RE: Labor charges forcing sale

Motorhoming/RVing is already a costly luxury. The steady rise of the cost of a new one, and ensuing costs on top of that, simply means that it will become a luxury which only the richer people will be able to afford. And this will shrink the industry some more. To put it another way, I have seen the best of times. yes cloud dancer we sure have seen the BEST of times and that i am thankful for. 30 plus years has given us and the family much enjoyment and great memories in the RV life style. Now just hope we can still have some good times in the homebody life style, LOL.

RE: Labor charges forcing sale

5 service places in Bullhead city, all excellent reviews. rvservice reviews thanks jetboater, i had checked all of them, 3 are no longer in business, one did not make house calls and the other was the highest cost. things are very limited here. you would think with all the snowbirds and campgrounds here that there would be many in the repair business but i guess like everything the economy has hurt them plus its a very seasonal area for that type of work. a few used rv sales places but no actual new rv dealers anywhere in this section

RE: Labor charges forcing sale

thanks for all the suggestions and ideas. we just moved recently to bullhead city az and repair shops or private mechanics are scarce. actually there is not even a dealer here other than paul evertts but they don't do repairs here. so the prices i got are all from private repair guys and you are lucky to get them to come especially now with all the snowbirds arriving. yes i was use to doing my own maintenance for many years and when this rig was newer things were not breaking as often or were still under warranty. but now with arthritis, pinched nerve, rotor cup acting up and a few other things i just can't crawl under the rig anymore or bend or even stand for any period of time. so i don't have much of a choice anymore but to pay the piper and the piper is winning. my biggest concern is that something will go wrong with the engine (workhorse) and than i will be in big trouble. oh well, maybe somedAY WE WILL HIT THE LOTTERY, lol and get back into the rv lifestyle. we keep playing... my biggest concern is that we were use to traveling cross country 2 times a year among many other trips to visit the kids, but now we will start to become homebodies and i just hope that we can adjust to this life style. i am sure it won't be easy. thanks again

Labor charges forcing sale

after 30 plus years of rving we are being forced to sell our MH due to the high cost of labor for repairs. our coach is 10 years old and of course things are starting to deteriorate and need replacing. but the cost that rv repair people and shops is just getting ridiculous. our latest failure was a solenoid for the aux. battery. we could not start the unit so had to have a repair shop come to the house. they charged a 70.00 trip charge (even though there shop was less than a mile away) took them 3 hours to find the problem at 120.00 per hour (took him a 1/2 just to get his tools together between phone calls). had to order the part (2 weeks) than came to install it with another 70.00 trip charge and took them a 1 1/2 hours to complete the job again at a 120.00 a hour labor. and from some that i spoke to 120.00 was a good price for labor, huh?????? so it cost me a total of 540.00 in labor, 140.00 in trip charges to replace a 50.00 solenoid for a grand total of 730.00. these guys have no mercy. took it to get a oil change and grease (gaser) labor 110.00 for a hour and 90.00 for parts, so after tax 200.00 plus dollars for a oil change that i use to be able to do myself for under 50.00... during the past 10 months these are 2 of 5 items that broke down on the unit for a total of 2720.00 in labor and trip charges and a grand total of a big 290.00 in parts. and thank goodness these things all broke down while at home. if we were traveling god knows what it would have cost us being at the mercy of these repair shops. i realize everyone wants to make money but 140.00 for trip charges for driving under 2 miles???? i know we will be needing tires and batteries in the next year which will be another 2500.00 to 3000.00 for tires and probably 600.00 for batts installed plus who knows what else might go wrong, its at the point that labor fees are just to costly and most of the stuff i just can't perform myself anymore or don't have the knowledge to do. so before we get stuck with more repairs and outrageous bills we just decided (reluctantly) to sell it and give up the lifestyle that we loved for many years. but my pension just can't keep up with the cost of owning a RV anymore plus all the other expenses of traveling (gas etc). has anyone else been having similar problems??

