RE: Foxfi working again with JB.. UPDATE on the install

snipe: Foxfi works as good as it ever did except for the new security screen. I will delete that today and re-install it when we travel and I use Foxfi. Do know you can get rid of the security screen lock / no certificate but while disabled (no certificate) FoxFi is not operational. You do not need to uninstall PDAnet+. Do know that it takes about 30 seconds to remove the certificate/lock and about 30 seconds to re-do the certificate/lock and then FoxFi is operational once again. SO,again, after FoxFi is disabled if you click on the PDAnet+ icon, you will be given the option of setting up the certificate/lock and within seconds your FoxFi is again operational..... no need to uninstall PDAnet+.

RE: Foxfi working again with JB.. UPDATE on the install

sherlock, nice tip, thanks. That should make it a little easier. The hints will keep ones dealing with the Security Lock Screen to the bare minimum. Security Lock Screen on occasion is a very small price to pay...to pay along with the $7.95 for the app itself. Of course if someone would rather pay Verizon big bucks for Verizon hot spot then go for it.. :R

RE: Foxfi working again with JB.. UPDATE on the install

Hint in regard to your security screen snivels: 1.On your Motorola Razr Maxx / Razr, go to Settings> "Security & Screen Lock" and change the setting for "Automatically lock" to 30 minutes. 2. At Settings> Security & Screen Lock be sure your screen lock is set-up with "Pattern" and not password or pin. 3. At Settings> Security & Screen lock, and de-select "Power button instantly locks". Do the aforementioned and you will have minimal/rare headaches with the security screen lock. --- I have been working with / testing the fixed app for sometime now and I'm pleased. .

Just setup email account with IMAP on each device. Once you do this, what you do with an email say delete, move it to a different folder, etc. on one device you will see it automatically carried over to all you devices (Laptop, smart phone, ipad, Nexus tablets, etc.. Myself... I use Gmail. I setup with IMAP PUSH. .

RE: GMAIL APP

I have the Gmail app on my Droid Razr Mazz (Android) for emails and for those of you who have this is there a way to delete forever the emails in the Trash bin using the Gmail app? I strongly encourage you so install the Android app, K9 Mail. Install and setup K9 Mail and you will never touch the Gmail app again. K9 Mail is free by the way. Go here. Yes, with K9 Mail you can delete mail and more.. A terrific app that many use. Highly rated to say the least. The Gmail app pales in comparison. Yes, works just fine with the Razr Maxx. On edit: Forgot to mention, no, you cannot empty the trash from the Gmail app. You will need to go to Gmail webpage and under deleted items find trash and then delete trashed emails there.

RE: New Windows 8 Laptop

With the price of hard drives down so far, IMHO a better approach is to buy a large capacity hard drive (>500GB) and use it to make a recovery backup of your entire system. Using the original disks only gets you back to where you started from; it does nothing to protect your data or to include all the software updates you have loaded since you bought the computer. For <$100 you can make a bootable backup of the entire hard drive which makes it possible to restore to exactly the condition at your last backup. Great advice. I'd only add that flash drives (aka USB memory sticks) are starting to have enough capacity for this purpose. I have a 64GB memory stick in front of me that holds my entire system backup, and was about $40. You can get 128GB memory sticks for < $100, and the GB/$ will keep dropping. Sure, I concur but you have to have the $, know how, inkling and such which many here undoubtedly at a loss. I encourage little but to spend the $10-15 for the CD's from the manufacturer of the PC. 8-)

RE: New Windows 8 Laptop

snipe: My copy of Acrobat 8 will not run on Win 8 but it did run on Win 7. So far that's the only significant software problem I have run into. You need Acrobat 11. Indeed Acrobat 8 is a no go with Windows 8.

RE: Sending scanned docs?

And .... of all else fails and you can't get the file size small enough to email, then get yourself a Dropbox, etc. account and send them there and tell whomever to download them from there.

RE: New Windows 8 Laptop

I was also advised by geek squad that most external programs that you added to win 7 or earlier via a cd will not work on win 8 and forces you to go out and buy the newer compatable software for win 8. Could be very costly. You were advised wrong by the "geek squad" guy/gal. IF your software program runs fine on Win 7 it should also run aok on Windows 8. This is fact, not speculation.

