RE: What is the fuel economy, or UNeconomy, on a "C".

Mpg varies a lot with terrain,(mountain grades vs flatlands), headwinds, and altitude as well as speed vs aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance. We get 7-9mpg with our 27 foot rig. I think that claims of 11 mpg may be based on inaccurate calculation. A class C motorhome is an un-streamlined box truck full of appliances, supplies, water, gasoline and occupants. If you can't afford fuel and all of the other costs of ownership and maintenance, motorhoming is not for you.The winner, best answer posted this week. LOL I agree gas is the cheapest part of owning an RV. Two nights in our RV instead of a hotel and restaurant easily makes up for all the gas used on a week long RV vacation. We went to DC for a week. We paid $350 gas total. One night in a hotel in DC is easily $200.

RE: What is the fuel economy, or UNeconomy, on a "C".

New 28ft V10 and we get between 8 and 9 mpg depending on wind. We weigh in at 12000lbs. We have a toad but haven't towed the toad yet. We keep it 62 mph.

RE: jayco redhawk 31xl vs holiday rambler aluma lite 31sfd

We have a Redhawk 26XS and are very happy with it. The cabinets are all very nice and very sturdy. This is an entry level model so don't expect anything fancy. We looked at a lot of different RVs and we thought the Jayco was the best quality for the money. They are the only one offering a 2 year warranty in this price range. It's tough because there are so many choices. What is important for one is not important for another. For us it was headroom in the bunk. The Jayco had the most bunk headroom of any C we sat in. I can sit upright in the bunk and not hit my head. That's important when your playing PS3 with your son!

RE: Question for Honda Fit toad owners

For those that are towing the Fit what brake light kit do you use? I see that Blue Ox has a wiring harness for the CRV. I wonder if that would fit the Fit? Do any other companies have wiring harnesses? Also is it possible the brake light kit is running the battery down?

RE: Generator use question.

I had a similar experience using our PS3 on inverter. We were running down the road with the PS3 and TV on inverter. My wife decided to turn on the generator to run the microwave and the TV shutoff. We had to unplug the TV and re plug it in to get it working again. The PS3 was fine with the transition from inverter to generator but the TV did not like it.

RE: What did you do to your Class C MH today???

Just got it back from shop. It was in for two weeks to get the slide out wiper seal replaced. They did a good job it looks factory. The original seal had a tear from the factory. It was all done under warranty. Now I need to get it all ready for our big trip to DC next week. I need to get the bedroom TV mounted and install the last of the tire valve extensions. Really looking forward to DC. Son is a history buff. We will be museum hopping!

RE: Best air valve extensions for use with simulators?

rcase - tire and RV work aren't cheap, but that dealer wants to rip you. Either that or really does not want to do the project and has set a price that'll make him feel good if you decide to accept his offer. I did get the impression they did not want to do the job.

RE: Best air valve extensions for use with simulators?

Just got a quote from my shop. They wanted over $500 to install. I think I will use extensions until time to replace the tires. At least if they develop a small leak I can easily add air. So far no leaks with them in place.

RE: Four Winds or Jayco Greyhawk

LOL my heater is on the awning side. I love it that way! Its awesome to heat my hands up while I get the fire started. I have a new Jayco and before that a Forest River. I will say the Jayco is better built than the Forest River but honestly I don't think any of them are particularly built very well.

RE: Why no 12v plug

Brand new Jayco Redhawk here with no 12v outlets in the house part. The Redhawk is Jayco's budget class C so maybe the Greyhawk has them. I should also add that our 2011 Forest River Micro-lite didn't have 12v outlets either.

RE: Itasca Cambria 30

We just bought the Jayco Redhawk 26XS which is structurally similar to the Greyhawk with a lower price point. We are missing a lot of the amenities the Greyhawk has as standard but they are built the same. Structurally the Jayco and Winnie's are the same welded aluminum structure. I don't think there is much different. Correct me if I am wrong. The big Jayco positives for us are as follows: 2 Year warranty Fiberglass front cap Large holding tanks in the smaller floor plans Head room in front bunk The fiberglass front cap was a big deal for us. You have to buy the Access Premier before you can get the fiberglass front cap on the Winnie. With the Jayco we were able to get all the above for less than 60k. If it wasn't for the Redhawk we would probably still be towing a TT. We have too many school loans to take care of before we can move out of the entry level models. In the end they are both nice and it may come down to which floor plan you like best. The good news is I don't think either are going bankrupt any time soon... Fingers crossed.

