RE: Helpful vendors or scam artists?

Glad I read this post. I will be going to Williams, AZ in two months (Grand Canyon) I will make sure to refuel before I get close to that area. Like I said I can't prove whether I was scammed or not. That's why I hesitated to post about it. We didn't have any trouble at the Chevron north of I40 and I think there were gas stations on the way up to the Grand Canyon in Valle and Tusayan but I'm not positive.

RE: California- San Diego and up. cheap/boondocking places

I can't speak for the rest of the State, but the 101/1 area north of Ukiah has no free camping that I could find on trips the last two years. Even sleeping overnight in rest areas is prohibited! There are some (relatively cheap) oceanside roughcamping areas on Hwy 1 north of Fort Bragg. Decent access, no amenities, first come first served, and as I recall about $25.00 a night. Wouldn't call it camping but we overnighted at the Bear River casino just south of Eureka last year.

RE: Helpful vendors or scam artists?

Two years ago after eating at the Mcdonalds in Williams Arizona I pulled across the street to fill up at the Mobil station. While I was filling up I noticed a man cleaning the pumps faces with windex. When he got to the outside pump that I was fueling at he told me that it looked like one of my tires on my MH was low in air and offered to check it for me. Being suspicious I declined and told him that I would pull across the street and check it myself after fueling as I religiously check my tires and none had shown low before. He told me that it wouldn't take long at all because he owned the Firestone tire shop not 15 feet from where I was parked and I could just pull up after fueling and he would check it for free. So I thought what the heck he seems like he's just trying to help and I figured I would watch him like a hawk. After I moved forward he had another guy come out of the shop to check my outside dual on the left side and said he would check the other side while I was there. So now I found myself trying to watch both sides at the same time. He tells me that he was wrong that all the tires were ok inflation wise but one of them had a screw in it and he would fix it for me if I wished. Still not knowing whether I was being scammed after I saw that there was indeed a screw in it I reluctantly told him he could fix it figuring the most he would get out of me was a flat repair. After unmounting the tire he told me that the hole was in a bad spot and he may have to replace the tire. At this point I asked to see the screw that was in it. He went back to the dismounting machine and came back with a screw that wasn'nt even 1/4" long. I told him I was surprised that a screw that short would even get through the tread and he told me that it was right where the sidewall and tread came together so it was thin there. At this point I started purposely acting suspisious and agitated and assured him that I was confident that his patch would work. I think he knew by now that he had better back off a bit. After he patched it he told me that he had checked his stock and din't have my tire size anyway (patch has held for the last 15000 miles). He then charged me $30.00 for a flat repair and when I tried to pay with a credit card he told me that he didn't take cards. When I asked him how all the truckers paid when he took his service truck on the hiway he told me that all the truckers had purchase orders with them for occasions like that. I went away from there almost positive that I had been scammed but could not prove it and therefore never posted about it before but when I saw this post about the Mobil station I felt I had to post to maybe help someone else out. By the way before I drove out he let me know that my shocks looked bottomed out and should probably be replaced. A couple of weeks ago we were in Williams needing gas and went to the Chevron across the hiway and paid more just to avoid that area all together.

RE: Auto Transfer Switch

We don't have an automatic transfer switch but it's not a big deal. When I unplug from shore power and push the power cord back into it's travelling position I just plug it into the generator extension box that's built right into where the cord stores. Seems like one less thing to break to me.

RE: Oven Igniter

Here's a thread that talks about adding igniters to stovetops as well as ovens http://www.rv.net/FORUM/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/24521274.cfm. I did it and it works alot better than getting on my knees to start the pilot light.

If you have an outside radio make sure that it's off. Also the antenna booster can draw things down.

RE: Las Vegas nevada law

Quote: "Non-Residents Certain non-residents also must register their vehicles in Nevada. You must register your vehicle here: •if your vehicle is operated in Nevada for more than 30 days in a calendar year •if you engage in a trade, profession or occupation or accept gainful employment in Nevada •if you enroll your children in a public school in Nevada •if you furnish a vehicle to a Nevada resident for continuous use here Exemptions There are some exemptions. You are not required to register your vehicle here if you are: •on active duty in the military service of the United States •an out-of-state student •a registered student at a college or university located outside Nevada and in the state for a period of not more than 6 months to participate in a work-study program for which you earn academic credits from the college or university •a migrant or seasonal farm worker •a border state employee (commute into Nevada for employment within 35 miles of the border)" So does this mean that if someone is doing a tradeshow or craft show in Nevada and selling products you are "engaged in a trade, profession or occupation or accept gainful employment in Nevada" and therefore subject to a $100.00 fine?

RE: 6.0 stalled at highway speeds. Need urgent help!

I believe you have two seperate problems, overheating and the stalling correct? From your post's stalling is always at Idle, never a code, I would lean towards a Idle Air control valve. Overheating, from your description, look for the thermostat switch that controls the fan, not a Chevy guy so I have no idea where it is. Good Luck with the search, they can be a bit-- sometimes. Keith Hi, Thanks for the info. Yes I have two problems. I mentioned the overheating problem in case it might have something to do with my stalling problem. I will check my Idle Air control valve when I get home. I don't think there is a switch for the for fan as it works using a bimetal strip on the fan itself that heats up and engages the fan clutch. I already changed the fan clutch last year to no avail. Tommorow I will be driving the 750 miles home and will see if my problem arises again. Thanks again, Jeff.