RE: New Windows 8 Laptop

When I read posts like SteveRuff's I always want to chime in and say... The next time you buy a new computer (like the one you just bought) take the time and the very few $ to contact the PC assembler (Dell, HP, etc.) ( do this soon after purchase) and have them send you the CD's/DVD with the Operating System and drivers, etc. you have on the PC. This way down the road, say in months or a year or so, when that PC starts acting strange to you, that you can quickly reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system which will leave you with your old PC working just fine again.... and with no need of purchasing a new PC. (unless of course the hard ware is just so outdated) In closing, you can get the disks from the PC assembler for less then $15 usually so it is wise to do so..

RE: Sending Email.

Another work around ........... say you are using Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Windows Mail, etc.. You can go to that email client program and in Account Settings on the main account that you use, change your SMPT server setting to the Gmail SMTP server settings as follows: Gmail SMTP server address: smtp.gmail.com Gmail SMTP user name: Your full Gmail address (e.g. example@gmail.com) Gmail SMTP password: Your Gmail password Gmail SMTP port: 465 Gmail SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes SO, change your SMPT server settings as mentioned above and you will have your email coming in from your Internet Service Provider just like when you are home but you will be sending via GMAIL. You can leave all set up like this whether at home or on the road.

RE: Sending Email.

OP, evidently started traveling yesterday. He is not hooked up to his home network and (example Optimum Online) since he is not on his home network he is now having authentication issues (with SMPT Server) when attempting to send email. In order to prevent strangers from using their SMTP server to send spam, many Internet Service Providers (example Optimun Online) require users to authenticate when they try to send email while accessing the server from -outside the network-. In many cases, users will also need to use a different port number and may need to use SSL. (Contact your ISP regarding settings) Some just won't allow off network access. Long story short, it may not be possible to send your email through your current Internet Service Providers, SMPT server when you are traveling ... not connected to their network. A work around for you... Have your email from Yahoo, AOL and others forwarded to your GMAIL account. You will now be able to READ all your email and to reply to any and all email via GMAIL.

RE: Mail Program Help

I have been trying to use Thunderbird and it is just not to my liking. The inability to block senders is one thing... Not accurate at all. You need to use filters. I block any sender I want with a few clicks. Thunderbird profile folders allows all emails and account passwords to be easily encrypted locally on your computer. More secure than other email clients I've seen. Agreed.. OP can read here how to set-up Thunderbird filters / to use filters. OP, can also go to email provider, his/her account there and block them there using filters. Google search is your friend... 8-)

RE: Mail Program Help

I wasn't a big fan of Thunderbird either. Have you tried Microsoft's replacement for Outlook Express? You can read about it here. It's basically Outlook Express with a facelift. It does have its differences beyond the layout changes, but I think it is about as easy to use as Outlook Express. -Michael This is very inaccurate. Windows Live Mail is a far cry from Outlook Express ...No way is, Windows Live Mail, "Outlook Express with a faceift"

RE: Mail Program Help

What's wrong with Gmail? Well, GMAIL (very good) is not an on computer, email reader, which it seems the OP is wanting. Thunderbird is an email client, email reader, or more formally known as an mail user agent (MUA). Thunderbird is an on computer program used to access and manage ones email. GMAIL on the other hand is a web-based email client, like Yahoo! Mail, Mail.com, Lycos mail, Hotmail, etc.

RE: Mail Program Help

az99 ........ Unless you lets say open yourself up to learning, that your inexperience with email clients will keep being a stumbling block for you in regard to email clients. Thunderbird is very good but you have to understand just what an email client does, how to set one up, etc.. take time to learn versus bailing from a terrific email client like Thunderbird. In regard to your wanting to block senders. You can do that at your email provider's website. In regard to questions on how to use Thunderbird ...... well, a Google search will most always return answers/ instructions on how to accomplish whatever. By the way, Windows Live Mail would be the last thing I would consider installing. Thunderbird is very close to the old Outlook Express.

RE: Android Tablets?

I personally like the 7" form factor because it is much more portable and easier to hold than the 10" tablets. IMO, the Nexus 7 is the best 7" tablet and the Nexus 10 the best 10" tablet. I can't see a tablet ever replacing my netbook or laptop but I guess if all you did with a laptop is read email and surf the web then a tablet could replace it. X2 .....