How difficult to chANGE THE ENGINE BATTERY??

my engine battery on our 04 fleetwood gaser is on its last leg. its a interstate 770cranking amps 12 volt. i see 3 heavy duty cables connected to the positive side terminal and one cable to the side negative terminal. checked with a couple repair centers and they want 150.00 to change it plus the cost of the new battery. is this a simple job as far just unscrewing the pos and neg cables removing the old and reinstalling the cables or is there other things i should be aware of? and tricks anyone can offer and is there a order as to which cable should be removed first and installed first? thanks for any help.

RE: Younger Rv'ers VS older Rv'ers won't give us the time of day

been rving for 40 years and there is DIFFIDENTLY a difference in friendliness between years ago and now and not for the better. years ago, even as little as 10 years people were friendly and always stopped and talked, a drink at night etc etc. lately no matter where we go and we travel the entire US, people just run in their rv's at night or pretend they are doing something while turning away when they see people down the street. a total different class of rv'ers for sure. why????? not really sure, maybe people are more afraid to get involved or maybe want to be on the ole internet more, whatever the reason it is different, IMO.

RE: Has Anyone have to Protect Themselves with a weapon

being a LEO for 33years the answer is yes but if you mean while rving yes again. while at a rest area in OK. taking a break was approached at the rv door by a guy asking for money. I told him no and to please leave, well he grabbed open the door and brandished a knife and this time demanded money. since i carry ALL THE TIME,especially while traveling no matter where, I pulled my 9MM from my hip holster and pointed it at his head and politely asked him to leave. He did make a small aggressive motion towards me and the hammer was just about ready to fall and he must have come to his senses and he turned and took off like a deer on opening day. Sure would have put a damper on our vacation since it was only the second day of the trip, you know with all that paperwork and stuff. so we were on our way shortly after.

RE: Major Towing Damage Now With video

just read your post and not sure if its to late but the first thing you should have done if you didn't already was to call the police and have a police report (accident report) filed to immortalize the event and names of all involved. if you didn't i would call them and see if you still can

RE: Battery solenoid reset???? (UPDATE))))))))))))

went to the storage unit over the weekend to start the motor and for the heck of it i hit the switch for the aux. batts and bingo, they came on.... so now my question is. i left the switch on so should they stay on now until if i ever shut them down again with the switch? i am moving in a few days and the new place has rv hook ups so it will be plugged in for now on when not in use to keep the batts charged. any ideas of why the switch turned them on???

RE: Battery solenoid reset???? (UPDATE))))))))))))

I have never found a reset buton that would fix a battery disconnect not activating. Can you hear a click at all? The odds are it is the solenoid that is bad. Doug i don't hear any click when i hit the switch and i believe i found the solenoid but its behind the master board in the engine compartment and i am kind of leary about removing the entire board and afraid i might screw it up more than just the solenoid. thanks doug

Battery solenoid reset???? (UPDATE))))))))))))

my momentary switch will not turn on my house batteries. its a 2004 fleetwood storm and the battery solenoid is up front in the engine compartment in a big black box with many other fuses. on the schematic it says that there is a reset button on top of the battery disconnect fuse box. looking at this picture can anyone give me a idea of where that reset might be? thanks http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5341/7405641130_c112faf8c3_m.jpg height=480 width=640 will post another pic also

RE: Sigma rocker switch????? (UPDATE)

You might check the relay/solenoid while you are waiting on the switch. I have had a couple of them go bad but never the switch. It should be close to your battery bank and look something like this. http://www.pacificrvparts.com/ProductDetail.asp?PID=41968&SID=98&DID=219&CID=717 my 2 6 volt batts are under the steps by the door. never saw anything like that but will take another look around. its a fleetwood 2004 storm m/h, maybe some one will have a idea where it might be. thanks

RE: Sigma rocker switch????? (UPDATE)
