Full Timers in Ontario

Any full timers spending the summer in Ontario? If so, any recommendations for parks for retirees on fixed incomes?

RE: Cell Phones

We use Wind in Ontario...put it on hold for 6 months and use Tmobile in the U.S. for the 6 months we are there. Have one phone with internet in each country and use it as a hot spot for our computers as well. We also have another phone in each country as a phone only. As for the phones, we simply change the sim card to the phones when we cross the border and then activate Wind or Tmobile depending on the direction travelling.

RE: Gulf Coast Fla. Recommendations

If you call the beaches at Pennekamp "not bad", you evidently have never been to the beaches on the west or east coast of Florida! I love the Keys for what they offer me, and like you spend four months there hop scotching back and forth between the state parks, but for anyone who has been to beaches that are miles and miles long, with pure sugar like sand several hundred feet between the dunes and the water line, the Keys can't come close to that. I would never advertise the Keys for their beaches jack L fyi been on beaches on both coasts many times. That said, you simply cannot compare the beaches anywhere in the Keys with beaches on the Gulf for example, just as I wouldn't compare the Gulf beaches with say the beaches in Tanzania. Entirely different categories, but all have their attractions. Just trying to give the op a personal opinion about the Keys which I love.

RE: Gulf Coast Fla. Recommendations

Been in Keys since December (still here now)staying totally at State Parks. Been coming to Homestead and the Keys for 8 years and for us...there is no place like the Keys! How far in advance do you book to be able to stay in state parks? Is there a time limit on how long you can stay at one? Thanx 14 days without leaving for a day/night we never have booked ahead...just watch for cancellations...but you have to monitor reserve america (internet) to catch spots if you do it that way.

RE: Gulf Coast Fla. Recommendations

That is a mighty big area. We are snow birds that come to the Keys for four months. Unless you are a boater, a paddler or a fishermen I would cross the Keys off, unless you just want to hang out in the sun with the no-seeums. the beaches here are almost non-existant, except small private ones at the motels. Unless you are a nature lover, I would cross off from south of Naples to Homestead That leaves just from Sarasota to Naples--Good luck Jack L Been in Keys since December (still here now)staying totally at State Parks. Only problem with no-seeums was at Bahia Honda. Were there for 3 weeks, at separate times, waterfront, and still were able to enjoy the site, fabulous sunsets, biking, walking on beach and in water, swimming. During last 4 months stayed at Long Key (all waterfront) and Curry Hammock, at various times, no no-seemum problems at all. We are at Curry now and going to Long Key for a week again, then to John Pennekamp. No problems here. Stayed at Homestead (Larry & Penny park) in Nov & part of Dec...are returning in April...but have stayed there in Jan.&Feb. before. The park has great biking and a pool and a few events held, as well as very friendly people, many who stay the whole winter. IMO No-seeums are usually the worst at John Pennekamp, but the campground and location outweighs the bug problem. Some great public beaches in Marathon and at Bahia Honda and the beaches at Pennekamp are not bad. ps have also stayed at private campgrounds in the Keys and have not been impressed enough with their facilities in comparison to their price...just my opinion for what it is worth. Been coming to Homestead and the Keys for 8 years and for us...there is no place like the Keys!

RE: Help?No overdrive!

LONG POST Just before this problem started to happen we lost our fuel pump. We were on a bridge in the central Keys. Took 5+ hours for a tow truck to come from Miami. He spent over 4 hours hammering and banging under the RV, on the side of the road in the dark, trying to drop the drive shaft. He finally said he had to put it back up because he couldn't get it totally down. Towed us at a "hardly moving" speed up to Key Largo (police even pulled him over for going too slow):( Had pump replaced. Went back to Marathon, turned into drive of campground, RV died....we were stuck again...pump was defective. Good Sam got an extremely large tow truck to come from Key West...long story short...he towed it (not lowering the shaft as it was only going about quarter of a mile into the campground) then he lowered it...but not enough....over $10,000 damage. (After a long battle, their insurance paid it all.) Meanwhile, the first mechanic came, dropped the drive shaft, towed it to Key Largo. Replaced fuel pump. We had all accident repairs done and headed for Canada...that is when the RV started this strange behaviour. We assumed it was the brakes. So,we had the brakes done. But on our way back to Florida now we have the same problem (as I explained in first post). We dislike driving at night, but we cannot take a chance during the day of getting in traffic stop and go. If we had known the problem was still with us, we would not have left for Florida. After this long post, we are wondering if anyone thinks, or has an explanation for the problem being because of the drive shaft not being lowered before towing. Any thoughts would be appreciated as we just have to get this fixed asap.

RE: Help?No overdrive!

Is your ABS trouble light on? If it is, the ECM will refuse to engage overdrive. no ABS

RE: Help?No overdrive!

Even though there is no engine check light on, go buy an O'reilly or Autozone parts store and have the computer checked for codes. Your RPM and mileage doesn't appear to be effected by hanging brakes. Only other brake hanging could be parking brake. Do you know if you have a parking brake in your drums or on the driveline? Think the parking brake is somehow connected to the transmission?? when had transmission rebuilt 2 years ago, seem to remember mechanic saying that.

RE: Help?No overdrive!

Is that a 1996 P30 Chassis? p30 not sure of chassis year
rvcruiser 11/18/12 07:18pm Class A Motorhomes
RE: Help?No overdrive!

Sounds like your brakes are hanging up to the point that the ECM will not allow the transmission to go into overdrive. What kind of RPMs are showing? Are you using lots of fuel? Does your rig have drum or disc brakes on the rear? Were the calipers replaced? What about the rubber hoses? They could be collapsed causing the fluid not to return to master cylinder. average 2270 @ 65mph seems good fuel drum calipers, rubber hoses replaced

RE: HELP,WER'E BEING INVADED!

We are fulltimers. We arrived back in Toronto Ontario May 17/12 from Florida Keys. All summer two types of Florida ants kept periodically showing up..no matter what we did. Sadly...two weeks ago after a freezing night, they disappeared. We are leaving this Sunday to replenish our supply.:B

OHIP & deductible for travel ins.

What do any experienced snowbirds have for a deductible on their travel insurance. We were thinking of putting $1000 deductible and if anything should happen we could claim some back from OHIP. Is this possible? We have read this on another site and were wondering if it was true or if anyone had experience with this.

Exception to 'Formula Rule'?

Last year we left Canada Dec.5th to spend the winter in the U.S. and our return to Canada was to be on April 15th. We would like to leave in November this year which would be fine except for the fact that our return on April 15th was delayed due to an accident and the ensuing nightmare (another story). This unfortunately had us returning to Canada on May 29th. We are aware of the formula for Canadians to stay in the U.S.A. but were wondering if any exception to the 'rule' can be made due to our circumstances. Does anyone have any info or know of any place we could get this information? We are now living full time in our Class A and it is not a winter unit. Also, the cost of wintering (even for 2 months) would be prohibitive now to us as my husband lost his job (due to not returning on time)and are now solely on pension. We did spend one winter in Canada a couple of years ago, but it was in a 5th wheel that was a winter unit and that was not something we wish to repeat.:(
