RE: So just how did you come up with your screen name here???

Ours is a combo of our first names. Not hugely original but easy to remember.

RE: At the moment, just an idea

I agree with the advice given about what airport to fly into and what to see. I personally would not recommend Cruise America. We used them once and it was awful.

RE: Very first RV trip.

Cool looking MH. Glad your first trip out went well. LOL about your age. DH and I find that we are slowly becoming the average age when we RV. In a few more years I suppose we will be on the older end of the spectrum. The good thing about that is we'll be retired.

RE: What did you do to your TT or FW today?

I got my Halloween decorations gathered up for our trip next week. Have to make sure the trailer looks spooky.

RE: Cresent City Ca to Yosemite NP

I would recommend that you take 101 south to Willits and then a few miles further on 101 towards Ukiah and catch hwy 20 towards Clear lake and over to I 5 at Williams. Then south on I 5 to Stockton where you should take Hwy 4 East (cross town freeway), and catch Hwy 99 south to Merced and take Hwy 140 into yosemite. there was a rock slide on Hwy 140 couple of years ago but they have made new bridges across the Merced river to bypass the slide. The bridges are one way and controlled by traffic lights, at most maybe a 5 minute delay. To me this is the best route for your RV and keeps you out of most of the traffic associated with the other routes.
On Edit for sure stay off of hwy 36, I don't like hwy 299 either for RV travel,it goes up and down 5 passes and has some tight turns and narrow places, that is why I always use Hwy 20 to get from Hwy101 to I 5
That is also a great route. Hwy 101 between Windsor and Novato can be heavily congested or just plain congested, depending on the time of day you are traveling.

RE: Cresent City Ca to Yosemite NP

When traveling between 1-80 to Hwy 101, we prefer to take Hwy 37. It is much easier when towing as it is not as twisty/curvy as 12.
When on I-80, take the Hwy 12 exit in Fairfield and follow it to I-5 in Lodi. Very easy for towing. Or, you could head to Hwy 99 (also in Lodi) if you prefer to stay off the interstate.

RE: CA-49, California

Thank you for the info regarding Hwy 49 between Mariposa and Groveland. It spared us a lot of headache.
In September DH and I are traveling with another couple to Visalia, Mariposa and the Plymouth to meet up with friends. Our FW is 26ft and the other couple's is 32ft. The question I have is about the route from Mariposa to Plymouth. What is the best way to go? I was looking at the map and it appears that Hwy 140 out of Mariposa to 99 to 12 to 88 to 49 would be the easiest. Are there some alternates that would work better? Thanks for your help! :)

RE: Kudos to Les Schwab

Just went to LS to get new tires on our FW. Excellent service. We have found that not all tire dealers are willing to install tires on trailers. Les Schwab was able to accommodate our schedule and had the tires in stock.

RE: California in September

Yosemite, Kings Canyon & Sequoia Park and Big Trees will be open. It is a wonderful time of year to visit those areas.
We will be in the Yosemite area at the end of September are are staying at the Yosemite West/Mariposa KOA. The rate is fair and it is close to the park. We are also visiting the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad http://www.ymsprr.com/on that trip.

This is why I love to RV

Hanging out at the FW for the weekend. We took it to a KOA about an hour from our house and not far from where we both work. DH has to work today but it is my regular day off. ;) I have spent the day doing nothing. Ok, I did wash the breakfast dishes, make the bed and walk the dogs. But that is it. It has been wonderful. Now, I know I could do nothing at home, but for some reason it is so much better at the trailer. The simplicity is what I love.

RE: Door Hand rail. Security issue.

When the latch to our screen broke it was nice to have the the handle be able to fold to keep the screen closed. That being said, I pity the fool who would do such a thing to me. There would be H-E-Double Toothpicks to pay. Mmmm, false imprisonment comes to mind.....

RE: What would you do?

The Williams area office has a big territory to cover and, if they are lucky, have four officers working at that time of day. I am sure they sent someone to respond, but if they were on the far end of their area it could take a bit to get there. I have a few friends who are CHP and know from conversations over the years that calls such as yours would not be ignored. You did the right thing by calling it in.

RE: Yes....it's still cheaper vacation......

We have figured out it is less expensive to RV to many places. The monthly payment on the trailer, the site fees and fuel end up being less than the cost to stay in a hotel - most times. Also, if we are taking time off work to travel, the cost savings of not commuting offsets our fuel cost for the trip. Much easier to just throw some clothes in it and go. Plus, I like being able to have my little piece of home to retire to at the end of the day.

RE: Loading the new TT.

We had a HTT for three years before getting a FW. With the HTT we were at max weight for towing and were very careful about what packed. In fact, DH and I would joke about how "weight was an issue" when it came justifying drinking the last beer or eating the last of the snacks. We don't need to be as careful with the FW. In going through it the other day, I realized I have a lot of room for more stuff. Haha! That scared DH. I don't handle clutter well so I only keep in the trailer stuff I need.
