RE: Pulling Heavy 5W Without Duallys

The difference is not the brakes or drive train but what the rear axle is rated in the Dodge 1 ton SRW vs DRW. The DRW Dodge gets the bigger rated axle than the SRW 3500 (and definitely bigger than the OP's 2500 with upgraded springs) does not have. A 3500 Ram new off the lot has rear GAWR of 6200 and 9350 for the SRW vs DRW respectively. This is what jimnlin is referring to with those #'s.
Dodge's pickup builder pdf is pretty trick:

RE: Split bath or enclosed bath

We've had both and both have their up's and down's. The splits give a bit more room on average but that is really floorplan dependent IMO. We went with an enclosed bath this time around b/c with children and other family we got tired of having portions of the RV "walled off" at one time or another in the last unit. On the other hand you better not need the can in an enclosed bath unless you are real friendly with the person in the shower or you have to wait! That's not much of an issue for us compared to keeping the flow from front to back open so it is just all in what you want.
Steam has never been an issue for us with either style. If your in the shower or having a #2 it is understood that the fantastic fan is ON in our house! :)

RE: We are some of the lucky ones

Keep on rollin' arizonadesertbrat! Definitely the way to do it. While my family isn't fulltiming we try to hit as much as we can on weekends and weeks at a time when we can. Fortunately we don't have too much winter downtime here in the SE. As a matter of fact we'll be setting up the fiver lakeside for 35 days starting Friday and it can't get here fast enough! WInterizing is also far from our minds as this is the best time of the year for us. Beautiful fall colors and great temps. As soon as we wrap up our stay at the foothills of the Blue Ridge mtns we'll go down to the lowcountry of SC outside of Charleston in December. (Skeeter free December!!!!!)

RE: Do any fifth wheels have this?

My experience with the basement a/c is not positive either. It has to work harder to get the air up. In hot weather it will take a bigger unit to come close to competing with the small rooftop units. Like Bob said above the best way is a/c on the roof letting the cold air dump naturally and heat from the basement to rise like it naturally wants to do. Also, I would suggest checking when you look to buy a fiver that the heat actually heats the basement area as well. Some do some don't and it's nice to know that those pipes/tanks are getting heat too.
In a non-apples-to-apples comparison my parents MH has a basement unit that looks like a residnetial unit in it and another drawback is they HAVE to use 50amp to get that puppy running. Having 2 rooftop units I can cool on 30amp comfortably and can cool really good on 50amp with both units wide open.
Spending time in both at the beach, their unit is MUCH quieter than my rooftops but my unit was much cooler and had better air circulation I felt.

RE: I need help right now,Please and thank you

I am going to have to figure out how to add a signature to the bottom so that everyone can see what our tv is. We are still looking for a unit but we know that we are not going over 13k loaded. We are looking at one but haven't made a deal on it yet. We have a 2007 duramax diesel 6.6 and the reason for not going over 13k loaded Again thanks for your fast replys. Barb and Buddy
Welcome to the board. Now go get a Fiver! The Duramax is getting bored!

RE: GET YOURSELF WEIGHED!!

I weighed my truck and 5th wheel before the initial trip in 2006. The scales were about 1 mile from the dealer. It is clear that not many do weigh their rigs--after I weighed the F350 at 8000lbs, the scale operator asked if I had a "heavy weight" truck! I would guess, he has not had alot of business at the scales for RVers.
Few and far between. The scale operator kept asking me for my commercial #'s and I kept replying I was private not-for-hire as evidenced by the 7-month old ready to get to the beach!!!

RE: UPDATE! Not good I give up!

You should get a dog poop scooper and return the repair part they left in your toilet. Terrible story to hear but it does make me thankful for boards like this to get the info out there. Maybe if you're lucky some vandals will set fire to it one night and you can get rid of the insured flexing burden (kidding)! Best of luck resolving it and hang in there.

RE: 2007 Tundra Tow Vehicle with 34 foot trailer: the numbers.

I would advise you to hit the scales one last time when you are filling up for fuel at the truck stop on the way to your destination. The weight will continue to go up until the back axle of that fiver is on the road! There's always someone else in the family carrying stuff on when your not looking.
The Tundra is a very nice truck no doubt but the almost 3/4 ton hype is just that, don't get caught in an unsafe position because of marketing. The whole notion of comparing it at a track to an F250 with a 10k trailer is pointless as they will both do a fine job. The disparity comes when the load is applied over the comparitively small(in comparison to 3/4 ton variants) rear axle. Conventional towing is a completely different animal than having a pin directly over the rear axle. Airbags are nice but they relieve stress on springs only; not that semi-floating rear axle itself. A false sense of security as the rig looks really pretty and level when loaded up but the weight is still riding down the road on an axle that could potentially be begging for mercy.

