RE: What About The USD cheque?

Little Kopit...thanks for the reply. I have already registered and paid the RIV. I know GST is payable at the border. However, I was wondering what the GST would be based on since I am trading the dealer more than he is selling me. Anyone done that?

RE: What About The USD cheque?

Thanks for the responses Orion....I know it does sound strange but we have known this person for a few years and have had other dealings with him (he is a bona fide small mortgage company) and he suggested removing the lien to make it easier for the transaction (we have trusted him in the past as well). Even though the money will be turned over, I am concerned it will be held on him, so I have taken sue t.'s advice....... sue t.....i have sent an email to the dealer asking him to give us the balance in either a money order or bank draft. Thanks for the suggestion! I am still wondering about the tax implications on the cash part of the transaction, if any, re crossing the border. I would imagine I have to pay tax on the purchase of the Class A. The way I see it, I have already paid tax on the cash part of the deal when I first purchased the 5th..and since i am turning over the money to the lien holder anyway.....the cash part of the deal should not be an issue with the border. Does anyone know if my thinking on this is correct?

What About The USD cheque?

Has anyone traded in their RV for a less expensive RV in the U.S. and then imported to Canada? We have made a deal, with a dealer, to trade in our 5th wheel for a Class A PLUS a cheque made out to us in USD. The cheque is to cover our lien on the 5th, which the mortgage holder has already released in advance so as not to 'complicate' things at the dealer (he says he trusts us to give him the cheque on our return!) :) We know we have to pay taxes on the purchase of the Class A at the border, plus other fees. But...what about the cheque? The difference is on the bill of sale from the dealer. Anyone done this type of transaction before? We are scheduled to make the exchange this coming Saturday.

RE: Requirements for Importing older Mh into Canada

We just made a verbal deal today with a dealer in U.S. He is taking our 5th as a trade. Since our 5th is worth more, dealer will pay our lien off with the balance. The dealer has offered to bring the 'new' RV to the border for us so that we do not have to pay tax in the U.S. Is this a good idea (do like the tax savings)? I would guess I would need an Ontario temporary plate and insurance with me. Anything else? It is a 1997 and I certainly could not do any better in Canada...have been looking since March\09.

RE: An Honest RV Dealer?

Thanks so much for the responses to my post. We are in the process of 'checking things out' right now, using the info gained here. I have also been informed by a private message that it is ok to mention the name of a dealer and ask if anyone has had any dealings with them. So here goes. The dealer is H.W. Motorhomes in Michigan. Any comments? Thanks.

An Honest RV Dealer?

I have noticed that forum members seem to buy RV's far from home. We are just outside of Toronto, Ontario and have not found a decent older much loved Class A anywhere around here. Through the RVT we found a dealer in Michigan who has what appears to be the 'perfect one', but we are very nervous about buying from a dealer we do not know anything about. What precautions should we take? Is there any way to 'check out' a dealer in the U.S.A. before making the trip there?

RE: Recommendation for Cold Weather 5th Wheel

Hello Make sure you look at KZ's Escalade! FYI We have all the specs (re insulation etc.) listed on RVT, because unfortunately, we are selling our Escalade. Here is the link if you would like to see. 2007 KZ ESCALADE We spent last winter just outside Toronto, Canada and part of the winter before in the Escalade....we had absolutely no problems..."warm as toast", no cold spots or wind coming through anywhere! (We are only selling because husband is having difficulties 'hitching' etc. and are going to purchase a Class A.)

RE: Ferry from PEI to Caribou, NS

We took the ferry from NS to PEI last month. Had our kitten in a carry case. My daughter had her cat in its' carry case. We stayed on the open deck with them and no problem. The officers did see us and did not say anything. Out of courtesy to other passengers we did not and would not take the carry case inside...they serve food etc. there. With this weather, perhaps you would be better leaving your pet in the RV though. We take the ferry over (no charge) and the bridge back as it is much more expensive to take the ferry. However, the ride on the ferry, we feel, is certainly worth doing... at least once! Have a good trip whatever way you go.

Gulfstream Scenic Cruiser?

