RE: Leaving grey tanks open?

We keep it closed until it needs to be dumped. Helps rinse debris from bottom of the tank. We also do a backflush every so ofter that still get more crud out. I do try to keep food pieces from going down the drain.

RE: border-crossing fee for Canadians ?

Full story here
Traveler's tax the beginning of a border wall?
U.S. wants to impose border-crossing fee for Canadians
PutzIt is NOT the US (that would include you and I) - it is only certain members of Congress who really don't know any of the ramifications! Prediction - never ( at least in near future) pass and become law.
The congressional leaches can't suck enough blood out of the US citizens to line their pockets and pay for their boon doggles so now they want to suck the poor Canadian citizens dry. Is ay we should tax them on all the trips they take.

RE: Bleach solution through filter holder

I hook up all my fresh water lines to the output of my filter and place the filter as close to the house water outlet as possible. Then I remove the filter and put about 1 inch of clorox in the clear housing.
I then fill the fresh water tank (60 gal) with water and then run the camper water pump to fill the hot water tank and get chlorine smelling water out of all the hot and cold faucets, and no more pink color.
Let that stand over night and then pump all the water from the fresh water tank into the black and gray tanks. Dump and rinse the black and gray tanks and then dump any water left in the fresh tank.
Take the filter out of the line and run fresh water through all the hoses and all the faucets in the RV until no chlorine smell. Then top off fresh water tank to level desired for trip. Put the filter back in the housing, or put in new one. Roll up, cap and stow all hoses and go off and enjoy ourselves.

RE: Stanley Steemer- Coach Carpet ?

Had our carpet steam cleaned in our RV two years ago at the Winnebago GNR. It was so hot there the water dried out before it hit carpet and the vacuum sucked the dirt up with it. :R

RE: Air ride for motorhome

After lots of searching and comparing we had the Kelderman system installed front and rear along with stiffer sway bars. We stopped in the Kelderman factory in Iowa on a trip and had them look at what settings we were using. They made time for us the next morning and replaced the front shocks with "softer" Monroe's and set the air pressure front and rear and tire pressure. The ride has been perfect since.
The Kelderman people were the nicest group overall we had ever done business with. Since they design and make all their own parts on site they know what they are talking about. They didn't try to sell us the fancy extras and they discussed the pros and cons of them openly. They said the only thing we needed were the front shocks, and anything else would just be feel good parts.
They have a couple of pads you can stay at their place while they do any work and there is a nice little state park less than 1 mile from them.
Can't wait for the weather to improve so we can get on the road again.
But that's just my comfortable riding opinion FWIW. ;-)

RE: Need a Road Map program for Mac

I run the Trailer Life Directory Campground Navigator under Paralles wIndow 7 setup. Have been running this since 2007 with no problems.
I can even use an external USB GPS receiver left over from a PC program to get data live on the road.

RE: Options For Replacing Water Heater Plug

Are there any options for replacing the plastic water heater plug? It's a pain to get off and I can see the plastic corners getting rounded off. Is there a different thing I can use to make my life easier? FWIW, these are what I have now. Drain plugs.
Im pretty sure this pic belongs to someone on here. I saved it for reference because I want to do the same thing. Clever Idea!
http://i1158.photobucket.com/albums/p614/Tony_Forde/rv-water-heater-drain-valve-with-hose_zpsb9e222a7.jpg width=500
Did this mod on mine but didn't put valve on end. Used a hose that the plug screwed in on the end. I can hand tighten it and it doesn't leak.
The big advantage is when I drain tank it doesn't run all over the side of the RV.

RE: Road trip, east to west

I always start my planning in Google Maps becasue it's free.
I put in the start location and the final destination and let it do route. Then I drag the path to the various intermediate locations (parks, etc.) that I want to go to. This will give you a preliminary idea of how long it will take to see everything and the distances in between points.
I then go the Trailer Life Campground Navigator and put in the start and end points. I use the output from Google to select the points of interest and then calculate the route. You can set when you want to start in the morning (8am) and how long you want to drive (5hrs) in settings. It will then show where you should stop based on that info and will recommend campgrounds close to that point.
I then use that as "recommendations" for the trip. I have a GPS input into my laptop so DW can use this map as we drive along and get close to where we want to stop.
Just my two cents for what it's worth

RE: Best TOAD for 4 Down Towing?

Wow! Great responses from many of you. Thank You. After reading all of your responses I've put together a list of my preferences.
My preferences: KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid
1) Prefer NOT to pull fuses, etc.
2) Prefer NOT to run vehicle through gears, etc.
3) Prefer NOT to have steering lock or key issues
4) Prefer four passenger capacity rather than two
5) Prefer not to have any towing MPH limitation
6) Do not require 4x4, but would be nice
We tow an 2009 Toyota Yaris 3 door (hatchback). It weighs just 2240# (actual scale weight with full tank) seats 4 people, gets 43+ mpg (real) on regular gas and meets all your requirements. Plus it was cheap.

