RE: Hwy 2 across Southern Iowa

That stretch of highway is one of the prettiest in Iowa! Beautiful rolling hills, green pastures, picturesque small towns.

Good place to camp with motorcycles?

Hubby and I are looking for a spot to camp in the midwest next April that would be great for riding our motorcycles. Can anyone suggest a campground that would have scenic roads nearby for riding? We want full hookups.

RE: The economy is affecting parks!

Wish we had empty campsites around here! Our local state park is booked solid every weekend from April through October. It's not possible to be spontaneous and decide on Thursday you'd like to camp that weekend. The nonreservable sites fill up by midweek, and I just make a reservation for a weekend in October, and got one of the last available spots! Maybe people are just staying closer to home?

Disney in DC?

On our recent trip to Washington, DC, I noticed that the sculpture "The Awakening" was no longer at Hayn's Point. Our bus driver said it had been moved to an area north of the district, where Disney had recently purchased land to build a new resort? Does anyone have any more more information on this? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Disney as a vacation destination, but I don't think the founding fathers had a theme park in mind when designing our nation's capital!

RE: Headed to Cherry Hill this saturday

We were in DC at the beginning of the month and spent a delightful hour at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. It's across the street from the National Archives. Besides the fun and interesting outdoor sculptures, there is a wonderful pond and fountain where you can sit on the side and dip your feet in, and a cafe that sells pink lemonade (free refills!). Also plenty of shade and clean public restrooms. A genuine oasis on the Mall, and a perfect way to rest and rejuvenate from a hot day of sightseeing! Look for the big round typewriter eraser (for those of us old enough to remember what those were used for!)

RE: washington dc

If you visit Arlington Cemetery, take my advice and ride the tourmobile! It is not very expensive ($8 per person?) and your kids will thank you. You will avoid having to do a lot of walking up and down hills, and you'll have a guide who will tell you about the different parts of the cemetery. You can buy your tourmobile pass at the visitor's center as you enter Arlington.
Kids love the ESPN Zone! And the food is not bad either. Be sure to check out the bathrooms...televisions in every stall!

RE: Adventureland Des Moines IA

We stayed at Adventureland campground last year for Memorial Day weekend, and I posted a review at www.rvparkreviews.com. The campground is definitely showing it's age. The picnic tables are original, which makes them at least 20 years old. They have cracked and peeling paint, and warped seats. The sites are full of potholes where water pools. There are many seasonal campers that frankly look very junky, and you have to walk through their sites to get to the equally junky and rundown playground. The weekend we were there, the pool was not open, even though it was a holiday weekend. On the plus side, there are full hookups, and it is convenient to visiting the amusement park.

RE: I-29 through Iowa CG

We have camped at the campground in Onawa, IA. I think it's a KOA? Nice campground...full hookups and cable, etc. Not a destination, but good for an overnight stop. Have you tried looking at www.rvparkreview.com?

RE: Kansas City Ks

We love Basswood Resort, but it is on the north side of Kansas City, actually in Platte City. It has a pool, nice playground, well-stocked camp store, and plenty of shade. You could stay at the World's of Fun campground, and go to World's of Fun also. But that is a fairly new campground, so I'm not sure they have a lot of shade.

installing an awning

We recently purchased a 1998 Winnebago Class C which did not have an awning. The brackets are there, we just need to replace the canvas. My dear handyman husband believes that this is a job he can do himself with the help of a few buddies. Has anyone had any experience with this? If we order an awning online, how difficult will it be to install it ourselves?

RE: Table Rock Lake Mo. St. Park

Is this a recent picture? If so, I'm depressed that there are still no leaves on the trees! Southern Missouri should be a few weeks ahead of us here in Iowa for spring weather, and I'm wishing it were here already!

Which do we get first?

We're thinking we'd like to downsize to a truck camper. Which should we buy first, the truck or the camper? We'd being buying a truck camper that at least 5 years old. I want a toilet in the camper (don't care so much whether there's a shower). Do we need to get the 8 foot box (long bed) on the truck, in order to have a toilet in the camper? Do all campers fit on all truck beds? Can we get a crew cab (4 door) truck and still find a camper to fit it? Do we need the 3/4 ton, or can we get a 1/2 ton truck?

RE: Washington DC Metro & Bus Service

Be sure you check the hours of the places that you are going to be visiting. Many of the museums don't open until 10:00 AM.

which is better?

How do you tow with your class C? All four wheels on the ground, or just the back two wheels on the ground? We're getting our first class C, and need to figure out how to tow a car with it.

Which is better?

We're still looking for our first Class C. Can't afford to buy new. Is it better to buy a motorhome that's older, but has low miles, or one that is newer, with a lot of miles? What are the pitfalls in buying a motorhome that was a rental unit?

RE: Compton Ridge under new owners

I am surprised to hear that Legacy Resorts was not very popular at Compton Ridge. We've never been to Compton Ridge, but have camped at two other Legacy Resorts...Basswood near Kansas City, and Mark Twain near Hannibal, and we were very pleased with both of those facilities. Wonder what happened at Compton Ridge?

Class C vs. Class A

We're upgrading from a travel trailer to a motorhome this spring. We'll be buying used...something about ten years old. We have two teenagers, who do camp with us most of the time, and will for the next year or so, then it will be just my husband and I. Which would work better for us, a Class C or a Class A? Can anyone comment on the difference in the insurance rates for each? Storage? Miles per gallon? If we buy something ten years old, which one will be a better deal for the money?
