RE: Las Vegas, NV to Lee Vining, CA

Hmmmm....we don't remember any 'dropoffs'???? To us it was an easy drive. There are several good deep take your breath away dips out on the flats past the first steep grade, but before you get to the Jeffery Pine forest. You have to be traveling at a good speed to really enjoy them.

RE: 7 pin connector lock?

We boondock with our offroad trailer frequently. Since the trailer is often parked in the middle of no where, I wired a female 7 pin into the front of the tongue box, so the cable between the trailer and the vehicle is male/male. The cable gets unpluged on both ends and stored in the tow vehicle. As added security, trailer hitch slides into a receiver on the trailer tongue, so when we drive off and leave the trailer, it has no hitch and no trailer plug.

RE: dc water pump occasionally runs without a faucet on

After having worked on many many 12v diaphragm pumps, I would try popping the front cover off of the pump, remove the valve assembly and closely inspect each of the valves. A small piece of plastic from drilling the hole for the bulkhead fitting or a small piece of teflon tape could be lodged under one of the valve, allowing the pressure to leak back.

RE: Any Issues with 1999 Fleetwood Terry?

Our fridge will shut down at times while traveling, but I think I just need to clean out the propane jet. We mostly boondock so we converted to a pair of L16 6 volt batteries. We bought the Terry about 5 years ago. We needed 12' to fit the Suzuki. We were looking for a toy hauler for almost two years that would give us the weight capacity, a 12' garage for the Suzuki and still keep the over all length reasonable. The Terry was a good fit for us.

RE: Any Issues with 1999 Fleetwood Terry?

We also have a 99 Terry. They came in two or three lengths. Ours is 33'. No problem areas that we've discovered. http://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss222/reasley/IMG_0476.jpg width=640 http://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss222/reasley/DeathValley004.jpg width=640 We did find the capacity of the water tank in error. Instead of the 55 gallons listed on the tag, it's actually 110 gallons.

RE: Waste Water Totes Seem To Be A Waste

I spent a few years in the plastics industry and gained a little knowledge of polyethylene. Premature cracking can be caused by a number of things. Most of revolve around the manufacturer attempting to reduce production cost. Polyethylene needs additives to get maximum life. Foremost are ultraviolet inhibitors which tend to be very pricy. If you can reduce the quantity your costs go down. The effect of ultraviolet light will vary depending on your location. Polyethylene will have a shorter life in Arizona or California than in Michigan or Georgia (cloud cover). One of the other big factors is repro. Not every unit comes out of the mold in perfect condition and these rejects are ground up and repelletized. When added back into virgin resin it can embrittle the finished product. Some molders will sell or use the scrap in the production of products where this is not a concern, such as C&A film (polyethylene sheeting). When added back into a product where a long life is important it can lead to premature failure. Of course the other issue is pulling the tank behind a vehicle. Barker says that damage sustained by pulling the tank faster than walking speed (3 mph)will not be covered under warranty.

RE: Repairing fuel station pump

I've been reluctant to wade into the discussions regarding these fueling station pumps. I have some experience with GPI pumps. I can't speak to any other brands. GPI builds 2 versions of their small pump, the EZ8 and the RV8. If I am not mistaken the difference between between them is the inlet/out casting and the accessories that are package with the pump. The pumps are designed to pump up to 8 gallons per minute with a 3' lift. The flow will be reduced by increasing the lift or decreasing the suction hose size. Reducing the outlet hose size can reduce the flow somewhat, but not a great deal, mostly just an increase in pressure. The EZ8 comes packaged with a 5/8" outlet hose. The RV8 is a bare pump that is sold to manufacturers. I have an RV8 and an EZ8 on my work bench. They use the same pump and motor, but the EZ8 has a 1" inlet where the RV8 is 3/4". The EZ8 also has the nozzle bracket and switch attached to the side of the pump, where the RV8 just has a bracket for the switch. As to gear issues. I had a conversation with one of GPI's service engineers regarding the gears. While the fuel used may cause some minor swelling of the gears, the engineer stated that they had manufactured the pumps with a slightly oversized gear. These gears were white in color. GPI has stated that they will send a set of the newer grey gears at no charge for those who are having problems. I am not looking to start an argument over pumps, just passing along some of what I've learned.

RE: Grt.Basin Nat'l Pk...Y a Nat'l Pk?

If one studies the history of many of the NP's established in the last century, one finds that commercial interests have often been at the heart of the push for NP status. I'm not sure that calls the legitimacy of those parks into question. I agree with you. The local economy is certainly important, but I didn't find that Great Basin National Park was much different than many other parts of Nevada and while we enjoyed the time spent there, it just didn't seem to be of National Park caliber. I think some the best parts were actually out side the park. They missed a great opportunity to included some of the local history of the area by not including the ghost town of Osceola just at the northwest edge of the park. There is a great display of fence post art just outside the gate. The local ranchers have built an excellent educational display along the south side of the entrance.