RE: 6.0 stalled at highway speeds. Need urgent help!

Same symptoms as my Ford F-250, there was a problem with the crankshaft positioning switch. It was easy to change and no more problems. Thanks, I ran on to that about another Ford on another site but haven't heard whether it's a possible problem on the Chevy's or not. Did it just mount on the side of then block or did you have to take off the timing cover? Thanks, Jeff.

RE: 6.0 stalled at highway speeds. Need urgent help!

You might stop by an Oreilly's Auto parts and have them check for codes which they'll do for free. By law, in California, only repair shops can read the codes from your ECU. Buy the device and check it yourself. I guess no shade tree mechanics there, huh? I have an Ultra Guage installed and it didn't throw any codes.

RE: 6.0 stalled at highway speeds. Need urgent help!

Just an update. Was able to travel the 150 miles to my destination this morning which included a 3000' pull out of Salt Lake City with no problems except the overheating that I get while pulling grades. Have been trying for over a year to solve the overheating problem including replaceing the thermostat, fan clutch, flushing the radiator and thouroughly cleaning the radiator and ac condensor. I have been monitoring the fan and it doesn't turn on until above 226 degrees and then it starts cooling the engine down but by that time everything is real hot. Was wondering if a radiator blocked in the center of the core would cause the fan clutch turn on late like that. Have been thinking about replacing the radiator but that's a lot of money to just throw at a problem on a hunch. But back to the shutdown problem. It will probably raise it's head on my 750 mile trip home. Will try monitoring my fuel pressure if my ultraguage supports it. Thanks again to all for throwing ideas at me. They are all appreciated, Jeff.

RE: 6.0 stalled at highway speeds. Need urgent help!

Just did a little research on vapor lock and found this. Does any of this look like it fits your situation ? "The fuel can vaporize due to being heated by the engine, by the local climate or due to a lower boiling point at high altitude. In regions where higher volatility fuels are used during the winter to improve the starting of the engine, the use of "winter" fuels during the summer can cause vapor lock to occur more readily." Were you at high altutude ? Maybe bought some 'old' winter gas somewhere ? I was kind of wondering if it could be vapor lock but wasn't sure if newer engines did it or not. Was at about 6000 feet and everything was on the hot side.

RE: 6.0 stalled at highway speeds. Need urgent help!

Just an update. I waited until the weather got cooler and drove another 120 miles with no problems going up or down grades. Floored a few of them (which I don't normally do) to try to make the problem appear again but it ran great. Bought a fuel filter and will put it on when I get an opportunity. Still not sure what caused the problem. Thanks again to everbody for all the help so far, Jeff.

RE: 6.0 stalled at highway speeds. Need urgent help!

I don`t see it being a fuel pressure issue, considering it is probably at full throttle going up a hill. I think the issue may be the Idle Air Control Motor (IAC). if it is dirty the engine will die because it can`t get a good idle. Actually what year is it? it may or may not have an IAC depending on the year. it could be drive by wire with an electronically controlled throttle body. either way if it shuts down as if you turn the key off that sounds like an ignition issue. a fuel issue it will sputter and die out with lack of power. then again I`m not there with the MH in front of me so I could be way off here! Good luck! and I hope you get to where you are going. hopefully it is something simple! Thanks for responding. It didn't sputter at all going up the hill just died floating downhill. The year is 2004. Also forgot to mention that I have an ultraguage connected and it didn't throw any codes either time.

6.0 stalled at highway speeds. Need urgent help!

Hi, I am hoping that someone might be able to help me with this problem. I have a class C motorhome with a chevy 6.0 in it, towing a 10' cargo trailer and it has stalled on me today twice at highway speeds. I am about 500 miles from home and was about '25 miles west of Elko Nevada on highway 80 and had just topped a hill. I was letting it drift down the other side in 3rd gear and when I strated to give it a little gas realized the the engine had stalled. The temperature is in the 90's and my water temp had got up to about 215 degrees as it always does on such pulls. I don't have a transmission guage. After pulling over on the shoulder I tried to start it and it started right up with everything seeming normal. I went about 1-2 miles down the hill and it quit again, just as if I had shut the key off. This time I was able to coast down an off ramp. It started right up again and I checked the tranny fluid and the oil both were normal. I shut off the engine and waited for an hour and was able to drive it another 23 miles to my current location(a Walmart in Elko Nevada). I had just over 1/4 of gas in the tank when all this happened. I still have another 250 miles to go to get to my destination and I have to be there by tommorow afternoon. Hoping someone has some ideas. Thanks, Jeff.

RE: Chevrolet Based Class C

To be honest, mileage wasn't even part of my calculation. It's an RV... the mileage sucks no matter what. There are no truer words than that. :) People seem to be so hung up about gas mileage you'd think they would just drive a Prius and sleep in a tent. Well in my case gas mileage played a small role in deciding which unit to buy. I use our Chevy base class C RV for business and get between 10.5 and 11 mpg pulling a 3000# cargo trailer. I drive about 20000 miles per year which means that I use about 1800 gallons of gas per year. At say 3.70 per gallon that's $6600.00 per year on gas. If I was getting 10% less mileage on a Ford base that would be about $660.00 less im my pocket at the end of the year. This may not seem like alot of money to some folks but for us it is a huge chunk of change. With our F-150 that we used to pull with I was getting 10mpg. tops. Saving money on hotel rooms was a much larger factor on our decision to buy a motorhome but the gas does figure into it also.
