Private messages

Admin,
A question was asked in the middle of a thread, which was clearly different than the op's original question. Being a legitimate question, even if asked inappropriately, I spent quite a bit of time researching links and writing an answer to the question. I had intended to PM the answer.
Upon sending, I discovered that the recipient had block all but his buddy's pm's. A complete waste of my time.
My suggestion is to take the "Send Private Message" off the menu of those that do not want to receive private messages.
Thanks.

RE: Cape cod campresort

Hi
I started to make suggestions for other campgrounds on the water. I did not see your previous thread, but after looking at Cape Cod Resort's website, I would suggest that you make the short drive to the beach and remain there. It looks great.
Woods Hole Science Aquarium is a very short drive. They will have all the sea creatures you will ever want to see. There are many, many beaches in the Falmouth area that are a very short drive away from.
You are a short ferry trip away from Martha's Vineyard out of Falmouth or Woods Hole. Nantucket is also a ferry's trip away, but I have not done done it in a lot of years. You may be better off leaving from Hyannis.
You are close to the Falmouth's Shining Sea Bicycle Trail which runs along a lot of beach. From the trail you will have great views of the ocean and Martha's Vineyard from Falmouth to Woods Hole. The Cape Cod Canal Bicycle Trail which runs 7.5 miles along both sides of the Canal. Cape Cod Rail Trail which starts Dennis and runs 22 miles to Welfleet are both a short drive away.
There is so much for the kids to do I could stay put. If you want more suggestions of things to do on the Cape and in the Plymouth area, pm me.

RE: Bar Harbor-stay on the island or not?

The park pass is $20 a week per vehicle.
ACADIA NATIONAL PARK PASSES
"Entrance Pass - $20 June 23-early October; $10 May 1-June 22 and early October-October 31
Good for entrance into Acadia National Park for one vehicle for seven days, including the date of purchase.
Individual Entrance Pass - $5
Good for entrance into Acadia National Park for one individual (pedestrian, motorcycle, bicycle, etc.) for seven days, including date of purchase.
Acadia Annual Pass - $40
Good for entrance into Acadia National Park for one vehicle for one year from date of purchase."
We purchased two sets of two passes good for one year for $40 a set last summer. The sets were purchased on separate days, so it wasn't a mistake. I don't know if this was a special or not.

RE: Bar Harbor-stay on the island or not?

I was getting ready to post a similar question with I saw this one. If we only have 4 or 5 days in the area.. is it better to stay on the island and day trip to Camden/Rockport... or stay in Camden/Rockport area and day trip to the Acadia?
I would stay on the island, since most of your trip will be exploring the island. You will also avoid a lot of traffic traveling through Ellsworth by staying on the island. There is so much to do there that you probably won't want to leave.

RE: Bar Harbor-stay on the island or not?

Yes! Absolutely stay on the island. You won't be disappointed. Both campgrounds you mentioned are fine. I would stay away from Narrows I and II. The campground was bought a couple years ago and the new management is awful.
Bar Harbor Campground is also very nice and inexpensive, but they don't take reservations. July 4th week may be difficult to get a site being first come first serve. The KOA has unbelievable sunsets.
Don't forget to bring bicycles. 43 miles of bicycle trails throughout the park. If you are going to take a horse and buggy ride on the carriage trails through the park, book as early as you can as they fill early.
We have gone to Bar Harbor the last 4 years and stayed on the island each time.

RE: Bicycle Covers

I wound up with a large bbq gas grill cover.
I have also used gas grill cover with a Thule hanging bike rack. I found that the spray from wet roads went up inside the cover no matter how I tried to tie it down. If it is not tied down enough, they rip apart. The ADCO cover has a heavy duty zipper that encloses the bicycles. It is not a perfect solution because you have to install the bike cover while assembling the rack. The cover stays on the rack.
I do use grill covers when in campgrounds. One for each bike on the rack. This way I can ride, without uncovering DW's bike. I bungee the ADCO cover to the rack. I bought very good grill covers at Job Lot in MA for about $18 each. I have not had to replace them.
The grill cover(s) can be an inexpensive solution.
I hope this helps.

