RE: Dash Cam

I use the GoPro Hero3 camera mounted on my dash. It works great and can also be used for various other movies during a trip.

RE: New to us RV

Where did you buy the unit. Is there any chance that it had any kind of flood or high water damage? Electrical problems can be difficult to trace. There could be a loose connection, rodent damage, previous owner tampering, etc.

BTW - The 8.1L doesn't seem to come close in longevity compared to the V10. It's hard to find a 200K 8.1, and those that have made it that far are clearly worn out and down on power. At least that has been my experience. BTW, any Ford from 1997 to 2003 had the spark plug blow out problem and then the 2004 to 2007 had the stripped spark plug thread problems. These resulted in a class action lawsuit against Ford to get them to step up and take care of the problem. Many GM 8.1 L engines run well past 100K. I'm not sure where you got this information but it is clearly not from experience. I have my second one, in an RV, that is close to 100K right now and I don't even burn any oil in a typical 5000-7000 mile trip. Down on power, not hardly in my Class A. Some people maintain their engines as well as their tires, which is why some people will always have problems. Since we are talking about engines in an RV, who cares how long a Ford engine will last in a pick-up truck, as a previous poster pointed out. How many engines in Class A RV's have gone past 100K? The true facts are that very few RV's ever reach 100K miles and either the Ford or GM engine will still be ruining strong when/if they do get to that mileage.

If someone is looking for a NEW gasser, so why worry about it? They only have one choice and it is the Ford chassis, period. If they want to go to a diesel, than they will have more choices. They cannot get the Allison transmission on the NEW or used Ford chassis. Since you are looking at a used coach, that is already out of warranty, then look for the floor plan that works best for you. Both engines will get you where you want to go and both will get you over the mountains. In some chassis configurations, the WH chassis has a greater towing capacity than the Ford. The Workhorse brake issue has been dealt with and is no longer an issue. The fires in the Ford engines has been dealt with and is also no longer an issue. Parts are available for both chassis and 99% of the items that you will need are available off the shelf at most parts stores. Some like the Allison transmission, but the newer Ford transmission is probably just as good. Find a floor plan that suits you and forget about the chassis make because you will never wear out either one of them.

RE: Warranty question

If the problem was a switch or wiring supplied by Freightliner, they should cover it with their warranty. If it was a problem with the way the headlights were installed on the front cap, than Fleetwood should cover it with their warranty. Perhaps if you contact Fleetwood, they will reimburse you for the cost of repairs, if it was a Fleetwood problem fixed by Freightliner. Kinda hard for you to GUESS where the problem is on an electrical issue so it leaves you with taking it to a service center convenient to you and hoping for the best.

RE: Passport America Lifetime, Thanks all, I'll pass

I use Passport every time we travel. We very seldom spend more than one day at an enroute stop towards our destination so we are just looking for a place to park and sleep. I have found that through the years, Passport America has more than paid for itself. Some of their parks are great, and some of their parks are not. Not much different than KOA in my opinion. Personally I don't feel that a lifetime subscription is worthwhile for us. To me it is more about the long term viability of the business rather than the few dollars saved.

RE: Allegheny tunnel

The only tunnel that we have run into so far that restricted propane was the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel. All it required was an inspection to make sure that the valve was turned off.

RE: Motorhome tire life?

I forgot to add that if you do decide to change them out, be sure to negotiate a trade-in credit against your new tires. Your tires have some value either as is or to be sold as carcasses for recapping. Never let a tire dealer talk you into him just keeping your tires without giving you some kind of a credit. All you have to do is ask.

I would guess at least another two years of service BUT the problem is that you do not know the history of those tires. They may only have 14,000 miles but they could have been run under inflated the whole time. They could have been run into curbs and potholes, etc. If it were me, I would put new tires on now, but you may just want to have the tires taken off the rims and thoroughly inspected. while doing that, you may want to install new valve stems.

