RE: Theft at campgrounds

we haven't had any thing stolen but we dont leave any thing of significant value out.. stained aged folding chairs.. a card table with a vinyl top thats got some tares in it.
really the most valueble thing i leave outside (when dry camping) that isn't locked down is my powercord (100' 10ga) most people dont know that thats expensive and if i leave the CG it comes with me.

RE: Sears, we hardly knew ye...

I’ll chime in as a former sears employee i worked in hard lines i was the acting sales manager for that area (while the actual manager was on maternity leave)... i knew she wasn't coming back so i assumed the job was mine they turned around and hired some one that had worked for the company longer but worked on the blue side (appliances)... so i left and started a career that has served me well.
you probably didn't need to know that but i enjoy telling that story, shortly after i left (about 9 years ago) they totally stripped their management out at a corporate level all the way down including the guy who got the job i thought i was going to have and let them go. Completely changed their service model from the commission based sales experts to minimum wage staff that didn't have the incentive to sell and thus learn about the products they were selling.
IMO... that’s what sears had going for them they had staff that knew what they were selling they knew how to fix what they sold and they stood behind their product with 30 day money back on every thing which not every one was doing at the time. they changed their service model to the what i call dut duh duh model without giving the dut duh duh's infrastructure to support their dut duh duh ways... ie: modern inventory systems, product information databases, etc. this infrastructure would have enabled them not to study up on their products and
now the only time any one wants to shop at sears is when soft lines are 75% off or they need to get a flat tire fixed... i will say the sears auto center seems to be booming. I also just got a settlement check from sears on a class action lawsuit because of a flaw in their payroll system that underpaid me without me knowing about it.

RE: Kids and Setting up Camp

my kids dont help but i think they might still be a little young, 6 years old... honestly when the time comes to park and setup its more because i think they get in the way more than they help. next year i'm going to start finding some tasks they can do.
now in contrast i'm probably not the senior generation your looking for a response from BUT.. at 6 years old i was cutting the lawn on our 2 acre lot.. i'm lucky if i can get my kids to put away the clothes i've folded for them.. go figure.

RE: Inviting Other Kids & how to handle it??

there is 3 pages already but for some reason i'm compelled still to insert my opinion...
its driven by charity.. if your inviting some one that maybe doesn't have the money and your wanting to share the experiance with them it should make you feel good and your going to come out of pocket for that feeling. your also hopefully making the event more enjoyable for your son.
now if this is a family who has money, or this is a frequent event then there comes a point where you need to decide that hey i'm doing a favor rather than asking for one so maybe they can pay some expense here. i read one of the earlyer responses saying dont call it grocery money.. right just come up with a number thats based on expense spcific to the one child.
if you proposed that to me i would not be offended... and you shouldn't be offended if i said no, i may not have the money, i may not want to invest in you/your time spending time with my child.
tons of different ways of looking at this but if i were in your shoes and this was something that happens more than once or twice a year id ask for reimbursement, thats how i roll. i'm not in your shoes though i have two 6 year old girls that keep eachother company i have to worry about paying some one to keep one or both of them home!

RE: how do you plan your trips?

kids are in school, i work and my wife does some consulting so vacations are on a schedule unfortunatley it depends on if you think you will still have fun if the first rv park or campground you roll into is full and you are going to have to find some where else to setup...
our last week long rv trip was to disneyland and sea world sandiego zoo etc along southern california we made reservations at each stop... san diego was full so its a good thing we did if we didn't have some where comfy to park it would have put a damper on our trip.
i hear the, dont become a slave to the schedule arguement... but i think way of thinking is geared more towards those who dont only get 1 vacation a year or whos vacation is more one of exploration vs. event driven.

RE: Traveling with furnace running

i've heard of a few on here that get away with doing it... i tried it once pilot wouldn't stay lit.
ill caption that by saying the note made above about turning it on durring check in is brilliant, my heater takes roughly 20-30 minutes to get to tempature which means you would probably only be a little bit cold for 5-10 minutes by the time you get parked if you setup quickly.
if your not at a resort i assume your going to have to level and that should take about the same time as checking in... i'm heading out in a couple weeks and ill be doing this.

RE: Cheapest way to power a full desktop PC on the road?

what if you hook it up to a back up battery power type thingy? and power that with your small inverter?
bumpy
that would have been my initial suggestion before the word cheap was inserted... i personally wouldn't worry about a puresine if it was flowing through a battery... also comes into play with a laptop your not powering the laptop your powering the battery/charging the battery when its plugged in (in *most* laptops i'm sure tehre is an exception out there) thus the cheap invertor works for me.

RE: Puting Pink Stuff into fresh water tank

Had mine since 2004. Haven't used the fresh tank yet, and yes we dry camp. Had the pup for 5 years. Took the fresh water tank out for more storage sspace. Dry camped in it as well. So, not every one uses the fresh tank. I find it to be too much trouble. I'm pretty lazy. Yes I said it. I'm lazy.
dry camping without FW? you use a bucket? me solo i could probably get away with that but with a family no way.

inverter... check your wattage needs and decide if you need a printer.. for me at least i found the printer was the most power hungry device.

RE: iPhone

there is a sim card (it requires a tool to access that should have come with your iphone mine did) and the battery can be changed its not an easy process if you cant use a sodering iron but it can be done...
i have not tried this but have read that you can get away with not using the data plan by installing a 3rd party apn/profile it basically disables the data on the iphone for edge and 3g and limits it to wifi only.. the phone can still then be used to make phone calls.
i recomend a google search and caption this would require a jailbrake. but both the profile installation and the jailbrake are reversable. i have installed a 3rd party profile on my phone for tethering and it did not harm my iphone however my laptop did not like my iphone (i have a custom version of XP coprorate).

RE: Puting Pink Stuff into fresh water tank

in short ill say dont put it in the tank, take 30 minutes to an hour to install a T to pump out of the jug.
its going to take you about the same amount of time to get the pink stuff out of the FW tank.. i know you said you wont use your FW tank but your probably wrong at some point you will want to use it otherwise it wouldn't be there right?

ill caption the jailbraking = voided warranty warning by saying the jailbrake is reversable by running a restore on the phone.

RE: Speedtest.net question

pinging is how long it takes for your computer to send a small amount of data to a target computer/server + how long it takes that computer to respond and your computer recieve the response.
over air id pay more attention to packetloss that typically has a greater impact on what you as a user notice as browsing speed. packetloss is when that packet due to service interuption doesn't make it to the host and then the computers negotiate to find out what data was lost and re-send it.

RE: AT&T may have to limit iPhone users

i dont think it will happen and if it does it would be for new plan sales right? how are they going to require me to have a data package and then change the terms of what the data package includes after i've already signed into a contract with them.
i pretty much use wifi only if they pulled something like this on me id use it as an excuse to change carriers.

mine does it even under cover but its not uncommon to have 105 degree tempatures here... grease is cheap add some if its low. if the jack works use it if it doesn't replace it.
