RE: new versus used

I bought used. It is a decision that each individual must make on their own. Alot of factors go into it. You must factor in how handy are you, how deep is your pocket book, dealer or private seller?
For me I enjoy going out and modding the TT. Fixing things on it. It is therapy for me. Good luck on your purchase, John

RE: towing mirrors

Unfortunately with an 05 Expedition you don't have a lot of choices. The McKesh are good and CW sells a set that look alot like the McKesh. Check Ebay or Craigslist have seen used McKesh on there before. Good luck, John

3year owner of a refurbished Ultra-Fab unit here. Bought off Ebay, no problems. Very satisfied, and I would buy again.

RE: F250 5.4L - Daily driver/TV

So far the 5.4L feels like it will be adequate but the throttle doesn't ramp up quick. :B
Hannibal, first congrats on the new truck. If you can't get used to the throttle response one thing you might try is a custom tuner. I like to browse the V10 forum over on the Ford Truck Enthusiast web site. There is a sponsor, Mike from (5 Star Tuning?) that is doing some good things with the new V10 Super duty's. Reports say his tunes really wakeup the trucks as far a throttle response. While I don't have one of his tuners, its on my Christmas wish list. Anyway it sounds like your expectations for towing with your truck are all within reason. Good luck with your truck and to the OP I think an 05'/06' would do just fine with your TT. Fuel mileage whether towing or not is very subjective to the user's driving style. But I would expect 11-13 city and 15-17 hwy. Merry Christmas to all, John

RE: New towing strategy

I have a similar setup as the OP, only I lucked out and got a used Excursion with the factory 4.30's. I tow at 62-63 and found I could get better fuel mileage not using the cruise. But my average is still only about 7.5+ mpg. As far as slowing down that is going to get you the most benefit mpg wise.
I believe the hitch is the same on all the Excursions the only difference is the mounting bolts. I think just changing those would make a difference.

RE: Buying a truck to haul about 10500 lb. 5th wheel

If you are buying a new or 2-3 year old truck consider a F350 Ford.
Equipped with the V10, 5 speed auto (torkshift) and 4:30 axle ratio in the single rear wheel configuration Ford gives it the same GCWR rating (23,000lbs.) as the Diesel version. The F250 and F350 ride is virtually the same and new is only about $600 more for the F350. If your choice is used look for either F250 or F350 2005 or newer but try to find one with the 4:30 axle ratio. That ratio is best with the V10 for heavier loads. The GCWR of 23000lbs applies to both the F250 & F350 but The F350 will have a higher payload rating.

RE: Am i too big?

I don,t mean to get people heated over my question , but with my limited knowledge of towing it seems it may be to much for the truck and is why i posted in the first place . Got some great responses and will see a dealer about sway control or maybe just get a smaller trailer to be sure. Thanks to all for the replies ....:)
Use the forums to increase that "limited knowledge of towing". Knowing what to ask for is half the battle. You have a good start with all the replies here. Good luck, John

RE: Water pump won't prime for winterizing....AGAIN!

you might try pouring some antifreeze down the hose to the pump first then stick the hose in the antifreeze jug.

RE: is the EAZ-Lift system compatible with the dual cam

To the OP, I my be mistaken but I believe the original Dual Cam set is no longer available. That is what I was told by a local hitch dealer here.

RE: Help me understand the numbers...

The "big V8" from Ford isn't available in the Excursion since the Excursion isn't made any more. You must be thinking of the Expedition EL. And yes I believe it will be made available in the Expedition.

RE: What kind of chairs do you use for outdoor seating?

We have the directors chairs from Sam's club. Have had them about 3 years now and they are still in excellent condition. Picked up a couple of the recliners from Cabela's on line store this year for about $30 apiece. They were in the Bargain Cave section and were factory seconds. Nothing I can find wrong with them. Had them delivered to our local store and picked them up there, no shipping charge that way. They are very comfy but a little heavy to carry. Still like them though.

RE: Help me understand the numbers...

Definitely look at the 3/4 or 1 ton vans if you want new. Is this going to be a daily driver or a dedicated TV? How big are the kids? Need more info to help you out.

RE: Mom's homemade vegetable soup

Have you ever tried fresh vegetables?
Oh yes! I made it today with fresh veggies. But I screwed up on the recipe. My wife doesn't like it as spicy as I do. I followed the original recipe which calls for 2 tbs. of chili powder and 1 table spoon of round black pepper. I forgot to cut these in half, so tomorrow I will be adding more veggie juice and some of the other veggies to try to tone it down.:( I think its great like it is but its too hot for her taste, so I'll fix it. I can always add something to my bowl. And I went back and edited the recipe in the previous post. Hope you all enjoy this as much as we do. John

Mom's homemade vegetable soup

This Thanksgiving with the kids occupied the wife and I figured we would skip the turkey dinner this year. Thought I would share my favorite recipe that Mom taught me to make. I made sure she shared this with me before she passed away about 10 years ago. This make alot and to be honest I like it better the second day! The wife and I will eat on this for a week as long as none of the family finds out I made it. Enjoy!
MOM’S HOMEMADE VEGETABLE SOUP
Use a 12-quart or larger pan.
Add bullion cubes and enough water to cover meat.
Simmer stew meat and all raw veggies until thoroughly cooked.
Open and drain all canned goods then add to pan.
After all ingredients are in the pan, season to taste.
Lastly add 2-3 handfuls of elbow macaroni.
When pasta is done enjoy.
2-3 lbs. stew meat 1 large onion
1/2 head of cabbage 2 cans of Red Kidney beans
2 cans sliced carrots (or 3-4 fresh carrots peeled and sliced)
2 cans diced tomatoes 2 cans cut green beans
4 cans sliced potatoes (or 4-6 medium sized potatoes peeled and sliced
2 cans cut green beans 1 can pinto beans
1 can Great Northern beans 1 can whole kernel corn
1 can green peas 1 can 46 oz vegetable juice (or V8 juice)
2 8oz cans tomato sauce 1 can cut okra (to remember Mom by)
2 table spoons garlic powder 1-2 table spoons chili powder (to taste)
1/2 table spoon ground black pepper 3-4 beef bullion cubes
2-3 handfuls elbow macaroni
This make alot! The pot I use is 11 1/2 inch diameter and 7 1/4 inches tall if this helps. And it is full to the brim!

RE: replacement dinette seat cushions

One of the places will wrap it in a polyester,(Disco clothes remember?)wrap and it'll slide right in and is s'posed to be more comfortable..I've got to get this done before we head for San Diego next month for Christmas..Four years on that cheap foam cushion they put into those things and I'm basically sitting on the wood..I have rotated them about every-other trip too,so it's not as if they get too much wear on them.
The other option is to put some memory foam under them.I got a 4" mattress, actually about 3",for the bed in the house and the DW didn't like it so we went back to a 2" and so I can cut that up and slide it under the cushion, but that's kinda messy looking and temporary. The 4" memory foam is too thin for the cushion bag and so won't work.It takes a 5" thickness or two 2" pads to make four of regular foam..
Bigdog, you can use the memory foam and just add either batting or foam to it to achieve the desired thickness. If its 3 inches thick then add a 1 inch piece to each side or use a single 2 inch thick piece. Also wrapping the foam in batting works well. A trick the wife uses to insert the foam in cushions, is to wrap with plastic wrap or something similar to make it slicker for the cover to slide over. You can then leave it on the foam you won't notice it and it will provide some protection to the foam. Good luck, John
