Summer trip finalized

I am thrilled to say our #1 bucket list trip for the summer is set. Starting an eight week trip West July 22 from Chicago. We are avid day hikers and I love landscape photography. First stop is Medicine Bow Mts, WY. Then Sawtooth Mts, Mt Rainer, Mt St Helens, Oregon coast, Crater Lake, Redwood, Yosemite, and finally Sequoia. I have no idea how we are getting home. Hopefully we have inserted enough rest/laundry days. Only reservation disappointment was not getting first pick in Yosemite. I sleep better having reservations when camping at the big national parks during busy season. All I have to be able to do now is backup the 5W. Your suggestions are appreciated.

RE: Do I need battery power to hitch up?

Thanks for the input. Here is what happened when I picked up the trailer this morning. First, I wanted to see what would happen with just the truck connected to the trailer. I backed up the truck and connected the tow electric cord" to the truck. I installed the batteries and turned the battery kill switch off so the batteries did not work. I seriously doubt if I could get the jacks up. They barely wanted to move. Next I turned the kill switch to on. With the fresh charged batteries working the jacks came up like I expected.
For me I will have charged batteries when hitching. I did not try the generator. It was 22 degrees and 20 MPH wind. Thanks

Do I need battery power to hitch up?

It is going to be 20 degrees tomorrow when I take the 5W out of cold storage. Do I have to installed my two fully charged batteries in the cold and wind or can I plug into the truck to raise the jacks?
thanks.

How to charge batteries?

Which is the better way to charge my two group 24 batteries with a Honda 2000 generator? Plug the shore line into the generator and power the trailer and the batteries or charge the batteries directly from the generator with the Honda DC adapter? We will be drydocking for seven days. 35 at night and 50 during the day. Hope to set thermostat at 60 at night and run the furnace for one hour in the morning. Then recharge the batteries starting late afternoon. Thanks.

Run furnace at night while drydocked?

I have two 24 batteries on my 5W and a Honda 2000. While drydocking do I have the battery power to run the furnace at night and recharge the batteries the next day? Probably set the thermostate at 62 during the night and then warm the trailer up in the morning. I expect 35-45 degrees at night. I do not know how long the furnace would run during the night. Thanks.

Electric blanket on 12dc?

My 5W has a 12vdc outlet behind the TV. I was wondering if I can use an inverter and be able to plug in an electric blanket when we are drydocking. I have a Honda 2000 to recharge the two batteries the next day.
We will be camping at 8000' in late July in Medicine Bow Mts (Snowy Mt Pass) outside of Laramie, WY. Thanks for the input and suggestions.

Which honda generator to buy?

What is the difference between the 2000i regular and the 2000i companion? For battery charging while drydocking does it matter? The generator would also be used at home during power outtages.
Thanks.

RE: Prime Time Crusader

I bought the Crusader 260rld in April 2012; plus a Ford 250 diesel. I love both. New trailer allowed us to stay at Gulf SP Alabama for two months in comfort. Zero problems. Everything works great. As usual a couple of adjustments such as bypass valve wrong. Very nice components and workmanship. Good luck with you decision.

Leveling a trailer

I have a two axel fifth wheel. If I need to raise the trailer on the driver side, should I place blocks under both driver side tires or is it safe to raise just one tire? Thanks

Care and feeding of a generator?

I am considering getting a Honda 2000i to keep the batteries charged during drydocking. We want to do more BLM and national/state forest camping. I do not expect to run the AC or furnace. I have two batteries in the fifth wheel.
Where do you store the generator and gasoline when traveling and at the campsite? Do you connect the trailer's 30 amp cord to the generator? How many hours do you run your generator? How do you make the generator quieter? How do you keep it secure? What other issues should I consider? Do you know of a link that explains generators? Thanks

Will 30' 5W fit inn Yosemite NP

I just read on rec.gov that Yosemite's Lower and North Pines campgrounds limits 5W to 24' due to manuverablity. Is this true? If so, where do you sugggest I camp for five days.
Apparently Sequoia does not have is limitation. Dorst campground has ten sites that offer long pullthrus.
thanks.

Best road into Mt Rainer?

This summer we will take our 2011 Ford 250 diesel/30' fifth wheel from Chicago to Mt Rainer and then head south to Deathe Valley. Expect trip to take 8 weeks. We will be on I-80 - I-84 - I-82 as we approach Rainier from the southeast. My question is: At Yakima, can we safely take #12, enter the park on the east side, and drive to Ashford near the west entrance?
Or should I take #12 to #7 and enter the park from the west?
Thanks

RE: Weathered the storm

Gulf Shoress, AL missed Mobile's two tornados; just wind and rain for us. This was our first high wind experience. To prepare our 30' FW I did the following. Any other suggestions for the future will be appreciated
1. Closed slides
2. F1lled fresh water tank
3. Attached two corkscrew tie downs to the rear bumper.
I was considering hooking up the truck with the jacks and stabilizers down, but since no one else did I changed my mind. Is that a good idea? TRhanks

I want to hang a 30" long coat rack next to the rear doord in our 5W. The wall looks 2" thick between the inside panel and the outside shell.
Before I drill a hole in the wall I need to knoow the best way to anchor the rack. I plan to install five hooks to hold light weighst rain jackets and windbreakers. No heavy parkas. Thanks for the help.

RE: Campgrounds Around Mobile, AL

No one has mentioned Gulf State Park. Next to Gulf Shores. We have reservations for Oct and Nov. 18 mile paved bicycle trail and 5 miles of beach to walk convinced us to give it a try. We were there in April for a couple of days and look forward to returning. Definitely call for reservations. Your can also get a post office box in Gulf Shores for $20 if you want mail sent to you.

Can 30' FW get into NW parks?

Summer 2013 we will undertake #1 trip on our bucket list: seven weeks to the Northwest. Hope to stay at Jedediah Smith SP in Redwoods NP, North pines and Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite NP, and Lodgepole in Sequoia NP. Will I be able to pull my 30' fifth wheel to these campgrounds? Or are the roads too tight?
I will call the ranger stations in a couple weeks for information but would appreciate your input. Thanks.

Hot water heater not hot enough?

In seven years I have owned two RVs. Today I learned something new.
Our new hot water heater put out 98 degree water. That is luke warm. I called the manufacture and the customer service man said it sounded like the hot water heater by-pass value was open allowing cold water to mix with the hot water. Sure enough he was right.
I now have 130 degree water. Cost to fix the problem? $00.
Hope this helps the next guy with luke warm water.
