RE: 2005 Safari Panther C-13 525hp fuel mileage

I appreciate all the info. I also found out that another member went to look at this motorhome and he stated that it wasn't what was advertised and he walked away from it. I will be out looking at it on Tuesday and from everything that I have seen I think I will be walking away from it also.
Thanks for all the info.

2005 Safari Panther C-13 525hp fuel mileage

I am considering purchasing a 2005 Safari Panther with C-13 525hp with 295/80R22.5 tires which need replacing. The Alladin system shows that it is getting 5.5mpg over the life of the vehicle. It has a 4.30 rear axle ratio and I believe that due to the ratio the motorhome runs in the wrong RPM at highway speed causing this terrible fuel mileage. The tires need replacing before I purchase the vehicle and I found a Michelin tire (295/60R22.5) that is 4" shorter with a higher load range that will give me a numerically higher rear axle ratio (575 revs per mile vs 503 revs per mile) and change the rpm sweet spot on this CAT engine and hopefully improve my fuel mileage. What are your thoughts?

2005 Safari Panther

So I didn't purchase the 2004 Panther that I was looking at last December or the 2003 shortly after that. I am in the middle of negotiating for a 2005 Panther Diamond with a C-13 525hp Cat. The list price on this motorhome when new was $444k so it has a lot of options on it. Is there anyone out there that has a similar Panther with this engine? I am a little worried about the CAT engine based upon the forum information that I have read. How about the basic construction? I am going to see if for the first time hopefully next week, any
particular things I should be looking for such as the radiator, etc? What kind of fuel mileage are you getting? How does it run going up the mountains? The aladdin system shows 5.5mpg, is this normal?
Thanks!

RE: Skyriver RV in Dublin, CA

I wanted to test drive a Motorhome that I was really interested in purchasing and they wanted all the financing, loan papers etc. filled out before I could drive it. I walked away from them.

RE: What do you DIY'ers use to jack and secure your rig?

I built wooden ramps that raise the vehicle almost 5" which gives me enough room to get under the vehicle. I then use jack stands under the frame in the unlikely event that the air bags drop.

RE: Jasper engines 454

Years ago I had the opportunity to fly to their factory and take a tour to watch them rebuild engines. I was very impressed at the cleanliness and care they took to measure all of the parts, replace what was out of spec and rebuild the engines. I would recommend them highly. I have 36 years in the automotive service repair industry and am a Master Technician since 1975 . ( not bragging, just saying I know what I am talking about)

RE: Nuances of driving a DP

I have a 97 Imperial 40WDS and I tow a Ford Edge. I have an 8.3l "C" engine with around 325hp. When I drive I always keep the exhaust brake off until I need it. I remounted the switch so it is easy to reach so that when I need it quickly I can turn it on. I don't like the slowing down when I release the gas pedal while cruising. I have never tried turning on the cruise while the exhaust brake is applied. As for economy, I would use it when cruising but not if you are on hilly terrain. As for the boost gauge, it is telling you how much turbo-charger boost you have in the engine which equates to more power on acceleration. Without a pyrometer (exhaust temperature) gauge I would use it to make sure that you re running with peak efficiency while driving down the road. The harder you press down on the pedal, the higher it should go until it peaks out. You need to get a feel for where the gauges normally reside while driving under different conditions so that you will easily know when there is a problem. As for acceleration, remember the journey is as much fun as getting to the destination. Enjoy the scenery as you are chugging up those hills and mountains. You will get there even if it is a few minutes slower than everyone else.

RE: Should I buy an expensive/complicated MH?

This is just my personal opinion:
I am a firm believer in the following; if I can't fix it myself I have no business owning a motorhome......
with that said, I cannot imagine knowing very little about a complicated machine such as even my old beast and having to pay someone else to do everything. I enjoy tinkering with the motorhome and I get frustrated when things break and I have to try and find the answers using whatever I can find on the net (wiring diagrams, manuals, etc.) But in the end, I love my motorhome and the joy it brings to me.

RE: rv manual

What year Imperial do you have? I have a 1997 HR Imperial 40WDS and I believe that I have the manual on my computer somewhere. You can also pull a lot of the manuals for the different systems on your motorhome online. Also, call Monaco and give them the VIN number of your motorhome and they should be able to send you info.

RE: KwiKee Steps Will Not Extend

I was plugged into shore power and my steps quit working, when I checked the voltage I found that my system was overcharging the batteries at 16V. As soon as I unplugged the steps started working.
Just something to check.

RE: Cummins C 8.3 versus ISC 8.3 visual difference??

An ISC won't have a mechanical injector pump hanging on the side of the engine like the C8.3. My C8.3 has a single valve cover so it depends on the year. Look at the engine tag, find the engine serial number and call Cummins.

RE: sewer or sulfer smell

Are you sure it is a sewer or sulphur smell? Could it be a moldy smell coming from the fins of the evaporator on the a/c unit? When the a/c system is running, water gets trapped in the fins of the evaporator and will turn to mold. You get a strong whiff of it when you firrst turn on the blower motoer. There are products that you can spray on the evaporator fins that will kill the mold. We do it in auto's all the time.

RE: Fire Extingisher

Bought mine from Mac the fire guy and mounted it on the wall behind the fridge. I also bought a large extinguisher and mounted it above my engine in the event of an engine fire. Both open by temp. I also mounted a regular extinguisher in the propane bay for quick access.

RE: Is this the power steering pump?

Inside of that big black tank are filters that need to be changed. There can be between one and three filters in there. I would start by contacting Monaco and purchase the filters, remove the top of the tank, suck out all the oil, replace the filters and refill. It may take care of your noise. The hose clamp on the a/c line was an aftermarket repair kit for a new hose. The barbed end went into the hose and the clamp holds it on.

Don't forget the driveshaft slip joint and the u joints. There are also fittings on things like throttle cables if your coach is older

Have you upped the power on your C8.3L Cummins?

How many of you have upped the power of your mechanical 7100 pump on your C8.3L Cummins? I have spent the better part of the last few hours reading about making adjustments to the AFC and changing the fuel plate along with changing the boost pressure to my waste gate. I have a Banks Stinger kit on mine already but I only get around 24-26psi of turbo boost at full throttle and my EGT rises to 1350 before I back off. I am thinking of doing some of the modifications to my engine to get rid of the turbo lag that I get when I take off and to try and lower the EGT. Has anyone done any of these mods and what was the result?