RE: East coast travel

I have driven to and from Massachusetts to Florida many times. I would find a way around DC and NY. I have sat in traffic in both places for hours.
My suggestion would be (from Florida) 95 to 26 to 77 to 81 to 380 south(couple miles) to 84 to 90(toll) to 495 to 95(toll NH and ME) to 295(no tolls) to 95(toll getting back onto 95) to 395 to 1A to 3. There is a toll down south somewhere.
May I suggest that you stay at Bar Harbor Campground. IMHO, I would not stay at either Narrows. The new management is awful. You will love Acadia National Park. We go up every year. We have stayed in the KOA (nice, but about $90/night), Narrows( awful management and about $90/night with resort fee) and Bar Harbor Campground (nice and about $38 night with the 7th night free which brings it down to $32/night). Bar Harbor is less than half of the price of the others and closest to the entrance to the park.
If I remember correctly this route has a toll down south (over a bridge I think) than a toll on 90 in Massachusetts, toll in New Hampshire on 95 and tolls on 95 in Maine. Route 295 bypasses a lot of tolls Maine. This route has spectacular views as you go through the mountains. It is known as the truckers route. From the South Shore of Massachusetts it is 120 miles longer.
If you decide to take 95 and have a class A --- DO NOT GO THROUGH THE BALTIMORE TUNNEL.--- Huge fine because of the propane tanks.
If you are looking for things to do in Bar Harbor, post again.

EDIT Corrected typo --route 14 should be 1A

RE: Bicycle Covers

After looking at several manufacturers of hitch platform bicycle racks, I bought the Thule 916 T2. I am not sure from reading your post if you have already bought a rack. If not, you might also want to look at the Yakima. I liked the Thule better.
I also bought a 5 strap Adco bicycle bag. The picture shows the two strap. This is the lowest price I found. I didn't think two straps were enough for wind behind the MH.
Since the bag covers my tail lights and magnetic lights on roof of the Grand Cherokee, I also bought a Blue Ox light bar. Thule's warranty is void if you make any modifications to the rack, so I am in the process of modifying the light bar to slip into the back of the rack where the optional two bike carrier would go.
The bikes are on the Jeep being towed behind the MH about 5 to 6,000 miles a year. I made the heavy investment because I bicycle over 600 miles a year.
I hope this helps.

RE: Florida discount camping during winter

85Eagle wrote:
I doubt whether you will find any RV park in FL that will honor Passport America for those months.
I agree, it's their season to make money. You need to go to passport America's website, select the campgrounds you might go to and see what it says about in season discounts. I have been with Passport for 3 years and I have saved some money with it, I like it.
I would doubt, however, you
could find a park in Florida that will offer the discount during the winter
months for more than maybe one night.
I booked and have a confirmation for a 5 night stay using Passport America in March at the Zachary Taylor RV Resort in Okeechobee. Check this link or call them at (888) 282-6523 and check for yourself.

RE: Oil fiters, Air Filters, Fuel Filters - What else?

I have a 2000 Mountain Aire with a ISC Cummins 350.
If it is a diesel on a Spartin chassis, it is time to change all the fluids. Transmission fluid, front axle, rear differential, hydraulic, anti freeze diesel, anti freeze generator. All filters will need to be changed: transmission, air dryer, air, anti freeze, oil, 2 fuel and hydraulic (I think there are 3 inside the canister).
The brakes will need to be adjusted.
The diesel is a Kohler, but the generator is a Power Tech out of Jacksonville, FL. They are great to deal with. I have had no major problems with mine. The dipstick may have to be replaced as the end in that era had a tendency to break off. Be gentle with the oil drain plug as I had to replace mine. A solid generator. It will idle at one speed. It does not rev up under load as the Onan does.
I did all the above last fall. If you have the same RV, I can give you most of the filter numbers. I use mostly Baldwin filters, but have a lot crossed referenced.
I had the same problem (another post you made) you did with the rear height adjustment. I used ductape to get me back on the road until I could get one.

RE: BIKE RACK ON DINGHY-CLASS A

Since the Caravan is on a dolly, the bikes will be closer to the ground. Make sure the bikes have enough clearance.
If the bikes are worth anything, I suggest that you purchase a bike bag. They will take a beating in bad weather without one.

RE: Florida discount camping during winter

I joined a couple months ago. I was also skeptical about being able to use it in Florida during the winter, but decided to give it a try. I booked and have a confirmation for a 5 night stay in March at the Zachary Taylor RV Resort in Okeechobee. I saved just over $100. I have already saved $30 for a one night stay Halloween night in Jacksonville. I am looking at another weeks stay at a Passport America campground further north for March, but have not booked it yet.
It only takes a few nights savings at Passport America campgrounds to get your money back.
In January, February and the beginning of March I am staying at campgrounds in Orlando, Pembroke Pines, Naples and Venice that do not participate in the Passport America program or do participate in the program, but not during those months.
