RE: Diluting antifreeze

I usually don't make sarcastic remarks on this forum, but.... If RVers are willing to work so hard to save antifreeze our economy must reallly be in the toilet even worse than I thought. My time is worth a lot more than the time it would take to blow out the old antifreeze & recapture it. In addition, that antifreeze is diluted from mixing with water in the traps & polluted by that same water. As far as saving 1/2 gallon by diluting it in advance it is not worth the risk reward ratio. As another poster said, buy an extra gallon & save what is left over for the next year.
Nah... it's just that most of the 5th wheel owners are old & cheap! :B

RE: Troubles with Bighorn

It will not end until consumers quit shopping solely for price and start demanding quality. The old addage "you get what you pay for" is still true.
Dave
I totally 100% agree. Over and over and over we buy the cheapest products we can find, drive out the quality manufacturers and then complain. You can't have it both ways. You can't have cheap and quality.
Nope... it's all about the manufacturer (or 99% of all businesses) making the largest return on their investment. It is all about the all mighty dollar and their profit margin... or greed. Where have you all been the past year???
Consumers have been shopping for the best price for over 100 years... that has not changed! The companies with their increased profit margin have changed.

RE: Houston, I think we have a WATER problem.

For you people who sanitize your camper do you do the same when you go home to your stick home.
ummmmmm.... my stick home does not sit for months with no water use. The water never sits in a tank unused.

RE: blow out your lines with air and use pink stuff?

Ok well I had to respond cause I'm a little different.
1. Blow out the lines.
2. Run Pink Stuff through everything.
3. Blow pink stuff out and down the drains.
I found that if I left the pink stuff in all winter it would take a long time for the taste to go away. So since its already done the work (Displaced any left over water) I blow it right out. Takes a little longer but I think its worth it.
That's exactly how I do it! See there are two very intelligent people here.:B

RE: Solar Installers in Northeast, East Coast US?

Sorry, no specifics (had mine installed on West Coast) but I'd say the further South you go, the more & better options you'll find. Not as many RV's or as much sunshine in the North.
Plenty of RV's and sunshine here... just the temps are lower. :W

RE: snow load on 5th wheel

27' x 8' x 1' = 216 q.ft (I assume that there was a layer about 1' thick of water, or ice instead of all that snow on the top).
216 x 63 = 13,600 lbs of extra load on the roof, and therefore on those four poor tires. They must have had at least double the allowable load on them,if not more.
No way... you're assuming 1 foot of solid water/ice... I do not believe it.

RE: How much off MSRP?

What is a fair profit?? If fifth wheel msrp was 30,000 and actual cost was 20,000 what wouls a fair profit be so the dealer would still be there for service when needed??? rvtommy
$1K, the most. It is a known fact that auto dealers make most of their profit on service, not auto sales. I wonder if the same holds true for RV dealers?... I would think so.

RE: snow load on 5th wheel

Nothing to worry about. All the fivers & trailers sitting in dealers lots get covered in snow. I never heard of an RV roof caving in due to snow loads.

RE: how long can black water be kept "on board"?

Well, I take the opposite opposite position here. I say, dump it as often as you can flush it as often as you can. If you can't, then get a tote and haul it away. Add enough water so it will flush out. You can eliminate smells for only so long. But think about this and follow this logic.
If you use the toilet in your house, and I mean really use it, and do not flush, how long can "it" sit there before you're driven out of the house because of the smell. Now, add chemical to the toilet bowl and try to cover the odor. How long can you do that?
Your tank is just a holding tank. If you let stuff sit in it, it will build up, stuff will stick, cling, and it will forever be yucky!
At least with the example above with your home bathroom toilet, you can finally flush it down. What do you see now? Right! A really nasty looking toilet! Does it smell pretty now? Nope! Not at all. The same thing is going on in your holding tank.
Remember, your tank is only a holding tank. The only difference between the toilet bowl in your house and the tank in your trailer, is you can close off the tank in your trailer so you can't see it. So, why not just shut the lid on the toilet in your house? How long do you think THAT would fly with the MRS!
Clean it out!
WRONG!

RE: Full Metal Jackrabbit or Retrax?

Have had a Retrax for 5 years . Looks like new even in Florida sun . Zero problems.
I have the Truxedo LoPro rollup soft cover. I am thinking of replacing it with a Retrax. The Truxedo's rails stick into the bed a few inches and keeps me from making a 90 degree turn. The pinbox would hit it before I approach 90 degrees. I think the Retrax has a much smaller rail on each side. Anyone have any detailed pics of their Retrax rails?

RE: The length of the planks that I park the trailer on

I cut mine in half but I have a different routine. I back mine onto 4x6s cut in half then I put jackstands under the frame right behind the wheel and I jack up each wheel one at a time and pulls the boards out. I store mine with the wheels off the ground. Craig
One question... WHY?

RE: The length of the planks that I park the trailer on

Not my first unusual question: I currently carry 2 5' 2x12 planks that I park the trailer on. The missus cannot lift these planks so I am considering cutting each in 1/2 to 2.5'.
Does cutting them in 1/2 increase the likelihood of the plank hitting the belly of the trailer when backing on or pulling off?
Either get the missus to start some weight lifting excercises or lift them yourself. :C
I have seen fivers sitting on four individual boards, one for each tire. No problem. I don't think they need to be 2.5' long. Just bevel the edge for ease of driving up onto them.

RE: 5ver inside

My current fiver and previous trailers always stayed outdoors with no noticable effect on the finish. I always waxed them with a high quality wax at least once a year. Mine are stored at home on my own property so I save $ on storage fees. The truck goes in the garage.

RE: Charging the batteries without using the 50 amp cord.

What is gained from using that gizmo that Gale posted if both sides of the wall plug goes to the same circuit breaker - ie one female recepticle is paralleled to the other one with the bresak off brass coupler that comes on the plug.

RE: Shower Door... Adjustable?

You might consider that it is not a hinge problem but the shower door is out of square. If the door has slipped and went out of square it would look like your door. If this happened to my unit, I would remove the door and bump it on the low side to try to resquare. Just my thought.
I don't think a solid glass door can go out of square. I corrected the problem with a washer as a shim under the bottom hinge. I also removed the upper frame and was able to make an adjustment there.

RE: What are the best-- Best valued tire?

Michelins are NOT the best VALUE if you do not put lots of miles on your rig. There is a difference when it comes to best tire and best value. Michelins are probably the best tire and the best value if you put lots of miles on... but if you are like me, using the 5er less then a dozen times a year, the best valule would be Maxxis. Both of them should be replaced after 5-6 years. Do you want to replace expensive Michelins with lots of tread still left?

RE: Shower Door... Adjustable?

I fixed mine by cutting a notch in a flat washer that fits around bottom pin. I then pried up door with screw driver and slipped the washer in between bottom frame and door. It raised it up enough so that it closes easier.
I think I might try this. Thanks.
I will also look for any twist as Larry stated. Thanks.

RE: Shower Door... Adjustable?

I too am looking for an answer, my Keystone Cougar has the exact same shower and the exact same problem, although not as severe.
When I open the shower door I have to "lift" it a bit to clear the bottom rail.
A cursory examination of the hinges show no way to adjust it.
Thanks
Ron W.
Mine is not severe... it looks severe in the pic. I just have to lift it a tad when closing it otherwise the bottom of the door catches a bit.