RE: Tank Heaters Pointless?

I will need to spend more time looking underneath my Redhawk but I am pretty sure there are exposed lines under the motor home. My tank heaters are on the fresh, gray and black tanks. There are no heaters on the lines. I do not have a heated and enclosed underbelly. Any idea about what temp I can camp in safely?

Tank Heaters Pointless?

I have a 2013 Jayco Redhawk with tank heaters. It got down to 22F the other night while camping. I got to thinking about the pipes and decided to winterize the RV. My understanding is the tank heaters heat the tanks but the water lines are still exposed and vulnerable to freezing. Is this true? The tank heaters just heat the tanks and nothing else correct? So in short do you still have to winterize the lines when camping in 22F weather with the tank heaters on? Also when the tank heaters are on how can you tell they are really on? My fresh water tank is above the fuel tank and I can not reach in and feel the heating pad. Sorry for the newbie question. I searched and could not find anything.

RE: GARMIN GPS, not happy any more

For those interested in Copilot Live GPS for phone It does in fact have a RV mode to use for your trip planning and guidance. CoPilot Live CoPilot has had the trucking versions for OTR truckers in GPS devices for many years and now with all the smart phones the MOBIL versions are every where Hmmm this seems like a viable alternative that is worth pursuing. According to the website it offers off line maps, RV specific routing and it's only $10. It looks like traffic and weather is extra. I usually use Google maps but as another poster pointed out that only works when you have signal. This solves that problem. I think for $10 it's worth trying.

RE: Scary Handling Problem

Weighed it a while back - front axle - 3480 rear axle - 8420 I'll have to look at the tire sizes tomorrow. What is the gross axle weight rating for the front axle and what is it for the rear? I think you are very close to be underloaded on the front axle I think he is under loaded on the front end. If what I read is true the manufacturer wants minimum 32% on front axle. His numbers above would put him at 29% on the front axle. Mine is very similar and it also is squirrely on the road. I just got mine and haven't check pressures or gotten it aligned. I hope those two things will fix it. I can tell you if it was mine I would replace all 6 tires with good name brand tires. The grand it would cost me would be worth the peace of mind.

12V Power Outlets Always On

My Jayco Redhawk 26XS sits on a E450 chassis. It has three 12v power ports up front. Two are in the center console and 1 is in the glove box. All three power ports are powered all the time. This is really frustrating for us as we constantly have to remember to unplug phones, NAV, games etc. I had an F150 and it was the same way. Is there an easy way to convert these to switch off with the ignition? I am sure this has been discussed before but I could not find anything by searching. Thanks, Rodney

It's been a while since we had an update to this thread. Did DunnInn get his steering problems fixed?

RE: Charlotte,NC RV show

My family and I also went to the Charlotte RV show and we were disappointed as well. There were very few class C's there. But they had one we really liked and we bought it! We bought the Jayco Redhawk 26XS. It's an entry level model but I have to say it's packed with a lot of nice amenities for being an entry level model. We could not be happier. There were a lot of high end fifth wheels and several pop-ups.

Southeast RV shows - which to attend?

It's that time of year again. There are three shows that are near me coming up in the next few weeks. There is a show in Greenville SC, Charlotte NC and Greensboro NC. We attended the Charlotte show last year and there were very few dealers there. Which show is the biggest? Which should we attend?

RE: GM/Chevy 4500--what year?

There is a whole series of videos that Mike Rowe did for Ford. Here is one talking about the Diesels Mike Rowe - Diesel Video. There are also videos with Mike Rowe concerning the new F150 turbo V6. Also on the Ford website there are plenty of videos touting how much better they are. My whole point of this was to get real world information concerning the E450 vs the 4500 chassis. All these videos don't really show me much because because they are often deceptive. I don't particularly like either one but the camper I like is offered in either a Ford or Chevy chassis. It would be nice to get opinions that are unbiased but that is almost impossible to find.
