RE: Question for ladies

If you hang it on a line outside it will keep the deer away. :BBut it will attract bears, (or so i've heard).
I'm a bear hunter ( or bare hunter:W ) & it does work, but what my wife does is just put them in the little funny wrapper & tuck them into the trash bag.:B

RE: Beginner Fender Benders

You can see it on a lot of semi mirrors
Get
Out
And
Look
A spotter can be a big help but only if they can communicate in words you can understand a poor spotter is worse than no spotter.
When traveling if you can not tell your passenger at any time what vehicle is on any side of you then you are not checking your mirrors often enough ( 10-15 seconds on average ).
Now the beating up part & not just for you but it has always fried my grits that with no training an RV'er could venture out on the highways with a rig as long as an over the road semi. I would really love to see an RV endorsement with a driving test a strict as the CDL test is complete with a full vehicle inspection , I believe it would save a lot of insurance claims & some lives every year.
Grew up on a farm so knew about equipment early but started driving semi's long enough ago that driving schools didn't exist when my new boss tossed me the keys said it was the grey mack & waved his arm towards the south L A's that way call when I was MT. Please remember there was a lot less traffic & I would not encourage anyone to do that now but that was how many of us learned.

RE: Air Pressure: Door Sticker or Tire Rating, which to use?

Unless the tires are the exact same as OE then I would go by the sidewall.

RE: Tire max load rating

Hi all,
I've read in these forums of people putting more air in their tires then the recommended-tire-pressure max stamped on the tires. I can imagine that this would help reduce the tire sidewall flexing when under a heavy load. What are you're thoughts on the matter? Are we actually decreasing the tires ability to carry a load by not adhering to the tire specs?
Larry
Larry,
It's not only the tires but the rim and the valve stem as well. The OEM will use the cheapest wheel possible to meet the specs for the vehicle. I don't know all the particulars of what makes a wheel rated for higher pressures, but I don't believe you can just crank up the air pressure beyond what the wheel is rated to handle. Also, valve stems come in a variety of pressure ratings. So, cranking up the pressure beyond the stems rated value may lead to a failure there.
The long and short is to run your tires at their max rated pressure when towing. If you still have squishy side walls you need to consider upgrading tires to the maximum load rating your wheels will handle. If your wheels aren't up to the task, you might consider new wheels with a higher rating.
KJ
Good points but I would only run max listed pressures if I was too lazy to get a actual scale weight for my rig.
If you get the scale weight then take the axle loads & use this method for determining the air pressure required:
A) From the sidewall max load @ max pressure ( divide load by pressure ) 3,000 lbs @ 80 psi
B) 1/2 your axle weight ( determines the load per tire )5,200# divided by 2 2,600#
C ) divide B by A the result is the psi needed to carry that load
3,000/80 = 37.5 2,600/37.5 = 69.33333333 call it 70 psi
I add 5 psi to that so as to be able to add more cargo if needed later .:B

Lost a drive tire while pulling a dry van once & it completely removed 9 cross members from the trailer yeah there is a lot of power in one.

RE: Running refrig while driving

I believe you will find about 95% of us do. And the other five percent are not telling the truth. Bill
I'm in the 5% that is correct & I do not run the fridg when traveling. In the past 3 million OTR miles I've seen a good # of burned RV's & almost every one showed signs that the fire started at or near the fridg & that is enough for me.:S

RE: Half Empty/ Half Full... lol

For a few years we had two TTs. One was 22 ft and weighed about 5000 Lbs loaded. The other is called a 29 but is actually about 33 ft and weighs about 3000 lbs more than the smaller. We got the same or better mpgs with the longer heavier trailer at the same speeds over the same roads. The bigger trailer is much more aerodynamic than the smaller, having a more rounded front, propane tanks enclosed within the trailer body instead of being out on the tongue, and it has a fully enclosed underbelly. Have no opinion on the shocks the larger trailer has.
Some where IIRC there is a formula for boats that equates hull length with speed & longer was faster.:?

Your # of 660# is correct & I agree with LAdams that a hitch in the range of 1,000# would add a lot to my comfort level if it was me towing.

I thought this might be a personal problem. :B
I also thought diet & exercise but after looking at the pictures I do believe that the hitch head angle is in need of adjustment & not having played with the Reese WDH it looks like it should be a couple of notches off.

No but I have used the Firestone ride-rite bags & really did like them & mostly because when I was MT I only carried 10-20# in them but when loaded that got bumped up to as much as 80#.

RE: Are you a T.V. beta tester?

I worked for a testing firm & while they do a pretty good job they can't test for everything though some of the things we did would make your hair stand up, like pulling 65k with a 6.7 Cummins up & down a 5 mile 6% grade 24/7 & when that wasn't enough bump it to 80k. Answering the cell phone & find a engineer asking you to go faster & telling him that yes I'm already doing 85 & its pitch black & raining how much faster is really necessary?? Or testing a new hand built pump pulling 137k up a 5% grade at 65 mph & having to back uot cause you can't make the corners any faster.

RE: When is a diesel too quiet?

If I arrive at a campground late at night. I don't want to wake everyone up. I also don't want to have to turn the engine off when at the bank drive through so the teller can hear me talk. I like my quiet diesel.
Well you don't have to worry since I boondock you won't hear my straight piped Cummins at 3 in the AM.
