RE: looking for links...not opinions

I just hope you are healthy (wealthy) enough to afford insurance for - "OUT of CANADA" for six months. I know I can't, (and travel too). bbt

RE: Would you recommend a 5th wheel for me?

Lots of great information thus far, thank you all. Is there a reliable guide to RV Parks that identifies the ones that are easy to get in and out of? I'm thinking maybe I can solve most of my problems through a combination of a good driver's ed course and then planning to avoid the RV Parks that are difficult to navigate. Other than entering and leaving the park, when else am I going to encounter potential maneuvering difficulties? I assume you all fuel up at truck stops that are easy-in/easy-out. That really depends on where you are and where do you want to travel to, and by what route. This is a good website for RV parks BUT remember - this IS the internet and not all people agree on what is best. http://www.rvparkreviews.com/ When it comes to fuel - all stations are not created the same. Interstate exits are for the most OK, as are most State highways, off the beaten track is another story altogether. Plan a route - from A to B and then ask here (for instance). My like single - would be a 5th wheel in the 28 ft MAX range - with no front slide. Many newer models seem to have lots of headroom and still - lighter weight. Backing up is still backing up - with any vehicle - Like -"how do you get to Carnagie Hall ?" - answer - PRACTICE - PRACTICE - PRACTICE. A suggestion might be - spend A LOT of time looking, before you buy a vehicle of any type - zero in on what YOU think is the layout for you, then search forums like this for suggestions on your rig, THEN match that with a tow vehicle with the capacity to do the job. Ask a lot of questions, as you are doing - use the internet to look at the manufactuer's units and floor plans - get some idea of what you MIGHT want - then check owners of that mfg. forums for + or - from people that are using those rigs. In other words - spend a LOT-O-TIME looking (at NO cost) before you lay out your hard earned $$. Hope this helps - Happy Motoring :) bbt

RE: Question for Ford 7.3 owners?

My 2000 7.3 is 13 THIS month (in service May 2000) - they are "the bee's knees". At 120 tho. KILOMETERS I had John Wood (Holtville CA.) do a tranny upgrade and chip (he does his own - to his transmisions) Now have 260 tho KILOMETERS - NEVER a tranny problem - HOWEVER my 5er is less weight than yours. Use the Ford AIS - get a WALKER BIG TRUCK MUFFLER (no special exhaust) Get gauges and drive by them. "THEY WILL PRY MY COLD DEAD FINGERS" from this beast. other than that :) they are OK. bbt

RE: Maybe found my diesel.

The late 99 (99.5) has a better tranny cooler. It's an easy change to upgrade those old headlights to the clear (2002). If you have tranny problms John Woods in Holtville CA. will build you a bulletproof one. You will get to LOVE the clickity clack of the 7.3. Check to see if the W.P has been replaced and take care of the coolent (as mentioned). If you aquire this - you will probably never sell it. bbt

RE: Rest stops near Victoria Bc

You COULD TRY to get into West Bay Marina & RV park - it's right across the harbour from the Coho. Have not had a trailer there for years. https://www.westbay.bc.ca/RVPark.aspx bbt

RE: For those that have been there done that ???

Just another thought on making cross country or long RV trips. We don't always take into consideration or have an awarness of the "cumulative" negative effect on our bodies and energy levels after traveling several days in a row. Each day we start driving takes a little more expended energy than the previous day etc etc. unless you can schedule a 2 or 3 day lay over at an RV park to break up your trip. Or to put it another way, "the joy of RVing is in the day to day travels, not in just reaching a destination" or "Stop and smell the roses along the trip". A GREAT tip for anyone planning a long motor trip. For someone that has not driven for a job, many cannot gauge the stress that is put on yourself. Long haul truckers, bus drivers, machinery operators and even traveling salesmen (as I was) are aware of these facts when contemplating a long trip. For instance 6, 7, or 8 hours or more on the road is very tiring to someone not used to this, add heavy traffic, unfarmiliar cities and towns, winding roads and 4/5 hours seem like a lifetime. I have been coast to coast 1/2 dozen times or more and up and down each coast. I use (now) M.S. Sreets PLUS google for my plans and I find that even using the easy routes and trying to take the slowest route will still add 1, or 1-1/2 hours to the time that these programs say you can cover the distance in, so 4 hrs becomes 5 &1/2 and on. Sometimes it is best to pick one, or two major sites you want to see and make that your goal. We just returned this month from our winter home in southern Calf. and it took us 12 days - mind you we stopped in several parks along the Oregon coast, but it was a much easier drive than trying to get back in four days, as we have in the past. Happy Motoring bbt

RE: RVing from Vancouver BC to DisneyLand

OK - I am from Victoria as well, and have done the coast (N. & S. many times).. To catch the 6am Coho you have to be there at 5am, or spend overnight at the terminal. HUMM - early start! By the time you clear customs it will be 8am Then 101 out to I-5, south to Longview/Kelso and west on 30 to Astoria. Nehalem State Parkwould be a GOOD 1st night stop - north of Tilamok - super park. About 6-7 hr drive( 300 mi.) 101 in Aug will be a ZOO south. - Lots of parks BUT lots of traffic, HOWEVER ALL the parks will be on the right(west) side of 101 S. I am thinking MIN. 4/5 days (no stops) to Calif. near Aneheim (for Disney) add a couple of days for the mouse and you are over 1/2 your time. I would forget Sandyeggo and zoo - spend more time on the coast route - do disney, then hit I-5 for back home. When you get into Wash.(coming back) a GOOD RV park is MIDWAY RV Pk. in Centrailia - about 3-1/2 - 4 hrs to Pt Angeles, out 101. happy motoring bbt

