RE: Insayn's 2013 road trip prep.

I'm glad they will have Air conditioning.... 80 plus degree days are already here... and Tuesday morning we may have a frost. My figs are already about 1 1/4" in diameter... most of the flowering trees have already gone to seed.... It will be scortching hot by the time you hit the deep south. Going home through the high mountains will feel very good... Let me know if you need anything from this end... I'll pm you with my cell phone number... just in case..... Sleepy

RE: My first trip report

I agree... your mpg is very bad... My 2003 Duramax/allison, crewcab with one of the biggest, and heaviest TC's made... it gets 15.1 mpg and that's my average for over 65000 miles.... the TC on all the time. Thanks for sharing your trip report. sleepy

RE: Lance truck campers TPO Nose construction

Sunshine is good for depression..... ... it's time for a trip... to see the good and the beautiful in things... it's there for tose that seek it. Life has been hard for the last year... time to move on to better things... I think I'll go see a Lance dealer :C We love our 1161... but that 1172 looks nice in the pictures. Chet BTW... I hit the "like" button on some of the posts.

RE: Lance truck campers TPO Nose construction

I had an owl hit my old truck camper back in the '70's... it ruined the moulding and crumpled some of the aluminum siding on the front right corner of the nose. I've also seen some limb damage on other peoples truck campers... A very nice thing about TPO is that it never gets brittle from age... it doesn't have any phthalates (the chemical that makes the "new car" smell as it evaporates from plastics... then the plastics get brittle.... sun light accelerates it) GMC started using TPO for the dashboard in their Kodiak's a few years ago... remember when cracked dashboards were common? And...AZDEL a replacement for Luan.... I would pay as much as $3000 to have the "skin" on my 2003 truck camper replace with the replacement that Lance (and Others?) have come up with. They have some other interesting videos at their website: Click here; Then click on "In Recent News" It would be nice if we were getting links from our truck camper friends about other manufacturers innovations. Informed decisions are essential if you don't want to waste a lot of money on the wrong camper or the worthless truck made by an otherwise good company I've learned a lot on the truck camper forum over the last 10 years... most of what I've learned has helped me make wise(r) decisions and put my hard earned money to the best use. Thanks to all of you. Sleepy

RE: Lance truck campers TPO Nose construction

Interesting....but personally I would not produce a promotional video for my products with a dumpster behind me. Unless I was in the trash business. Gee! I didn't notice the dumpster... but then again... I'm not a janitor, a busboy, or a garbage hauler... I'm obcessed by all things truck camper... all brands, all innivations, and all of the places they'll take me and my wife... BTW.. she didn't see the dumpster either... and no body else commented.. Hummmmmmmm! :S ................... For years the Bigfoot had a real advantage... nose, roof, and sidewalls all fibreglas... but heavy (no grocer haulers would carry them.) Anything that protects the nose and the side walls is an advance... way beyond what most of us have... and these have the added value of light weight. Do any of you have these new features... would you please report? I just might go look at them.... sleepy

Lance truck campers TPO Nose construction

Lance has a video showing the strength of the TPO nose... ... and if you'll let the video continue to run Lances new water proof, sound absorbing side material is explained Click here...Very good... I wish that my 2003 model 1161 had both... I think that most manufacturers will be using both. We are all better off as our different manufacturers inovate. sleepy

RE: Finally Getting Started: New Garage With RV Bay

I've been curious about your progress.... thanks for the update. At least you are now near the point where everything will be constructive... you've had a good share of destructive. You have proven one point... that despite our best plans sometimes "Sh*t happens!" Looking forward to your pictures.... and the build. :B Sleepy

RE: What really chaffs yer hide when TC'ing?

Strange thread, I thought it was going to be about TCs. :) Seriously though, I find I go to the same campgrounds over and over if I stay in a campground. Much of what people have complained about would be the same if you were in a 40' motorhome. picky picky... TC owners have choices that others don't have I thought Jim was trying to gather all of the reasons to boondock... so the newbe's would understand the facination of fully equipped truck campers... It is sad to see a TC with solar panels, built in generator (or at least rigged to be secure and run without being noticed), inverters, and everything else ... sitting in a RV park (ing lot) just because their owners are afraid to be alone at night. Our TC choices include never attending a RV scrum, or if we find ourselves in a place thats uncomfortable... just move on. BTW... have you ever been so alone in your Truck Camper that you can't see a light anywhere, can't hear a man made sound anywhere, that you can open the hatch over your cabover bed and see the milky way... as crip as the best picture that you've ever seen? No neghbors, no dogs, no smoke, no kids, no sounds.... like being in a vacuum. Do it once and you'll be hooked. And yes... I feel sorry for those that endure the campground when the have the means to avoid them. sleepy

RE: What really chaffs yer hide when TC'ing?