RE: Grt.Basin Nat'l Pk...Y a Nat'l Pk?

In the case of Great Basin it was transferred from the BLM to the Park Service for the profit potential. Of course this is only my opinion. Lehman Caves NM was already administered by the NPS, not the BLM! As for profit potential, the admission fees to NM's and NP's are determined on a unit by unit basis, so the fee could have gone up without changing the designation. Yep I was wrong. It had been administered by the National Forest Service not BLM. It was transfered in 33 as a subset of Zion NP. The profit was certainly not to the government. Harry Reid was responding to the Ely area business community. The town was suffering badly from Kennecott's closure of the local mine and mill. National Park status brings people (OP) to the area and that means money in the local economy.

RE: Grt.Basin Nat'l Pk...Y a Nat'l Pk?

I guess one could ask a similar question about some other NP's. How about Hot Springs NP (the one I question most)? Or are Wind Cave NP or Mammoth Cave NP more National Park-like than Great Basin NP? You are quite right. National Parks are created by acts of congress. As we have often seen congress does many things that are not exactly done for the right reasons. Usually they follow the advice of the park system administration, but not always. In the case of Great Basin it was transferred from the BLM to the Park Service for the profit potential. Of course this is only my opinion.

RE: UPDATE Death Valley Sequoia King Canyon Yosemite

However Mid April in Yosemite is our favorite time of year. The falls are roaring, the Dogwood is starting to bloom and best of all, the tourists are somewhere else. What are the changes of getting a campsite in Yosemite valley for a 32 foot Travel trailer (+ TV = 65 feet overall) in Mid-April? Unfortunately I can't help you with that. While we pull our 5th wheel all over the place, we do not camp in Yosemite. We are inholders and have a cabin in Wawona. That and we live just outside the park.

RE: Grt.Basin Nat'l Pk...Y a Nat'l Pk?

Great Basin National Park is not unique geography in Nevada. Just to the north of GBNP in the Ruby Mountains is Lamoille Canyon. A glaciated canyon created much like Yosemite Valley. http://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss222/reasley/1356807810.jpg "width=700+ http://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss222/reasley/1356807817.jpg "width=700" The National Monument status was granted to protect Lehman Caves and the surrounding area from private exploitation. In 1986 as the local copper mining industry was collapsing, then representative Harry Reid responding local business needs introduced a bill to turn Lehman Caves National Monument into a National Park in the hopes of creating more tourist traffic. The bill passed.

You are correct about Death Valley. Temps begin their climb towards triple digits in March. However Mid April in Yosemite is our favorite time of year. The falls are roaring, the Dogwood is starting to bloom and best of all, the tourists are somewhere else. There are a lot of things to do and see in California. What are your interests?

RE: Grt.Basin Nat'l Pk...Y a Nat'l Pk?

Not all National Parks have ferris wheels and roller coasters. The NPS does their best to preserve at least some of the natural beauty and history of our country before some idiot carves "Kilroy was here" in a 5,000 year old Bristlecone Pine tree. Always a good idea to stop at the NPS visitor center to see why a site was protected as a National Park and get tips on what to see and do. I am not aware of any National Parks with ferris wheels and roller coasters. We spent a great deal of time in the visitor center, but still came away with no understanding of why it was promoted from Lehman Caves National Monument to National Park status. We spend a lot of time in Nevada camping, hiking and ghost towning. We are not drive thru tourists.

If you have the time, the Mountain Meadow massacre site is worth a stop. It's not far out of St George on 18.

RE: Grt.Basin Nat'l Pk...Y a Nat'l Pk?

We were there in June and I would have to agree that it is a nice place but hardly worth National Park status. When we were there it was crowded.

We stay at the hot springs when we visit Death Valley. There is a very interesting airplane parked in front of equally interesting business back towards Beatty.

X2 on the rest area just beyond Tonopah. They have plenty of room, a dump station and fresh water fill. Best of all... it's free. Thank you Nevada

RE: Poll: Does the US Forest Service's TMR go too far?

I've picked up Motor Vehicle Use Maps from Inyo, 3 Stanislaus and 2 of the Humbolt Toiyabe National Forest district offices and I've never been charged anything. Please check on the forest service's website and you'll see that they are free. If you are being charged for these maps you need to go up the chain of command and demand a refund and ask that disciplinary action be taken. Yes, we get locked out of much of the Sierra's in the winter months. However I have trouble complaining. The kid's with their 4x4 lifted pickups seem to enjoy turning the roads into mud bogs.
