RE: Vigilantes rule the streets, police stand by and watch

Sounds like the rumor of a Canadian landholder initiating this is what makes them think they can do something about it. To me it's a no-win situation. Get inside the walls or head elsewhere.

RE: Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta Road

Here's some fotos of my drive. I'd say it's not worse than highway 80 to Melaque or the old section of highway 200 near Compostela. It's been paved for quite awhile and the main problem is during and just after the rainy season when they have to repair the road. Happens every year but with little rain this year it's probably pretty good
Mascota and Highway 70
Adding - I'm not an RV'er

RE: places to dive along the west coast

Nothing on the west coast compares to the Caribbean. There are dive shops and tours in Manzanillo but the water is always a little murky and the coral is less than spectacular

I haven't had a passport stamp in years and most of the old ones you could barely read. Sounds like a little money in the pocket at a certain border crossing to me

RE: Where to stay south of Punta Perula

We checked out Tenacatita when we were down last year. There were a lot of no see ems at the time. Do you know if those nasty itty bitty bugs are there all the time??
Never bothered me there .... but we always made day trips from Melaque and left before sundown. There is a large lagoon behind

RE: Where to stay south of Punta Perula

You can't launch in Playa Mora at Tenacatita but you'd never get your rig over there. Probably could wheel it to the beach from parks in town when waves are not large
Boca de Iguanas has large surf and not sure if the trailer park has a gate to the beach wide enough (security)
Best launching beaches are Melaque (west end) and the Barra lagoon. Melaque (west end) has an "undeveloped" trailer park right on the beach with small/no surf. There are also some lot rentals in that area set up for RV's. The Barra lagoon has a real launch ramp but not close to RV spaces

Lodging, you are on your own tho you may get some suggestions. The drive is not that remarkable and you could probably do much better by flying

RE: Swine Flue Warning

United States Consulate General Guadalajara
PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT TO AS MANY AMERICAN CITIZENS AS POSSIBLE
Warden Message #06 FY2009
April 24, 2009
Flu Outbreak in Mexico
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico advises that as a precaution, Mexican authorities closed all schools in the Federal District and in the State of Mexico on April 24, 2009 as the Mexican Secretariat of Health announced hundreds of cases of flu in the country, some of which may be the H1N1 strain of “swine flu”. Some other public institutions, such as museums and government offices, are also closed. Exact numbers of the people infected with the various strains of flu are unavailable. The U.S. Embassy has no additional information about closures.
The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens in Mexico that most cases of influenza are not “swine flu”; any specific questions or concerns about flu or other illnesses should be directed to a medical professional. Although the U.S. Embassy cannot give medical advice or provide medical services to the public, a list of hospitals and doctors can be found on our website at the following link: http://mexico.usembassy.gov/sacs_medical_info.html (Spanish)
http://mexico.usembassy.gov/eng/eacs_medical_info.html (English)
At this time the Mexican Secretariat of Health urges people to avoid large crowds, shaking hands, kissing people as a greeting, or using the subway. Maintaining a distance of at least six feet from other persons may decrease the risk of exposure. In addition, the following prevention tips are from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website:
1. Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
2. Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
3. Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4. Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
6. Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
For additional information, please consult the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov, or the website of the World Health Organization at http://www.who.int. The U.S. Embassy will also post additional information as it becomes available at: http://www.usembassy-mexico.gov.

RE: San Miguel - Melaque--Nogales

It would depend on how long I'd been driving. Thru Colima is a little more relaxing .... but 80 is mostly downhiil in that direction

RE: San Miguel - Melaque--Nogales

After Guad you have the option of #54 thru Colima which is a better road with about 4 toll sections. Not much much longer than #80. 2.5-3 days to the border from Melaque going up 200 thru Vallarta

Trampas Ratones does work .... but better with a piece of cookie or peanut butter in the middle. With the old snap trap at least the mice were dead in the morning .... with Trampas Ratones, probably not
