RE: House under contract...

I know where you are coming from. We had put down the bahama shutters for hurricane season (South West Florida on the water)and said if the house sells, it sells. If it doesn't, it doesn't. We took off in our new 37' gasser Winnebago and got as far as North Carolina when our realtor called and said he had a contract on our home. We put the motorhome in storage and drove the Jeep back to Florida. The wife was a school teacher and school was starting in two weeks. She needed to be in by then. We called the kids to come down with U-Haul its. We gave our daughter what we wanted her to have, our son to take what he wanted and then our son-in-law and daughter-in-law. Our granddaughter wanted my bedroom suite. After that we invited our neighbors in. Being a house on the water I had a lot of nautical stuff that our neighbors wanted. It broke my heart to see my husband give away his beloved tools, fishing stuff and BOAT! What stuff we kept we put in a storage shed and said ONE YEAR! Long story short - at the end of the one year we took everything to Hospice. Paid rent on the shed for a year and then kept nothing. We traded in the 2011 Winnebago on a 2012 Phaeton diesel and I guess, "Lived happily ever after". I miss my home and my "stuff" but I also love our motothome. My husband says he misses nothing and is so glad he doesn't have the upkeep of a two story house, 26' boat, motorhome and Jeep. Wish you well. It is a whole different ballgame and it has its pros and cons.

RE: Winter Quarters Pasco

We stay here every year December 1st through May 1st. Not because we want to, but because it is the only RV park near our kids. The only other park is a nudist park. No way! I pass a mirror with my hands over my eyes. It ain't purty!! Winter Quarters Pasco (Lutz, FL) is about a 5 out of 10 but we are here for our kids - not the "Resort". Our site is the lesser of all evils. It is 50 amp and the interior roads are paved. It is cheaper the longer you stay. About $17 a day for a 5 month stay. Come May we hit the road for any and all points unknown.

RE: About Full-Time Rving

Darius, there is a wonderful web site for us military retirees. It is U.S. Military Campground Directory. It gives you all of the campgrounds/famcamps in the United States. All you need is your Military ID to get in. The directory tells you what hookups they have and the cost. (Usually $12 to $22) Most are very nice and you meet friendly people. A great way to start.

RE: Question for 2012 Phaeton owners only

Okay, you guys. Sorry if I stated this incorrectly. What are your ideas about this problem? I'm wondering if there is an aftermarket product to solve this issue or is it a Cummins, Freightliner screwup? I said 2012 Phaeton only because in the past I've had Gulf Stream, Discovery, and Providence. The 2012 Phaeton Cummins requires DEF in the fuel where others don't. As I said, I'm wondering if this DEF stuff has anything to do with the exhaust system which sucks and is also very dangereous. Sorry about saying 2012 Phaeton if others are also having this problem. I need to get an answer and that is what this forum is all about. If I don't dare get on a road that has 6+% downgrades, I may just as well stay in Florida. Thanks for any help I can get. Again, sorry about requiring only 2012 Phaeton owners.

Question for 2012 Phaeton owners only

Our exhaust brake isn't worth didily on anything over 6%. I-5 in Northern California required a lot of foot brake work as well. Nothing like the thrill of hearing the exhaust brake, feeling the foot brake and smelling the brakes!!! I'm wondering if the DEF has anything to do with the PP exhaust brake. I do know all about starting down a grade slowly and not riding the brakes, etc. Been doing it in other diesel motorhomes but this is the first time I've had this problem. Anyone else having this problem?

RE: Just got back from Death Valley

Wow daireemt, I don't know and now you made me wonder. I checked my receipt and it said $32 9/29 & 9/30 leaving 10/1. I checked my Quicken and it had a DV charge of $32. I thought $16 per night way out there was a great price. Maybe someone goofed - for once in my favor.

RE: Just got back from Death Valley

Actually fuel wasn't as bad as we feared. It was $4.75 a gallon on 9/30 at Furnace Creek. I forget what diesel was - thankfully we went in with a full tank.

RE: Just got back from Death Valley

TOOBOLD, it might be worse come Spring. I had a guy once tell me that if you want to do something, do it yesterday. He was 48, went to bed healthy, got bit by a spider during the night, and woke up paralyzed. Lives in an electric wheelchair. The spider bite happeded somewhere in South America but still the story holds true no matter where you are. Don't wait. Time marches on and doesn't wait on you.

RE: Just got back from Death Valley

Othertonka, at the entrance to the campground was a sign "closed" - that was the end of September. Heard nothing about an opening date.

RE: Just got back from Death Valley

Mockturtle, yes, it was hot when we were there the 29th and 30th of September - but...we are from Florida so it wasn't as hot to us as it would be to you being from Washington. The humidity was only 12 percent and we've had 99 and 9/10 percent many days in Florida. Being so dry 100 degrees felt like about 89. I'd wait to go in November if I were you and you are not that far away.

RE: Just got back from Death Valley

We stayed at Stovepipe Wells the only cg with full hookup. It is a gravel parking lot with 50amp electric, water, and sewer. 14 sites for only $16 per night. Reservations recommended! Across the street is a restaurant, saloon, and great gift shop. Try their chili or their hamburger. Both are great. We had no cell phone (Verizon) or internet (Virgin Mobile)

Okay Johna, next question is what is AZ74 like? On the map it is a little gray line. We are driving a 40' Phaeton with a Jeep Liberty toad. Thanks for any info.

Know anything about the campground at Shoshone, California?

I've checked with RV review and it had very little info. I sent an email to the campground with no reply. We are thinking about staying at the campground and driving our Jeep to Death Valley the first week in October. Any info from anyone who has stayed there will be deeply appreciated. Thank you!
