RE: What kind of gas mileage do you get towing?

on flat ground I can get 12-13 with Brutus, just keep the speed around 60-65 mph, when towing on the Blue Ridge Parkway I got 10-10 1/2, not too bad

RE: $7000 to spend on tow vehicle, suggestions?

racedaymechanic, Thats a nice looking rig that you have. I almost bought a 97 6.5 turbodiesel Chevy Crew Cab Dually. It was beautiful. It was $5500.00 I think. I know that the 6.5 earned a bad rap but from my research a lot of this was maintenance related, i.e. harmonic balancer failures breaking cranks, etc. I would like to put some new tires on my truck. My local tire guy recommends Firestone Transforce, which I currently have. They are ok, but they are not the best riding tires. Mine are old so that may make some impact. He also recommended some Duo brand tires as an alternative. (made by cooper?) I'd like to have some nice Michelins, we will see what I can swing, hard for me to swallow nearly $300.00 per tire at this time (I am NOT throwing stones, if I had the coin I would buy a set in a heartbeat.) Thanks! Jeremiah The 6.5s have a few issues that can be easily corrected, Mine has close to 300 hp and 500Ft Pounds of torque, and gets 12mpg towing the 5th wheel, there is a very good Forum that has alot of info on the 6.5s thetruckstop.net There are several threads on my 6.5 on it, and I just bought 6 new Michelin LTX/MS tires on Fleabay for less than 200 bucks apiece with free shipping

RE: $7000 to spend on tow vehicle, suggestions?

I have around 7k in Brutus, It has a new Engine(H1 Military take out) rebuilt trans, 6 new Michelin LTX/ MS tires all new brakes, and just about everything else has been gone thru, It is basically a new truck that tows and drives like a dream, Of course I did it all myself http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l15/fastbruce/BLP1.jpg

RE: Transfer tank, yes or no?

I have a 63 gallon wedge tank from RDS and use the gravity fill, but I also have a 12 volt valve so it will only flow when the truck is running, The fact that i have the tank has nothing to do with how often i stop to Pee, but I can fill up when I want and where I want and no be searching for fuel when i should be enjoying the trip

RE: Charlotte NC

As to Terryallans last comment about wildlife woods and lkn resort. I do believe there was a trailer park or something there were lkn resort is now. We tend to like nicer places. If we wanted to be amongst the permanents with dirt rutted roads, the we might pick wildlife woods. We prefer nice landscapes, paved roads, concrete pads and up to date amenities. But that's just us. You also have Linebergers restaurant just across the street as well. The time we went there several years ago, it was good. I would opt for lkn state park with no hook ups over wildlife woods. Linebergers is a great place to get a steak, Lk Norman SP is a good CG its in between Mooresville and Troutman Off Perth Rd.

RE: Class A on Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive?

We are about 45 minutes from the BRP and go on it alot several times a year spending multiple days, You wont have any problem with your motorhome, Just make sure your brakes are good in the last 50 miles in NC there are some pretty good grades and they go for many miles at a time

RE: Idling diesels all night

For the most part the guys idling their trucks all night don't pay for the fuel as in Company Drivers, When I was a Owner Operator I shut my truck off most any time I stopped unless it was real cold, now this was when Diesel fuel was 69 cents a gallon, I had a 1971 Cab Over Kenworth

RE: Just bought 03 2500 suburban 8.1 for steal !!!!

this truck feels like a vette!!! HAHAHA!! Ever driven a Vette? I guess after driving a 6.5 it would probably feel like a Vette but I promise, it's not. LOL!! Nice truck that's for sure. Congrats on the great deal. Hey now easy with on the 6.5"s with a little tweaking they are a very good Tow vehicle, and have great power/ Mileage

RE: Twin + Battery setup

Glad to hear I was wrong about the batteries. (I saw the corrosion on the one post.) The trickle charge now makes sense. While I have know Interstate to be good battery, none of the dealers around here will work with me to bring a pair into town. Matt I bought mine at Northern Tool, where in SE Mich are you? Im from Port Huron

Twin + Battery setup

I added a second deep cycle Battery to my Sabre for boondocking, we are only 45 miniutes from The Blue Ridge Parkway and go there often during the summer, we have a generator but don't like to run it so I added a battery and Inverter so we can watch TV and do other things at night, I can turn the inverter on and off from inside the Camper and I put a switch on the circuit the wall outlets are on so I can switch from shore power to the inverter on just those outlets, I put a plug so I can add a bank of batteries to the system if need be, I also put a Deutsch connector so I can plug a 1.5 amp charger to the Batteries without it going thru the onboard charger http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l15/fastbruce/2013-01-12_12-16-53_708_zps77218bba.jpg width=640 I made a tray out of 1 inch angle iron for the batteries to sit in http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l15/fastbruce/2013-01-12_12-16-44_100_zpsf1482a03.jpg width=620 Moderator edit to re-size pictures to forum limit of 640px maximum width.

Tailgate mod

My truck spent its first 200k miles as a plumbers truck, the tailgate was pretty beat up so instead of getting one of those 5th wheel Tailgates I made my own, had to move the latch handle down and lengthen the rods but It was worth ithttp://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l15/fastbruce/brutus_zps579ae816.jpg