RE: Curb jumping options

It is real easy put your truck in 4 wheel drive low range and back right over the curb with ease. This is a bad idea as there is a danger of some cords getting broken inside the tire as all the trailer weight is concentrated in a small area of the tire as the tire climbs over the curb. Down the road on your next trip these broken cords begat a few more broken cords and KABOOM goes the tire, which generally wrecks havoc with the fender well and dents on the side of the camper from flying rubber. There is a danger getting out of bed every morning also. There is always someone with a smart assed comment. So do you what you want. I'm speaking from experience. It took me a few times of backing over a curb before I figured out it was damaging my fivers tires. Now that I have gone to the xps ribbed tires they can take a curb, but most other's get damage. I AM WITH YOU PAL! - (no relation :) bbt

RE: Spotless Wash

I have found the cheapest way for CA water is to use a couple of sprinkles of Calgon in the wash water - will dry without spots. Then whatever polish/wax you like - I believe they still recommend a wax with a high carnuba compound as the best. bbt

Somebody wants my business

We have always liked the town of Florence, on the OR. coast and have been coming, off and on for 10 years or so. The last time we were here - 4 years ago we chanced into Bridgewater Fishhouse & Zebra Bar in old town. I am a fish & chip fan and I thought that they had the best halibut f&c that I have tasted. We are returning to Vancouver Island after spending 2 months in the CA. desert, and we decided to travel 101 back home, as opposed to i-5. Anyway - on with my story - we decided that we would return to The Bridgewater for a meal. We were seated and perusing the menu when a server came to our table and left a 12 piece shrimp cocktail "Compliments of the house" We ordered and enjoyed halibut fish & chips and a shrimp dish, when the bill was presented - it was $XX.75 when I gave in my card they knocked off the 75 cents, and rounded the bill DOWN. This may not be much, BUT it impressed the HECK out of me. Good food - great service - and a couple of bonus's This is NOT a paid commercial - look at my stats BUT - if you are in Florence, or going - give them a try. BBT

RE: Seattle to Disney via (some) coast and back through Yosemite

"Renting Diesel Pusher" from a friend?? - Does it have air brakes? are you certified for air? Towed with a M/H ? Hate to rain on a parade but I think you need to answer a lot of questions BEFORE you get too wrapped up in a trip. bbt

This was how we were doing it. http://webpages.charter.net/jaycocamprs/bike%20rack%202.JPG height=480 width=640 OMG - if I could lift the wife's trike that high, I'd just hold MY bike out the drivers window. ;) bbt

RE: NASCAR & Tony...thoughts?

We seem to have drifted from Denny, Tony and Joey over to Danica on this deal so we will just go on with that. I am an old ex racer as I suspect many of you are also, especially Cloud Dancer and Rocket. My time was done in Supermodifieds and sprints, never in Nascar. I left the sport in early seventies due to severe head, back and hand injuries. While being drivers certainly makes our opinions no more fact than any others it does give us a little different perspective. The only problems that I have with Danica is the attention given her over the male drivers.( interviews given her after a tenth place finish before the winner.) But I do understand the novelty of a female in a testosterone driven sport/business. Auto racing has come a long way since my day when women were not even allowed in the pits. As controversial as it has been I think she is good for the sport/business. Like it or not it is a high dollar business and sponsorship is what keeps the cars going around and she has certainly done her share of putting NASCAR in the headlines. I also don't think it's entirely out the possibility that she could win at Talladega or Daytona. It does take a fair amount of nerve just to push someone down the track at 200 mph or run three wide at that speed so I do give her some credit. Who knows, my crystal ball came from Wal-Mart. I think the answer will be interesting. Well said - as an "olde" stock car jockey from the fifties and a small time sports car racer in the sixties - I feel safe in saying "BIG Bill France created CASHCAR" and I don't say that like its a BAD thing. Tony - well he IS Tony and I think would have done the same thing in the same place. Sorry for Hamlin, I hope he can recover quickley, but a spinal hurt can be REAL bad. Some of ya'all have been in a drivers seat. - gotta look at the replay again - Joey - well 11car DID put him out a week or so ago?? Danica ? Any one can win - heck EVEN Michael Waltrip - so its NOT beyond the relm of possibility, after all it IS CASHCAR. bbt

RE: Towing camper w/o electric brake controller

BINGO - The owner of the trailer HAS a brake control. The borrower (the O.P) does NOT!!! Solution - BUY a controller like the owner of the camper has and install it on your truck. The brakes will then work. bbt

RE: 395

Thanks for the reply`s. In past years we have taken 95 - I 15 then up 160 to Parhump - then back on 95 to Tonapah then 376 - 305 to Winnemucca then north on 95 to 78 and over to 20. 395 would give us a new look at the country - weather should be about the same I would think. bbt

395

Leaving El Centro CA in about 3 weeks - looking for new way north. In (say) 2nd wk. of April how would 395 be from Kramer Junction to say Carson City, Then further north to say 20 in OR. ? I know weather is a maybe - just general highway conditions (lots of hills) and RV Pks, campgrounds. Thanks bbt

RE: Route Suggestions, Laughlin, NV to Portland, Or

Do NOT poo poo 95 N to Tonapaha - fill and go S. to 6 E to 376 - thence N to 50 and Austin - sure you climb to 6000 - but you are already at 3000 - then go N to Battle Mountain - then W to Winnammuca - then N on 95 again - Valleys all the way nice and flat - no trafic. Been doing this for 8/9 years. bbt
