RE: OOOPS! Left My Door Open Today!

I have done the opposite. Got out of the coach with it running keys in the ignition and closed the door. It has keyless entry with just the key chain fobs and no pad on the outside. I had to phone DW to drive over with her keys. Did I mention I left my coat and cell phone in the coach and it was -10 celcius and I had to walk 2 blocks to a phone.

When properly tightened lug nuts will seldom come loose, BUT it does happen. That is why they should be re torqued after a few miles.

Going from driving a vehicle with hydraulic brakes to air brakes there are notable differences. Hydraulic brakes, if the pedal goes soft or down you should know you have a problem coming.
Air brakes, the pedal feels the same pretty much all the time. If the brakes are set up and you make a fast stop it does not take much pressure on
the pedal to achieve that. As the adjustment get loose the force needed on the pedal increases similar to regular brakes but not as noticeable. This happens over time and miles and on a motorhome it probably takes awhile before the adjustment changes significantly. What does happen is people get complacent and the brakes work fine in stop and go traffic. The kicker is when all of a sudden you have to make a panic stop and your standing on the brake pedal and it is not stopping fast.
Some of the experience on here offers some good good advice to people new to DP's and air brakes.
No you don't have to get under your coach every time it moves, but you should realize it needs to be done periodically and either know or learn how to do it or have it done and know your not getting ripped off by some unscrupulous mechanic. There are responsible people on the road and then there are the ones who thumb their nose at someone trying to give good safe responsible advice.I really don't know what microwave ovens and airplanes have to do with air brakes. Sheesh!

It wouldn't have lasted 50,000 miles without being greased! How long have you had it and how many miles have you put on it? I would have them checked soon!I grease mine every 2 or 3 thousand miles.

You are right, that there are auto tank drains available. I replaced several of them on commercial trucks with manual drains. They may work alright on a coach but I found after period of use they would be the source of an air leak. I much prefer the manual ones with the lanyard to pull to eliminate getting under there to drain them.

The parking brake applies to the rear wheels only. In that situation I would think it would put alot of stress on the jacks. I have air leveling so I don't claim to know all about jacks, but I think I would look for a better spot.

First off if the back wheels are almost off the ground,and the parking brake is applied what is holding your coach from going backward down the hill? The jacks!! I don't know if I would be comfortable with that!!

The fact that you think you have auto air tank purging and air driers on your compressor says to me you really don't fully understand your system. What you hear purging would be the air dryer that is plumbed into your air system that removes most of the moisture out of the air before it gets to your tanks.
I don't think most people need the same course a truck driver needs but should have an idea of what they are driving and that it should be maintained. Air brake systems are more complicated and need to be because of they weight they need to stop. There are alot of safety measures built in to them like auto slacks and such that need to be maintained. You may scoff at us old truckers all you want, but telling people that are new to this that you can just get in it and drive it without knowing anything about it is just plain Bad Info.

Check out the wiring under the seat to the plug. It could be worn through from years of swiveling the seat around and sorting against the metal frame. My copilot seat would quit working some times when it got swiveled and I found the wire harness was tied off too short and it would pull the plug apart.The lock on the plastic plug was broken allowing this to happen.

Air brake systems are more complex than regular juice brake systems and do require a basic understanding of how they work, and how they should be maintained.I have heard people say "how many old folks can climb under their rig and set up their brakes?" It is not the fact that they can't do it is it more like they should know it needs to be done periodically and have it done for them. There is a very valid reason why commercial drivers need air brake training, and it is a little more than just pushing a pedal. Even hydraulic brakes have there limitations with a big class a and certain road conditions and not knowing you can overheat the brake fluid can lead to a scary or worse situation.
You are totally correct. Lets make a class on brakes, Hydraulic and air mandatory before you can purchase a motor vehicle :S
Then let's make it mandatory you take a class before you purchase a MH.:S
Then let's see what it does to MH sales?
At least everyone will be safe. :h
Is that what you want?
No that is not what I would want, but a little common sense would be in order.
Looking at it from your point of view lets just take away the requirement for drivers licences for all classes of vehicles.
That way no one has to take any classes and car truck and motorhome sales would soar.
Personally I have helped people on the side of the road with air brake problems. Broken air line, loss of all air and spring brakes applied and there they sat. Luckily they got it out of the traffic lane. They had no idea what was wrong, and if they could get the brakes off they could just carry on. It can and does happen more than you think.
By the way pilots can't just jump in an airplane and fly it, or should we just trust the smart folks.

It is no different than driving an air brake equipped truck! If you need a CDL to drive a truck then I think you should have to pass some sort of test to drive a heavy class A.

Just think!! If we all used Gator Aid bottles we could eliminate having black tanks and dump hoses and searching for dump stations.
In my experience of being a trucker I have never been that good that I could pee in a bottle while driving down the road. I know it is done but it's got to be messy. The ones I have seen throwing these things out the window are usually imported drivers. May be that is what is done where they come from.

When I first started pulling our 28 ft. fifth wheel and traveling to places we had never been, I got 2 5 gal. plastic fuel cans and filled them with diesel. I packed them with me on our first 2 trips and never came close to needing them. There was always somewhere to get fuel that was easy in and out. If you would feel better packing extra fuel by all means do it, then there is one less thing to worry about.