RE: Autozone Fires a Hero!

You'd think that as a veteran he'd know how to follow the orders of his superiors.
He's not a hero, he's a hotdog- no wonder he's not in the Service anymore!
I spent 20 years in the Military, including 5 tours in Viet Nam so you could have the right to post a stupid opinion like that. You sound like one of the people who called me a baby killer and spit on me in the 60's. You had the right to do that too.
I bet you even have a sticker on your RV that thanks a vet.
Excuse me while I go barf.

Also had the problem with my 2012 Itasca Sunstar 30T on first trip from dealer. They add fluid and it went away. Problem came back three months later in Colorado Springs. Added fluid and it went away.

Automatic Post Updates

It may be posted but I have not been able to find it. I have been know to miss the obvious before.
I can do an advanced search for posts I have made and get a list of all of them, but I have to manually check for updates.
I can also subscribe to a given topic and have notifications sent whenever anyone posts to this topics.
But what I'm looking for is a setting that will remind you when someone sends an update to your posted message/response.

RE: Electronic Manuals

Do you download electronic versions of all the RV and appliance manuals? Scan them? Something else? I have the paper copies but I am looking for a way to keep them on my iPad, iPhone, PCs...etc.
I have been using the camscan app on the iPad to make PDFs of them, then read them in the Kindel or iBooks app. It's working pretty well but it is a little tedious. I make a scan of each page as I read them for the first time.
Jim
I've been lucky and found on line versions of everything in my RV. Including all the technical drawings for my Sunstar from Winnebago.
I "print them to pdf" on my desktop and make sure the FIle name I save them as and the Title shown at the bottom of the pdf save dialog box are the same. (If you don't do this step they may appear with garbage names in your book reader.) You can just drop them on the Books icon on the iTunes sidebar and they will be available in iBooks on your
iPad and iPhones after the next sync.
If it's a web page that has the RSS Reader capability I select that function before I save as pdf. That way all the ads get removed.
What I can't find on line I scan and save as pdf's to the desktop labeled the same way as above.
Hope this helps.

RE: Large RV sales centers

When we decide we need a new RV we start looking at RV dealers in the areas we are camping in at the time. We stop in with our tow car and browse the lot for prices on units we are interested in. If their prices look good we get a card from the salesman and keep the info for future consideration. Then we go home and look at similar units at our local dealers.
I have found that in my town (Albuquerque) the "large dealers" may have a bigger selection of the units they sell but the smaller dealers are the ones that offer the best deals.
I purchased my latest RV out of state because the dealer (LaMesa in Tucson) beat the "best trade difference offer" I got in my area by almost $20K. LaMesa was one of the places we stopped to look at RV's on a trip.
The RV business is hurting for sales in my area, and probably yours. You need to shop around "all" the dealers and play them against each other until you get the deal YOU want.
PS I always start looking on line first to get an idea of what is available and the recommended prices.
That's my two cents, FWIW.

i'm sure it's a mom and pop operation, but thought that pretty neat.

RE: updating an iPhone 4s to io6?

We have 2 3GS phones and upgraded with no problems. Everything works just fine, but then we don't have some of the features the 4/5 phones have. Maps was not a big item for us so no issue waiting for them to improve it.
We also have two 3GS iPhones. Before the update we couldn't use them as Mobile Hotspot either USB or Bluetooth to my Powerbook Pro. After upgrade Mobile Hotspot now works with USB. Haven't tried Bluetooth yet.

RE: How to keep squirrels out of engine area?

I have used Fox urine to stop mice getting into the generator. Just spray it on the outside down low. You can get it at any hunting store. Get it in spray bottle.
Have to put it on about every two months. Don't get it anywhere that can get it inside.
Good luck
Ron
I had packrats in my engine compartment that did $700 damage over two seasons. Like you, on recommendation, I tried Bobcat urine sprayed on the ground around the RV. It didn't keep the packrats out but the two male bobcats that it attracted ate them. The neighbors weren't too happy when the bobcats stuck around and ogled their bird feeders. :B

RE: A leaking valve stem cure.

I put metal valve stems on my RV as soon as possible after I buy it. Get mine from Bill Falkenborg bill@theborgman.com at Borg Tire Supply http://yourtireshopsupply.com/.
They are all quality stems and are made to fit specific wheel sets. They will selll you sets that extend far enough past the wheel covers so you can check pressure easier and put a TPMS on if you want without having to remove the covers.
No I don't work for them. Just passing on info on what I believe is a quality product and supplier.
That's my opinion FWIW.