RE: Painting interior vinyl

You can get very creative when you paint the interior of your coach. We used to texture coat the interior walls of hotels and those same techniques can be used by anyone that wants to do the same in their MH. After the wall is cleaned and properly prepared, it should be primed first. Then a solid background color can be applied to the wall. From Home Depot you can get an inexpensive hopper gun. In this gun you can add the texture colored paint, and using a small compressor you can spray on a contrasting texture coat to add depth and some interest to your wall surfaces. This is not difficult and can be done by anyone with a little skill as long as you do not mind masking off the surrounding areas in the coach.

RE: Fuel Mileage

I'm guessing anywhere from 5-12 MPG, depending on if you are towing and if the road is flat, or if you are in the mountains out West. Naturally headwinds will also affect your mileage. The best thing to expect from ANY MH is poor mileage that will shift from very very poor, to just poor, depending on the road conditions. If you plan on using the coach a lot, in all kinds of conditions and on all kinds of road, you may be able to use 8-9 as an "average" that will also vary depending on your cruising speed.

OK, you guy got the word from the Federal Government. None of you can drive on the highway until you get this fixed. If you are in an RV park, stay there. If you are en-route and have stopped for fuel, stay there. If you are at home or have the coach in storage, leave the coach where it is. I am sure that any repairs will be by a mechanic coming to your site, wherever you are. Yeah, right. :B

RE: Safari trek

There than what chassis it is on, a BIG factor in handling is wheelbase/overall length. Many Treks have a very poor (very short) wheelbase to overall length ratio. That long overhang negatively affects handling and ride. Having put many miles on the shortest(24') and the longest Treks(30'), I have never had a problem with poor handling or poor ride. I have found, from actual driving experience, that proper load management is the key to better handling rather than some arbitrary wheel base ratio. A poorly loaded coach will handle bad, no matter what the wheelbase ratio is, or overhang length.

RE: Has anyone glassed the front / rear end cap seams??

If you could fiberglass the front and rear caps, across the top and down BOTH sides, then you may have something similar to a boat hull. By just fiberglassing the top, it may allow the front and rear cap to flex/shift too much and crack the connection. I would clean both surfaces very well, and just use Eternabond tape, which should be good for another five years, before doing it again.

RE: Flood! What now?

If they are like most insurance companies, they will send someone out to give an estimate as to the amount of damage. If it exceeds $1000, and they find things that you may have missed, fine. If it is less than $1000, it will cost you nothing for having called them. If it happens to be an estimate of $2000, I assume that they will write you a check, LESS the deductible, which would still put you ahead, especially if you do the repairs yourself.

RE: Flood! What now?

There are several National companies that deal with flood damage. They will probably load the coach with dehumidifiers to dry out things as quickly as possible and then take care of any mold that may creep in. Your biggest problem may be the floor underlayment delaminating if plywood, or just coming apart if particle board. AFTER everything has been dried out, check all of your electrical. Shut off water OUTSIDE whenever leaving the coach, even if just for a meal at a restaurant. Leaks will always happen when you are gone.

Owner of company was just here. Bottom line owner said no excuse, major screw up on their part. Asked installer what he was thinking, he said something about people with rv,s hooking up to their dryer outlet led him to make an assumption. At this point he kind of drifted off. I don't think he has a job any more. Owner said will pay for any and all repairs. Great news and kudos to the company owner for great customer service. Be sure to recommend this company to others. :)

RE: Safe-T-Plus problem

Adjust it by driving down the road and putting a mark on the steering wheel that aligns with a mark on the dash, when the coach is going straight. Then park and raise the front wheels off of the ground. Adjust the steering stabilizer to line up the two marks that you previously put on your steering wheel and dash.

RE: Help I'm bugged...

Soak them until they soften and then use a clay bar to scrub the surfaces. It will leave the surface perfectly smooth and ready for wax. It will also not put micro-scratches on the paint like other methods might.