RE: Are new/used Duramaxs' getting any less expensive?

I have a friend who is encouraging me to look for a new/used, Chev/GMC Duramax. He says that they are now less expensive and easier to find than they were because of the current economy.
Is this true? Are there any friend of a friend who is a dealer out there that has the real scoup?
Now is the time to buy ANY diesel IMO if you need/want it; but it is true that it was an even better buyer's market when diesel was $4 a gallon, but don't worry summer is just around the corner. I am sure we'll have a magical oil crisis in time for everyones summer travels. :h
Lots of folks that didn't really need one now finding their finances no longer able to support the payments of a truck that they aren't using to it's potential. That's how I picked mine up too; they even threw in the travel trailer to go with it! The key to a good deal is not being in a rush, and having the finances ready so that when the opportunity does come along you can move quick.

RE: LCD TVs, keep em in or pull them out?

One more vote for leave it in and don't worry about it. I leave 2 in mine all the time. Been in there from 0 degrees to 110 degrees and works fine. Works much better than I do in 0 or 110 degree temps!!!

RE: Buying first 5er - Open Range 399BHS

Oz73 the first thing that came to mind was wow your 1st 5'er and it's BIG at 38' or so but guess what? I thought about it and I did the same thing! Ours is right at 37' and we moved to it from a 33' TT. Turned out to be no big deal so I just wanted to tell you congrats and enjoy! The length was a major concern but that overlap in the bed really helps and I am ALWAYS amazed at my 5'er when I've got that bad boy at about 90 degrees to my truck turning around! I can put that big 5'er anywhere I put that 33' TT.
My only advice is don't get taken on the little items. Vent covers, hoses, cords all of the little things should be included IMO. You're in NC I see so get the biggest AC units that are available for it. Todays units are very well insulated but it is nice to not have the AC run around the clock to cool a unit down when it's time to do so. They are sooooo nice at the beach in the dead of summer!

RE: Anyone else having trouble getting financing for new RV???

Didn't have any probs finding lenders when we bought in August. Just re-fi'd our house 2 weeks ago, again no probs and uber low rates. Both my wife and I are well into the 700's. However, I own a small business and that usually scares lenders to death being self-employed so I don't see the lending market being bad at all.
It's not all about the credit score too though as there are tons of other factors. You could have a decent score and clean history but if you've got too much revolving credit you are not gonna get financed. Having credit cards with zero balances is better than ones that are maxxed out but having the ability to easily dip into that debt counts against your ability to borrow more for example.

RE: Got my first "Did you buy it here?" experience

There is something here that those of you who are still trying to justify the dealers outrageous charge should consider.
When the OP contacted Keystone about the matter he was told by Keystone "the work should have been submitted as warranty work from the beginning."
This means either that the dealer was not aware of Keystones warranty policies OR he was just trying to cheat the OP.
Either of the above makes the dealer a POOR dealer. A GOOD dealer of any product will know and uphold a manufacturers warranty. A GOOD dealer will always err on the side of the customer, especially on such a trivial repair of replacing a blown fuse.
Let's face it, the OP was dealing with not only a poor dealer, but most likely an unscrupulous one.
ryoung
I tend to fall on this side of the fence. I don't have a problem with the minimum hourly rate. The inherent issue is a KEYSTONE dealer not contacting KEYSTONE for authorization when a 2009 KEYSTONE showed up inoperable. This is a 2009 for cryin out loud, the owner should have signed a a paper acknowledging the work that was performed and the dealer should have submitted a claim for $101 to Keystone.
The hourly rate of $100 is not for the guy at the coffee machine it's $100/hr towards the operating costs of the company. It is not uncommon in the engineering service industry to see minimum charges of $250 or more for consultations/site meetings etc. However, the hourly rate should have been between the dealer and the manufacturer. Looks to me like someone (serivce manager) wanted the cash up front instead of waiting on Keystone to reimburse them months later; or they may have been aiming for the moon and gonna try for both!!! Voila a $202 fuse change. :E

RE: Interstate security issues??

I didn't think 911 worked from cell phones. I guess it depends on where you are registered?
Like everyone else here I never had a problem. I have seen some strange things go on but it is none of my business. And I don't walk around knocking on the door at any 18-wheelers either. I keep my doors locked and my hands in my own pockets.
It works pretty good now but I always make a note of the Highway Patrol's direct number that is posted at almost every state line as I enter it. For instance here in SC it is *47 (which is *HP). Most places have enhanced-911 that will route your call to whoever has jurisdiction over the tower your phone is using. It's not perfect but it is better than nothing. Unfortunately when help is needed immediately law enforcement is minutes away. Not their fault; just the nature of the beast. Those can be long minutes so keep your head up!
