RE: Air Compressor Projects - Anyone?

I bought a $69 Harbor Freight compressor rated to 150 psi.
Clicky
It connects directly to the battery with no compressor tank.
It filled my dual tires fine. My on board air could not get me to 100psi.
I have not tried the fronts that I run at 150 psi yet.
Looks good so far.

RE: How old is too old?

I bought my Overland when it was 13 yrs old. It is now 17 yrs old.
I do a lot of the work my self with the exception of major things like dash a/c rebuild, Allison transmission computer problems, manifold gasket replacement and rear end differential replacement. I have $10-12 k in these items. I have fixed countless other items - I pretty much am working on it constantly. Some of the items like slide repair and Big Foot leveler repair would have been quite costly in labor. If it goes to the shop I expect it to be a min. of $1500.
My rig cost $36k, so the 50% estimate above is probably quite accurate.
But I could 't buy a rig of that quality for $55k, so I have no regrets and I enjoy doing the work.
If you don't do your own work it will cost double that not counting all the time taking it to the shop and waiting for a week before they work on it.
And remember you don't know something is broke most times until you are taking it on a trip. Shops can ruin a lot of vacations with the time to have them fix it.
My 2 cents worth.

RE: Passport America Lifetime, Thanks all, I'll pass

Received the e-mail offering me the $399 lifetime membership. Last time I renewed it was for 3 years at $109. That means that at $399 I paid $36.34 a year. At that rate it will take me roughly 11 years to break even. Who knows if they will be in business in 11 years or that at 79 years of age I will be using it enough to make it worth the money. You have to run the numbers and make your own decision. I passed. As far as Freedom Resorts, I personally can't see buying a membership to get 25% off when there are so many other options that you may already belong to that will get you at least 10% at no extra charge.
X2 - and I am only 50. I question the biz model. And the quality of the campgrounds willing to participate.

RE: windshild problem

That can be caused by twisting the frame while lifting with the jacks.
Make sure you lift in pairs.
The stress cracks are an important fact. If it was just the design flaw there would not be stress cracks.

RE: GPS, What a good one for RV'ing?

If you have an Ipad, I like the new Rand McNally RV GPS app. It is $99 and is the same as the stand alone version for $329.
I am going to get the app and put the extra $229 towards my new Ipad.
iPad is 9 1/2" GPS is only 7 "

RE: Aid to backing up with toad

Very interesting, everyone has an opinion.
I especially like the ones saying they never had to back up and also how they check every turn they are going to make on google.
I for one don't live a planned life. I don't have campgrounds reserved days in advance and never deviate from the plan. I might even want to stop along the way.
When driving, there are many times I have not stopped because I could not tell if I could get out of the lot. You can't prepare all your stops. In fact I wouldn't want to, it defeats the purpose of having a motorhome. I might as well stay at Motel 6.
By the way these dollies were only intended for very short distances, usually a couple of feet is all that is needed. I have a 41.5 ft mh and over sized tires. I have a very wide turning radius. They of course would only be used where the lot is smooth.
Backing 2 ft in a lot that I could push the car by hand is not going to damage the tow bar.
Happy travels.

Aid to backing up with toad

I found a way to get you out of those tight places and you need to back up.
I started a thread about backing with a toad. It seems it depends a lot on the toad your pulling. I pull a pilot, I can only back couple of inches.
So I got a pair of car dollies. Does the trick.

RE: Curious about maintenance...

Cummins diesel, do my own service and most of my own repairs. The biggest benefit is knowing how the coach works. I won't miss any trips because of some simple problem that takes just a few minutes to fix. While the guy who has a shop do all if his work doesn't have a clue what to do.
Simple things like resetting a breaker on the leveling jacks can ruin their whole trip.
Wasted hours taking to the shop and waiting for them to actually look at it then charge a few hundred dollars.

RE: Tethering Speed

You probably wouldn't want to pay the cost for data.
Not any worse than cable internet. Data is what it is all about.
You must not use your Internet much if you think you can get anywhere close on cost of data on tethering vs unlimited data on a home Internet.
Possible exception is t-mobile and sprint advertising unlimited data I think. But good luck getting coverage every where you go.

RE: Big Foot Leveling system

If you have the quad, there on red caps on top of the fluid reservoir on each jack.
Use a zip tie or like as a dip stick. Dextron II or III transmission fluid.

RE: Macerator modification help

Hard to see from picture , but I have a 90 bend with swivel ends where you have the 45. I can take it apart at 90 with minimal amount of spillage of left over gray water. Only use macerator to dump at home.
Will you post a picture please?

Macerator modification help

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x334/rexabbot/macerator2_zps8c5bdf27.jpg height=300 width=300
I have the current set up for my macerator as seen in the the pics.
I am trying to think of a way I can modify the setup to allow an easy choice between using the 3" stinky slinky or the macerator.
It is not that hard to take off the macerator now. I just take a screw out holding it to the wall and then turn the whole think and it comes off the Y connector. But that is more than I would like to do on a every day basis to be able to use my 3" hose.
Any ideas??

RE: Front Windshield Separation

Just had it done. $250 per side for a split windshield.
Don't use the black silcone sealant it makes the gasket shining and the glue won't stick. With
You will need to get a new gasket if that happens.
