RE: A few questions before I sign for my 1st 5er......

Welcome to the site... Nice truck... Can't say much about the length since I have a short one, but the campgrounds I've been to out west here have been small and sometimes a challenge to get my 5er into. Short sites and long trailers? I would check around for the maximum length that some of the parks around allow. In the end it is up to you and if you and DW feel you have a good deal that's what counts most.

RE: Ford trailer brake controller

I have mine at 6, but like Jack said you will not notice any tug it is very well integrated and even in hard braking the anti-lock is incorporated with the trailer brakes. Only time I noticed any big difference is when one trailer brake got a little crazy and locked up on some sand otherwise it is very hard to see any difference, the whole rig stops better when towing than without it seems due to the extra braking from the trailer.

RE: Diesel Issue

When I had a no start issue with mine the technician said it was due to low engine oil and a dead battery. Well the real reason when I talked to him was the alarm had been activated and cutoff the start circuit, of course he had bypassed the alarm and didn't test that issue. Anyway I learned from reading that the fuel injectors use engine oil for hydraulics and low oil can cause hard start. Could be possible with oil that cold the injectors are having trouble with pressure so I would check the oil level and glow plugs.

RE: Extended Warranty on Tow Vehicle

I agree with if you must have one purchase from Ford. But my experience I have purchased them in the past and never used it. Routine maintenance done myself I haven't had the need for the extended warranty. For my current F250 I skipped the expense, why? The engine has 100,000 mile 6 years factory warranty. Others I know that purchased extended warranty it turns out to be insurance, you pay a deductible and they cover the rest. Just be sure you get pre-authorization!!! Friend broke down and found it was alternator, but did not get pre-authorization to replace alternator and therefor it was NOT covered.

RE: F250 rotor question

My F250 isn't ready for rotor's yet, but I have changed them on my F150. The factory rotors took 1 turning fine, the second they warped. I went to Napa and had a choice for OEM equivalent between Japan or USA steel. I chose USA steel for a few extra $'s. As samsontdog found out cleaning the caliper pins is a must. I haven't seen or used the cryo rotors but I did not go for the drilled and slotted for many extra $$ as my trucks are not used for racing and believe the extra material will afford better braking. Remember some 75% or more braking comes from those front rotors and they are performing a very tough job under very tough circumstances. There are many articles for pro's and con's of drilled/slotted rotors and IMHO they are great for sports cars but I don't think they are a good choice to be stopping my TV with many extra pounds behind it and the difference in stopping safely. This clicky explains it even better.

RE: Awning

I had a similar situation. I too looked at the situation and scratched my head. Then I thought well it's under warranty why not let the dealer take care of it. Called and made appointment then took it in and let their guys take care of it that way it should be covered if any other problem arise. Documented the issue and the repair for future reference. Checked the work and it is very secure now, but then again only time will tell. You paid good money for the RV I would let their guys fix it first while under warranty and then ask how they fixed it and use that knowledge for future.

RE: Breakaway switch hook up

I like the eyebolt and snap link cable idea, I got mine too tight for turns once and then had to go back to the cab to get the key out of the ignition to release the cable from the lock once. Sharp turns and short cable backing up makes for a surprise when going forward again.

RE: Reese Hitch

I don't have the jaws type reese but the bar slide. A couple times I had problems similar to what you describe. Then I started making sure that the trailer was around 1/2" lower than the catch plate before I backed up ensuring I wasn't high hitching it. No problems since. Just an idea....

I hope she was able to get her trailer moved?

RE: suspension

I also agree with checking it out if it was level and now it isn't. I also would say the air lift bags are a good way to get the extra lift use them on my f150 for towing the boat. My F250 wasn't sagging but boy the chucking and bumps were getting to me, I changed the shocks with Rancho's and what a difference. The air bags are easy enough to put on if you can turn a wrench, no sense paying someone a bunch of $$ for something you can do yourself in a couple hours at most.

RE: Ford F250 question

If the new trucks are the same as the older trucks (like mine) better pay attention to the sticker on the door. There were 2 types of 250s. one had the extra leaf in the back (making it the same as a 350) and one did not. so just because you are driving a f350 does not mean you are able to pull more then a 250 (legally)... now when you go to a DRW that all changes. I am only talking about the SRW in the front leaf spring world. I have to agree watch the door sticker. On my truck they called it the camper special and it has the helper leaf. Although my trailer is on the light side this is the truck I use to move heavy loads. A load of Cement, bricks or rocks will load it up to use the extra spring. Sometimes the price difference can be large. I got my 06 when the 08's were on the lot. There was no negotiating the 08's but there was lots of room to negotiate the 06. There was a large selection that grew everyday of the 08's but the selection was getting smaller on the 06's. I guess I got lucky to find the truck I wanted in the 06's and got one heck of a good deal. But you need to shop around and buy what works for YOU...

RE: Is 4wd important when full-timing with a 5er

I had this worry after having problems getting the boat up a wet ramp with my F150. Couldn't afford a new truck but the problem was only 1 wheel was slipping. Spent a some $$$$ and changed the open differential to a locking differential, wow what a change. Even had to help a 4x4 out of a snow bank two years ago. Looking for a nice differential for this big axle on the F250 as it is less expensive to purchase and maintain than the 4x4 that just give 2 power wheels anyway, 1 front 1 rear unless the differential is locking. Too much power not enough traction is a bad combo for 2x4 or 4x4. JMHO

RE: New to Fivers & Need Light Weight Rig Advice

Not to start a 1/2 can pull anything war but my springdale is considered light enough to be towed by a 150/1500 truck not that I would. With a gross weight of 8200. It has a floor plan we like and I often have to remind myself it is back there. We enjoy it and it works for us.

RE: Which wheels? I can't decide

Both are sharp and I would be having the same problem until I was down there cleaning #2 then I'd be wishing I had gone with my original choice #1. I say #1.

RE: Senior Members !!!!

Sorry to hear about the Layoff. I have to agree that parking a large truck can be a bit of a pain. I also have an f150 for daily driving but I enjoy driving the F250 more must be that smoke. If you are taking a poll my suggestion is get you a 5er and sell the MH and toad. Insurace costs will probably be less and like said before the maintenance costs should go down since only 1 vehicle to maintain. Besides if DW likes the truck my bet is it will be much harder to get rid of the Truck. lol

RE: Camping at the Indy 500! Whoo Hoo!

I haven't been at Indy nor have I been at the Pamona speedway here, but I have talked to people that have gone to Pamona and heard that the camping police are mostly looking for out of control people and one should be prepared for a festive environment. Only wish I could convice the DW to try it just once.

RE: fifth wheel manuverability

Your situation sounds very close to some of the campgrounds I've been to. I would much prefer putting this fiver in a tight spot that a TT. I think I've amazed myself some of the tight spots I got my 5er into. Practice goes a long ways and don't forget to practice your helper. That way you both get used to how the trailer handles and how the two of you need to communiate to get the job done.
