RE: '90 Chevy 1/2 Ton 305 V8

i had 90 extended cab long box 1/2 and the 6,400 gvw sounds about right.. i know it would haul that camper around it might not like it... i used to haul scrap in mine even had 2 tons on it once.. so i know they will move the weight.. if your going to haul it i would recomend getting some 16" wheels and some d range tires...

RE: New To TCs. Have A Few Questions

as for the jacks have you checked all the connections for corrision and tightness.. barring that the jacks might just be getting weak..

RE: Spare tire hanger ???

sounds like you bent something when you were hammering that socket on..those spare hangers are touchy.. get a new one from a salvage yard and be sure to check the cable for frays.. having someone's spare come out in front of you on the expressway is no fun..

RE: Modding an F-350 up or an F-550 down for TC

if your going for wieght carrying capacity go with the cab chasssis trucks.. the friends i worked for looked at a 2012 f450 pick up and the dealer told them only difference between that and a f350 was the price..same frame, axles, and tires.. 2013 ford specs agree with that..

RE: Modding an F-350 up or an F-550 down for TC

KD4UPL - Another reason for wheel wells is to accommodate larger tires for offroad use. Check out the first post in this thread for what I'm thinking about - these are 41".
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/78090-Customized-hard-side-camper-examples
the alaskan on the dodge is very cool.. you could also go with 265/70r19.5's on custom wheels this is the route i am thinking of going.. if i build the f550 it will have a pick up bed because in michigan the rule is anything with a flatdeck or utility body is commercial.. not sure how strictly that is enforced anymore as i stopped running flatbeds as soon as i got tired of being pulled over...

RE: Any Experience With Insulation?

is there some kind of sheeting behind the boards in your truck..the drygoods bodies i have worked on had vertical members that got panels attached to if this is the case in your's it will give your another 3/4in if i remember the depth of the uprights..3in insulation would be nice and if i build another camper it will have it..good luck on your project

RE: Modding an F-350 up or an F-550 down for TC

Recycler, as a matter of fact, I just did that.
I was using an 07 Ram 3500 dually, with stabil loads, air bags, and Rancho 9000xls, but found an 08 Ram 4500 that I fell in love with and bought it.
I'll be posting the pics soon, but I can tell you- there's a world of difference!
Ram 3500 maxed out at 12,200 total weight, the 4500 handles 16,400 and that's with 4 wheel drive!
I set the camper down on it, and it barely moved 2 inches. I won't need air bags or stabil loads on this one.
yep the 99 f550 i was looking at was rated at 17,500 and being as i figure my franklin is going to weigh about 5,000 when done i figured the extra capcity would be nice..

RE: Modding an F-350 up or an F-550 down for TC

biggest problem with the 450/550 is putting a regular bed as the wheelbase is 3in longer than a standard pick up so the companies that convert them add fiberglass extensions on the front or you could shorten one.. mounting a box is easy you have to put angle brackets on the frame.. i would go with a 450/550 c&c for a larger tc.. i have studied this subject heavily as i planned on doing as such myself

RE: Which one: Ford F250 6.2 or GM 2500HD 6.0?

i think your brother should test drive one of both and see which is most comfortable for him to drive.. i would bet either would hual your camper fine..

RE: Do I really need a Dually?

Thank you all for the help! As I suspected, I will go with the DRW.
It sound like I will still want air bags, sway bars and and the overload? Shocks?
I will be hauling an open race car trailer and dry camping at tracks around the West.
BTW, rare for me to give kudos to the RV sales guys, but the one I've been dealing with is very professional. He was only stating the delivery experience of putting the 990 on SRW. He said DRW would be better handling.
Thanks,
Mark
bigger sway bars are always good with something that tall.. shocks are a yes if is used truck, and the bags if it squats to much..

RE: HDT Tow Vehicle question. Commercial or not?

The only problem you will face is by leaving it a tandem drive, and having apportioned plates, USDOT number, etc. you will still have to log miles for IFTA, and stop at every scale, even when towing your 5er. The only thing you won't have to do while towing your 5er, or while on personal business is run a log book.
How much you will earn will depend on how much you owe for the truck. You will have to have commercial insurance, DOT physical/drug test, IRS HVUT, and so on.......
Is all this the same if it is singled?
even if it is single axle plus don't forget you will have to get a fuel permit for every state you go to.. have been looking into doing something similiar with f550 I'm building to haul my tc..

RE: Do you like your cabover bed?

i love having the cab over of the tc makes the unit shorter and i have seen a couple that did not have them.. i think they were just bunk house kind of things.. as for getting into the bed with bad knees.. i added two steps and will be adding a grab handle on the ceiling to pull myself up..

RE: Our custom true flatbed truck camper build thread

nice progress on the camper... 1/2 inch ply on 1 inch steel tube for the roof I would say walking on it should not be a problem... was going to suggest notching the frame under the WH, but that would make it different height from others may have to move frame member over it up
