RE: Generators

I bought a Honda 3000 and had manual switch installed on the panel box in the house. I made a plug that I hook the generator to the house with, turn all the breakers off I won't use and flip the manual switch cutting of Line power and putting me on generator power. It being the 'overpriced' model I don't worry about electronic devices in the house I may choose to use. I can't run the AC obviously but it will power the furnace blower and keep me from freezing and busting pipes in the winter. I don't have to string extension cords around for the fridge and freezer and my wife can have lights in the bathroom and use her hair dryer. Like in your camper you have to manage power but it will get us through a few days. I'd get a bigger generator down the road for my toyhauler the 3000 is enough so I went with it for my dual use power supply.

RE: Extended Cab vs. Crew Cab?

I just got my first pick up and got the 4 door, my kids now have their own doors and love it (age 9/10) I did with mine as well. I suspect your kids are like mine and will not get smaller. Another vote for the crew cab for me.

RE: Ft Pickens Campground, Pensacola

We've got a spot in the A loop reserved our next trip. We stayed on the E loop I think it was last time. It was more open over there but there was room enough. My truck and trailer barely fit on the pad though. The park website has the pad length for each spot so just look through them. My kids were disappointed in not being back on the "main" side of the campground. They enjoyed riding their bikes over there. The Fish House in Pensacola is fantastic. I highly recommend it as well as McGuires Irish Pub. Fantastic meals at both. Gulf Breeze has a Publix and a Walmart Marketplace (first of these I've seen.....mostly grocery) but are a bit of a drive.

RE: Back feeding generator into house.

With the setup I mentioned I can't cook on the stove or dry clothes or run my AC. My intent is to keep food in fridge/freezers going, and power the furnace in the winter (electric ignition plus fan) with added power for TV if working, radio, hair dryer for wife etc. Power management is important I'd turn all breakers off except were the fridge/freezers are pluged in and furnace ones and then turn on or off as needed others to keep the load down.

RE: Back feeding generator into house.

I have a manual transfer switch installed with a 30amp breaker that is connected to an outlet outside that my generator plugs into. The manual transfer switch is just a piece of sheet metal that slides up for the 30amp to be turn on allowing power into the box from the generator and it requires the main be turned off so it can slide up. If the OP does what he intended and turns off the main his concern is the wiring and can it handle the load. The line going from my panel box to the outside connecting box is at least as thick as the 30amp line for my RV. If he has room for the 5th wheel in the driveway then that is the best and safest option with some extension cords for fridge/freezers. I don't have that option so I had a friend install the outside outlet and switch.

RE: Setting up homebase hook-ups thread/equipment sources?

Did you do the septic install yourself or contract it out? I've pondered this for some land I own but am wondering if the cost is worth it vs using a campground down the road.....obviously the campground down the road is going to be a lot cheaper.

RE: Setting up homebase hook-ups thread/equipment sources?

I'm curious what you did for the dump stations? One septic tank or three? I've always wonders how a septic system would handle RV dumping.

RE: 4WD or 2WD

Camped at two state parks this summer. Both sites I backed up a gravel incline and was slipping. I put it in 4x4 and in we went. I'm not in a area where we get snow all the time but we do get snow and I work at a hospital so not going to work isn't an option. I got the 4x4 for safe work driving when it is bad and was sure glad to have it getting into those camping spots. I'd get the 4x4.

RE: Gas vs Diesel

in the OP case he is definitely only using this to tow and personal use. Math is math ,lets say we drove the average 12000 miles a year and were towing the whole time. Diesels are getting 12mpg and gas I will say low at 9mpg.even at this unreal worst scenario it would still take you 6 years to pay off the costs of the engine option. But in reality the gas would likely get the same or better MPG not towing which is the bulk of the driving. Therefore you would never see the savings of spending 7000 for the option. That was it for me. Quite happy with my 6.0 gas with 4.10. I'll get a diesel and not sweat the extra money it costs when I get the big 5th wheel toy hauler I dream of.

RE: For those with GM 2500 HD with 6.0 gasser...

Pulling 8500-9000 I'd guess with mine. I should get it weighed sometime with all my stuff in it. That ~4000 rev of the engine is a hearty roar. To me it is sounds like what it was built to do. I've not batted an eye at the rpm's. I do watch my transmission and engine temps and those are just fine. I pass a lot of trucks with trailers on the climb and have them pass me down hill or on the flats. I stay at 62 pretty much all the time, but go slower on the downhill if the grade is steeper and there are turns.

RE: GM 6.0 towing

12 6.0 w/4.10 towed from Ohio to Florida also to D.C. 26ft trailer ~8500 lbs. No problems with the hills/mountains. I set cruise on 62 and go. I'm seeing ~7 towing and 12.5 without. I don't go on long highway trips but it doesn't seem to me that it matters if I'm city or highway driving with the 4.10. It is the RPMs drinking the gas after all. I love it. If I ever get that monster 5th wheel toy hauler I want I'd have to go diesel but I'm loving my 6.0 2500 gasser.

RE: honda eu3000ise overloaded suggestions for a replacement??

x2 on water heater. My 3000 does fine with my A/C but it tripped once. I decided to switch the WH to gas and no more problems. I guess the fridge/freezer on gas would ease the load even more.

I68 through Maryland or I70 through PA

From Columbus to DC area. A friend tells me 68 has more climbs but is a less traveled and beautiful drive. 70 is tighter and busier. What do you guys think? I'm leaning towards 68 for the views and width. The truck will take the grades.

RE: Running A/C on 20 amp line

We're doing 4 contests this year plus 1 in october that I don't plan on needing AC for. So the gas will add up. I'll see how close I get to the connection. I do have an extra 30 amp wire to extend my RV connection. From what I'm reading the adapter my get fried though..... I bought the generator for bbq and the house so I recon I'll use it for what it was purchased for (some contests only provide 10amp service).

RE: Running A/C on 20 amp line

I'm gonna be at a bbq contest were there are generators that supply "spiders" with 20amp outlets. I'll have to run ~75-100 ft of line to get to power most likely. Sounds like I may have too much voltage drop. I have a generator and at our last contest went through about 10 gallons of gas. Just debating spending the money on gas or risking an issue with the compressor down the road.

Running A/C on 20 amp line

I know folks that say it is okay as long as your not running anything else. I've also been told it will damage the AC unit. Bad idea or okay?

I saw this and wondered what the weight police would think.

Trailer looks a little nose down to me. Think it is too much weight on the tow vehicle? http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j44/dhuffjr/394745_3339797818853_1081954846_n.jpg

RE: ok here we go part 2

With the 4.10 it is rated at 13000. How do you figure that 10500 is too much for it? At that weight your getting into the range they recommend you use the Tow/Haul mode.
