheel and dually ford for TV. Got a good buy from some friends, and are convinced from research alone that the best way for us is the RV route. Car rental with flying eats up budget pretty fast. Seems to us you have way more choices (admittedly, one time) on floorplan and style of RV, than you do with hotel rooms. Additionally, we felt, some of the most desirable spots to see and camp are really far from any accommodations you don't bring yourself. Cooking or not is up to you except when off the track, but traveling back roads lets you see so much without worry about what kind of bed you'll get, or what kind of bugs you'll encounter. Obviously your choice, but RVing is the choice for us. hth and Happy Trails, whatever the means!

RE: tow/haul

Thanks, Friends! Guess the collective answer is tow/haul on. Glad to benefit from other's experience. Happy Trails!

tow/haul

What is the prevailing wisdom of using the tow/haul feature of the tow vehicle. Mine is an '06 6.0 dually in signature. I get virtually no engine brake without it, but I get some pretty high revs, when braking in hilly country. Trailer brakes seem to work well and are set up correctly, but I do like the feel of the engine braking with the feature turned on. What are your thoughts, oh massive driving public?

RE: Merging onto an Interstate

The thing that really irks me on freeway on-ramps is "WEAVE" signs. Engineers that design on-ramps that require those signs should be shot. You end up with vehicles that are attempting to accelerate to highway speeds trying to merge with vehicles trying to deceletate to 25 mph ramp speeds. Merging accelerating vehicles with decelerating vehicles defies the laws of physics. Yep, I agree 100%. You don't see them all over, probably because they are so dangerous. You are right, what were they thinking? Another, slightly off-topic area of concern that they are rapidly expanding here in central Indiana is the traffic circle (or as the Brits say, "round-about). I an unnerved in an auto, and I would hate to have to maneuver my 57' RV/TV around one without killing anyone!

RE: Merging onto an Interstate

To me, the meaning of "punch it" is more about being decisive. Your focus is on the second or third vehicle is front, and those right near you are actually in the periphery. Match with the traffic pattern you see in your mirrors and by looking back and when you decide, go for it. If you have signaled and planned well, no one will have to make any emergency adjustments.

RE: Where to hide them

I think this whole topic is over-thought! I love my dear wife way too much to hide anything from her! She is the light of my life and the reason for my living! (Now, can I have some chocolate, please, honey!);)
