RE: I-20, Ft Worth to Georgia

Vicksburg is worth a stop. The National Park Service does a good job at the civil war battlefield there and there is a nice driving tour of the historic district. There are also several antebellum homes to tour if you're into that. Start at the big visitor's center at the foot of the bridge.

RE: Expandable vs. travel trailers

We had a hybrid for two seasons and finally traded it in because we had trouble keeping it cool during the hot summers here in Texas. Tentage just cant keep in the heating and cooling like hardwalls can. If you only plan to use in during mild weather, its fine.

RE: Winter storage

One alternative is to go to Lowe's, Home Depot, or a nursery and buy a few of the precast concrete squares. Dig these in level with the ground at the spots your tires will be sitting, then park the trailer on these

RE: Do I have a tow package?

I know there was no hitch on the vehicle, but was told it wasn't part of the tow package. There may be a semantic problem here. The term "hitch" is sometimes used to mean the ball that the trailer hooks to. Most vehicles with tow packages dont come with the ball part of the hitch since different trailers require different sizes. What you need to look for is the receiver. This is the part of the hitch bolted or welded to the frame with a square hole sticking out the back. You'll need to purchase a ball and ball mount of the apporpriate size for your trailer. A tow package will also include at lease the basic wiring for trailer lights which may be tucked up out of sight underneath the vehicle. Take a closer look. If your Equinox does not have a receiver or wiring, then its very doubtful that it has a tow package.

RE: Question On Winterizing?

That's how I do mine. However, I'd add another step. Before you start the pump, open your low point drains and all sink and shower faucets. Start the pump and close the low point drain as soon as antifreeze begins to come out. Run inside and close each inside faucet as antifreeze begins to come out. Flush the toilet until antifreeze comes out. Remember to also turn on your outside shower and let it run (both hot and cold) until antifreeze comes out. Then pour a cup or two of antifreeze into each drain for the traps. The only part of the system this might leave unprotected is the line from the city water intake to the pump. Some units have a drain valve on this line or you can just unscrew it from the pump and drain it.

RE: National Forests Vs. State Parks Vs. Private?

Take a look at Corps of Engineers parks. Ditto this. There are several nice ones within a short drive of Dallas. Check out www.recreation.gov and do a search for Texas and Oklahoma. We've stayed at Buncomb Creek, a COE park on Lake Texoma, several times. Facilities tend to be somewhat more primitive than private and state CGs, but they usually arent as crowded and have plenty of room between sites.

RE: Minneapolis to San Diego...she wants waterfalls.

Both Yellowstone and Zion have great waterfalls. Bryce has one or two small ones and I dont remember any in GCNP. The problem is the time of year. By November many park roads have started to close and the falls will likely be down to trickles.

RE: Diesel care and feeding

I add a diesel fuel additive regularly. You can buy this at WalMart or any auto parts store. Its not essential, but I believe I get somewhat better mileage, especially while towing. The products also claim to help dissipate water in the fuel and keep the innards clean.

RE: helping with backing in

My DW and I have been doing this for years. Ditto on the radios. We use a cheap pair of walkie talkies so we dont need eye contact. We started out with the "further left" "further right" thing and that just didnt work. Now, DW's main job is just to yell stop if I'm about to hit anything. Other than that, I dont really need directions. Works for us.

RE: heartlands

Just be sure you have enough tow vehicle to pull it safely. Most of the trailers that cost more and look better-made are also a good bit heavier for the same length and floorplan. Just be sure you know what your limit is and keep an eye on weights as you compare units.

RE: single mom - need advice re: purchasing rv

Sounds like in that price range, you'll be looking for a small used pop-up.

RE: Greenbelt Park, MD

Havent been there, but researched it for my own trip. The reviews on RV Park Reviews are very positive. If you have the NPS Senior Discount Card, I believe camping is half price. Just be aware that there are no hookups.

RE: New to PUP and a few questions.

I dont think the TV itself will have any problems. As far as the hitch goes, you are describing a Class II hitch. Check out the Reese hitch website. They have a chart to help you determine what you need. The tongue weight on a TT should be 10-15% of the trailer's total weight. If you loaded up to the max trailer GVWR of 2995 pounds, you could theoretically have a hitch weight of 15% of that or 450 pounds. To be conservative, you might want to increase to a Class III hitch (500 lb max), but with careful loading, you'll probably be able to stay around 300 pounds. For example, if your fresh water tank is in front of the axles, you can tow with it empty. If it is behind the axles, you can tow full. Some people load up then check their tongue weight using regular bathroom scales. This could help you decide whether a new hich will be needed.

RE: Black Tank back-up problems, Help Please

What is the "tornado" flush?? It is a spray nozzle located inside the black tank. You connect a hose to it and use it to flush out the inside of the tank, making cleaning much easier and backflushing usually unnecessary. You can buy a kit and install this yourself (most any RV parts place has them), or many fivers come with them installed at the factory. If your trailer has two water input locations, the second is for the tornado and should be labelled. IMHO the tornado is well worth the money and if used regularly, will prevent problems from happening.

RE: Hyde Memorial State Park, Santa Fe

I've driven by Hyde and I'd suggest you read the reviews on RV Park Reviews. They give a pretty fair description. From what I saw of it, it is really just a few rough sites on the side of the road.

RE: 12 V socket problem

Jayco and others use a standard 1/4 inch phone jack for 12volts. Is this what you're describing? I made an adapter using a female cigarette lighter plug wired to a male 1/4 inch jack (Radio Shack). Just be sure you maintain the correct polarity. On both types, positive is on the tip.

RE: Tyre Pressures

Recommendations vary with the truck make and model. Check your owner's manual or call the dealer. My Dodge has two different sets of recommended pressures, one for light loads and one for heavy loads. I run the light load pressure around town and increase to the heavy load when towing. For my truck, the light load pressure on the rear is 40lbs the heavy is 70lbs.

RE: Deep Cycle Battery Question

Now might be a good time to invest in a Smart Charger that will charge at the best rate, taper the charge, then shut itself off when finished. These are not very expensive and may well extend the life of your battery. I got mine at WalMart.

RE: Dumb question alert!!!!

However, you might want to wait until you need it before you buy. We've been camping in trailers nearly 30 years--all over the U.S., and I've yet to have a situation where I had to have a 50amp-30amp connector. I think you'll find this situation mainly at resort-type places where they cater mostly to big rigs. Those are not our cup of tea, so we've never had the problem. Most RV parks today offer either only 30amp service, or have a post with both 50 and 30 amp outlets. If a site is advertised as 50amp, it usually means it has both 50 and 30 amp outlets. A few older places still only have 20amp (regular houshold plug). You'll be more likely to need a 20-30amp adapter, which is much cheaper.