Does anyone have a Gulfstream Scenic Cruiser...year 1998? We have been negotiating with a private individual in another Province for their Gulfstream. I searched the internet to find a similar unit and it seems theirs is the only 1998 anywhere! Found 1997's and below and 1999's and newer....but no 1998. Nada acknowledges that 1998 existed. It is a 38 foot diesel that they are selling. Does no one else want to sell a 1998 or have they gone the way of the dinosaurs? :h

RE: Air brakes in Canada

I understand in Ontario you need a 'Z' endorsement to operate a vehicle with air brakes but..... I found the web site a little confusing. Is it just a written test or do you have to take a driving test etc? Also, do you have to take a course at the community college before going for the test or can you just make an appointment and take the test? Thanks for any clarifications.

Buying Used in another Province

We want to buy a Class A in New Brunswick. We live in Ontario. I have searched the internet regarding registering, license, paying taxes etc. and it is all very confusing. Has anyone done this? Can the vehicle keep it's NB license? Is it as complicated as bringing from the USA? What about the Drive Clean? (It is a 1998) All the sites just refer to vehicle or snowmobiles etc. Are there separate instructions for RV's? Does anyone know where to find the info? I phoned a couple of numbers and after being on hold forever, neither person could tell me the rules regarding RVs....very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated as we love this unit and really want to pick it up before the snow hits here :-)

RE: Canadian Full-timers

We have been full timing since 2006. During the summers we have travelled North & Southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Spent the winters "down south" until last year. Husband had 'an offer he couldn't refuse' so we had to winter just outside Toronto. Now that was an experience....some good, some bad, but a definite learning experience!!! Even if we had to winter again...we would not give up our full time lifestyle.

RE: Should I Be a Tattletale?

Interesting variety of opinions. First off, the trailer is right next to ours...impossible not to see as they pulled in and set up. Hearing the banging we looked up and saw the unloading and storing under their trailer. Since we have been in this site before, we know that their firepit will often blow in our direction. This has never been a problem for us in the past. We are concerned about the diseased wood (it was barked wood) but frankly were more concerned about the 'finished' wooden pieces. We decided to wait and see if they were indeed going to burn it. The very next day they pulled in with another load in the pickup (hidden by a tarp) and proceeded to quickly unload large pieces of drawers, cabinets etc., breaking them up in small pieces and shoving them under the trailer. We were sitting outside at the time and they seemed oblivious to us...just working away. We decided to ask them about it, very friendly-like. :) They very nicely told us that they were renovating another trailer somewhere else and were bringing all the old pieces here to burn. We called the camp office. They sent over security who informed them they could not burn the 'renovating wood' and that it was to be removed and disposed of elsewhere. Security told us that they were very nice about it and said no problem. That night the smell from their campfire made us go inside and close up everything. Guess what they were burning? We called the camp office in the morning and security came again, saw the remnants in the pit and warned them again. Tonight they brought in another load of 'finished' wood and shoved it under their trailer. Think they are 'just storing it'? Doubt it! Tomorrow I will call the camp office again. Enough is enough!

Should I Be a Tattletale?

We are at a campground for the summer season. At the entrance it has a huge sign saying you are not allowed to bring in firewood of your own. A small trailer just parked two sites over and proceeded to unload the pick-up truck full of firewood and large pieces of what appears to be old cupboard (varnished) doors and stuff it under their trailer....obviously for burning later. Would you tell the office? We do not like to make enemies but....

RE: Question about buying a used RV in Ontario Canada

We have never and would never pay in full until we have checked the unit out totally. In the past we have found awnings missing, slide covers not on, and many other 'little items' not hooked up etc. etc. on brand new top of the line units. We have never heard of any dealer asking for full payment ahead of the inspection (maybe they need the cash flow in these hard times!?) No full payment until you are satisfied is my advice. Once they have your money.....

RE: Liens on Used Unit?

You only need the chassis recall documents not the coach ie example : spartan or fleetwood. I have had this clarified directly from riv canada last week. Phone them if you are unsure. Thank you...this is getting less complicated due to great forum members. :B
