RE: Confused

It sounds like fulltiming would be a recipy for disaster. Start with trips to places that offer something for both of you. My DH likes nothing better than to be in some remote mountain area with no cell phone service or TV or people. Not me, give me a nice campground near someplace like Charleston SC with tons of history, shopping, restaurants and sights. So, we do a little of both. I can tolerate a few days of remoteness if I have a good book. He has found out he enjoys history more than he thought he would. Start small and see how it goes.

RE: Renting RV/Yosemite questions

An RV is the way to go. We were at Yosemite this Oct. and stayed in the housekeeping tents at Curry Village...don't do that! We had noisy neighbors and quite a hike to the bathrooms. The Lodge at Yosemite seemed OK...but the lobby had a strong odor of cleaning chemicals which was bothersome. The Ahwahnee was really nice but was prohibatively expensive. ($495/nt) As far as Yosemite goes, it was gorgeous. I would recommend going at a time when you know the waterfalls will be flowing. We'd love to go back, but will definitely do it with our RV. The campgrounds are beautiful. I hear they're hard to get into though and that you have to reserve at the moment they open reservations for that month.

RE: Charleston SC

We spent last Christmas in Charleston... I second Jestine's Kitchen for good southern cooking. The light show at James Island Co. Park is a drive through, and awesome. We enjoyed the carriage ride. We picked up a coupon at the visitor center on I95. Loved the house tour of Nathaniel Russell House. REALLY loved Middleton Plantation. We took the Slave tour and it was the best. We learned so much about slave life.

RE: Nervous wife

We've taken several long trips, but had a tire blow out 45 minutes from home. After changing a tire on the PA turnpike in Philadelphia at rush hour, we got 4 new tires and now carry 2 spares. I'd love to have a tire pressure monitoring system :) We also don't drive over 60 mph.

Here's someone who did the trip towing a trailer. http://www.sunlineclub.com/docs/ExploringSunlite.pdf

RE: Camping with kids - buying a new TT - bunks or not?

Loved the bunks when we had kids. Several reasons I like the specific floorplan you chose. Bunks in the front of the V is an efficient use of space. I also like that the bathroom isn't right by the bunks because if you get up early or during the night and need the facilities you won't be disturbing the kids. Love the eating bar, and the U dinette.

RE: Options advice for new TT

Minimal carpet should be changed to no carpet. The only good thing about carpet in a camper is if you're cold weather camping it gives a little warmth to the floor...but throw rugs can do that. When we had kids at home we ordered our units with no carpet...wish the current one had none.

RE: Horseback Riding/Campground

Pipestem Resort State Park in WV has horseback riding right in the park with guided rides and miles of trails. http://www.pipestemresort.com/recreation.html

RE: Best camp grounds in Yosemite for 31 Foot TT?

RE: Ultralight with Murphy Bed?

The Funfinder 16FS has the murphy bed in a tiny little overall package. From experience I can tell you that making the bed every night gets old pretty fast. I wonder if Cruiser will make the Viewfinder below with a sofa instead of the dinette. That would be very cool. We were impressed with the construction and decor of this little unit. http://www.cruiserrv.com/viewfinder/floorplans.html

RE: Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge PKWY with a Fifth Wheel

There were lots of big rigs at Big Meadows on Skyline Drive when we were there. Sites are huge and the larger ones are pretty level. Not sure, but I don't think you're going to fit through Mary's Rock Tunnel which is north of Big Meadows on Skyline Drive. (Looks like a 12'8" clearance)

RE: trade her in

We traded our last 2 trailers. When we find one we are interested in buying, DH and I sit down at home and decide how much cash we want to pay in addition to our trade. Then we go to our salesman and see what he can do for us. (without revealing the price we agreed on at home) Last time we paid $1 less than we had agreed we wanted to pay :)

Keeping your RV exterior clean

We just scrubbed the roof and treated it with a rubber preservative. We did this in our driveway with a hose. We're wondering how you fulltimers handle this chore since most campgrounds have a "no RV washing" policy.

RE: Pa. to Fort Wilderness w/two overnight stays. Where to stay?

Claytor Lake State Park in Dublin, VA would make a nice first stop. It's only 3 easy miles off of I81, has a nice lake with boat rentals and beach swimming.

RE: What is your limit for a pop-up

You don't mention if you have any pets. One of the big reasons we traded to a hardside TT was that we weren't comfortable leaving our dog in the PUP, even for a half hour to run an errand. Some of the other reasons we switched were fridge size, being able to stop and use the TT for lunch or a rest, noise from other campers, ease of loading and unloading, having a real bathroom and holding tanks. Setup and takedown weren't that big of a deal for us. It was part of the adventure. We have friends who bought a HiLo last year and it seems like a great compromise.

RE: I-76 PA or I-78 PA

if you have to go near the intersection of 61 and 78 that's backed up on a regular basis. I'd avoid that area.

RE: Cell Phone Service in Yosemite ?

We were there 1 week ago and were able to receive calls and txt messages on our very old Verizon phone. I could also send txt messages. But for some reason couldn't call out. When I wanted to talk to one of the kids I just sent them a txt and they'd call me. Worked great at Curry Village and around the Visitor Center area. Didn't try it anywhere else.

RE: Looking for Blue Ridge Parkway Info

Mountain Stream RV Park in Marion, NC is really nice. Sites are a little small but it's a picture postcard campground and convenient to many of the BRP attractions. Loved the owners. Sherando is great. With no reservation don't count on getting a site on a friday or saturday night during the summer. Show up mid week and you're fine because with your small trailer you can fit in many of their tent section sites - We did that one year when we had our 17' trailer and that section is beautiful. Of course there're the National Park Campgrounds - Lewis Mtn., Loft Mtn, Big Meadows.

RE: Skyline Drive

There is definitely gas available at the Big Meadows area. The restaurant hours don't seem to be on their website, but here's the phone number. 888-896-3833 I know we didn't finish eating until around 8:00 and it was still full.