Jim... what is a campground....? The hot bath must be very special... $50 per day including the mud bath both going and coming. If they had supplied the towels would you have been happy. I think that this is just another April Fools joke isn't it? The nice thing about being totally self contained and avoiding parking spots that you have to pay for is that when you find yourself in a mess you can just drive away. Good to see you on the forum. RE: Truck camper meet-up at Overland Expo, Flagstaff, May

I'm looking forward to the pictures and reports... sorry that we can't be there. It sounds like this might be the "event of the century" for truck campers. It will certainly be hard to beat. Thanks Steve for getting it all together. Sleepy and Janet

RE: Insayn's 2013 road trip prep.

If you are driving all the way from Oregon to the Southeast, we would recommend, Fredricksburg, TX, Savannah, GA, and Charleston SC. See our blog. Looks like my cousin works at the Houston Zoo in the big cats area. She can get us in the back to feed the tigers, lions and other big cats. Soooo, with that we may be shooting across LA to TX and visit her zoo. From there, would head north probably hitting San Antonio for the Alamo and Austin for the bats. What is the allure of Fredicksburg TX? Since it is pretty close between San Antonio and Austin we can swing through there. Fredericsberg, TX is a "German" town in the middle of Texas... close the Lyndon Johnson's ranch. Janet and I passed through... it was one of those places where the tourists are thick, shopping and lined up for pan cakes... we moved on. I wrote about Lyndon Johnsons home place at the time.... but completely ignored the tourist trap. Just out opinion.

RE: How many TCers here?

me too, since 1969 103 I've met many, many TC owners that have never heard of RV.net... or the TC forum We are still here... and still tied to the doctors "surgical gown" strings and to PT,.. and I'm trying to ignore my PSA. We are walking on the path along the lake for exercise... 5000 to 7000 steps I've been modifying our TC a little, repairing small thingss, and dreaming. We are about ready to load up for some day trips, and a few over-nighters. Maybe see some of the OP's Civil War sites close by. Reminder.... use your campers, travel, sight see, camp.... don't waste a minute. We have lost a few TC friends.... we're happy that the resy of you are still with us.

RE: Finally Getting Started: New Garage With RV Bay

I've been thinking about your 5' second floor set backs... At most homes that I've visited one side or the other will be the prefered sitting/entertaining area.... If I were doing it I think that I'd pick my favorite side and do a 10' Covered setback (with a view of the T Birds, or to have privacy, or even to have ample room for a jaquazi... with the possibility for screens (we have a lot of mosquitos in the evenings). I like your window wall... I'd leave it on the non-setback side. You'd still have the 20' x 30' ballroom... I am jealous :B Sleepy

RE: Finally Getting Started: New Garage With RV Bay

Great write up, and project. Well thought out.... the extension of the house ties it all together. My carport is exactly 12 feet.... with no doors. If I had roll-up/overhead self storing doors I couldn't get mt TC through the opening. With sliding "barn" doors 12 feet openings would be sufficient for my TC's air conditioners 11foot plus height. To the readers of your post.... Fit and scale are a real dellimia on these projects.... My friend Tom built a super garage with 14' roll up doors and a gable roof to match his 3 story house (the floor is at basement level with 1 1/2 open stories above the top of his RV's )... It was scarry to go up in it... the lights were so high that they didn't furnish enough light at ground level to be able to see the difference between phillips head screws and any other types. A couple of tractor trailers or Greyhound Bus's would fit in it... it was totally out of scale with his house... and his upscale neighborhood. Sleepy

RE: external fuses keep popping on my trnsfrmr

`I'm not sure this isn't an april fools joke... the OP's joined yesterday... on the 30th of March The 1st and only posts needs to run a generator to charge a cell phone (use the cig lighter in the truck or the camper might be a solution) misspelling seems to be on purpose... tensformer spelled corectly in one place m-meter ? correctly called a VOM... volt olm meter... or multimeter The Lance manual that tells him how to find the "hidden" fuse correctly lables the PD 9145... as a converter/charger so why would she have to rename the device. Just finding the fuse takes a certain degree of intelligence.... that isn't otherwise exhibited Assuming Lancaster is California... go to Lance... If in Pennsylvania... go to a camping world... get it fixed... let them fix future problems... My answer is my April fools joke a day early!

RE: external fuses keep popping on my trnsfrmr

I strarted out confused by the title of this thread what is the "transformer" a new device? battery chargers, converters, and inverters are names that I'm familiar with... even automatic transfer switch's... and battery isolators could it be that we don't know exactly what the OP has and is trying to do? Of course I've only owned TC's since 1970... and only been on the forum for close to 10 years... I might have missed something that should be obvious to me.

RE: TC upgrade, medical, and 50 years

Thanks everyone for your kind comments and good wishes. These response aren't surprising to us... In the general population 25 or 50 years seem to be a long time to be married... but not in the world of truck campers. Most of the hundreds of TC folks that we've met enjoy being together, they are best friends as well as lovers. The more we do together the better life is. I'm sure that someone has asked you, "How can you stand to be cooped up in that little camper?" They will never understand that the closeness is the best part in so many ways.... touching everytime we pass is a bonus. We wish all of you the best of everything... you make us smile everytine we think about you. Each of you have been a very important part of our life. Janet and Chet Now... back to preping the truck camper... it's time to try to get back on the road.
