RE: eastern sierra 395 overnight needed

We have stayed in one of the Brown's lots at Christmas time, not much open and you register and leave check/cash in envelope you drop. Have also stayed at Boulder creek either is fine for overnight. Used to travel through going to in-laws that lived in Elko and then when son was stationed at Mountain Home ID>

RE: renting out your RV

We did it with a previous rig but it was bought with that intent and allowed us to have a unit when we needed it without the huge cost for most of the year. Now we use it to much to even think about renting this one out.

RE: Typical Fuel Mileage You Get With Your Gas or Diesel Class A

On a side note, how do you tow your BMW? I didn't think it could be towed with a dolly or four down since it is rear wheel drive. Our 323 is a 5 speed stick, I tow it on a dolly because it was going to be stupid expensive have a baseplate custom made for it. Put in neutral release the brake and go. Don't forget to release the brake! DAMHIK!! :S

RE: Taking Kayaks

You should be able to carry on the fit at least with some creativity if not stock rack. Here is our BMW 323i convertible with our kayak a Malibu two person. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7481/16165533126_ebf15c772c_m.jpg

RE: Typical Fuel Mileage You Get With Your Gas or Diesel Class A

One to keep in mind is most of us with class A's tow a more economical vehicle that we do all our exploring and touristy things in. So while my 22K Dolphin averages around 7 the bmw I tow averages 22 exploring. What does your dually get when running naked? For most of us we spend more miles exploring than moving the house, avg. obviously some days the mileage is all house moving.

RE: palm springs CA area

TT Palm Springs is pretty full this year, we will be there last 2 weeks in Jan. We have also stayed at Caliente Hot Springs and really enjoyed it. BTW CHS takes passport to help keep costs down.

RE: Bakersfield to Las Vegas by way of Death Valley

Check this link often before you leave and while you are gone for current conditions. Caltrans Highway condition Highway 58 towards Barstow and then either highway 14 to 395 or stay on 58 to 395. This storm is really freaky with snow down to 2K level which includes most mountains in the south and the Antelope valley so getting out of the central valley and then across the high desert may be an adventure in itself! They are warning people to take extra precautions in Pasadena tomorrow night for the parade as they are expecting temps as low as 28!!! Be careful and take your time.

RE: Chassis batteries needed charging.

Couple things make sure you check the water in the chassis battery, low water will cause faster discharge. 2 make sure and check voltage 10-30 minutes after you disconnect the charger as the battery will show an artificial level right after disconnecting. 3rd if you are really drawing it down that fast either you are using something you don't realize is attached to chassis not the house batteries or something could be miswired causing the extra draw. As Mr. Wizard stated some have an interconnect some don't and some are just broke.

RE: 1st time RV project?

couple of things that will make a big difference in the answer, does he have a place to work on it? If in an area with 4 seasons preferably enclosed and heated. Has he ever tackled projects that make up the different areas, cabinet making, upholstery, plumbing etc? The one in your link should be drive system solid but even the present owner states it needs a refresh of the interior and with the curved walls and ceiling everything will be custom made which equates to time and dollars. Thirdly does he have the patience this could easily take a year or more depending on time available and $$ available.

RE: FuelBook

Looks more geared to commercial drivers and fleets and truck stops. GasBuddy is my tool of choice and is kept up by users and includes last date and time updated.

RE: CA camping trip being planned South Coastal areas

Above El Capitan but before Flying flags is Refugio state park, neither of these parks have hookups and they also fill quickly for weekends all year round. Across the freeway is a El Capitan private park that is kind of pricey but full hookups and pool or spa I believe. In the Ventura area up in the canyon, rt 33, is Lake Casitas which should be very nice that time of year with dry through full hookups.

RE: Port San Luis (Avila Beach) RV camping

If not being on the ocean or at least very close is not a requirement check out Lopez Lake in Arroyo Grande. County park tucked up into the canyon and they have many fhc sites. Have been there during the summer but not winter yet. Jan - Mar is breeding time for the bald eagles that nest in the park during winter.

RE: Need a ride..

Know anyone from the base that is in motor T? You need someone with that level or greater so anyone with a license for 6X6 or above would qualify.

RE: Canyon RV Park in Anaheim, CA

March to June should be real nice and the group of us that rally there are there in April and trees are not usually too big of an issue. Hasn't really heated up yet. Depending on the site you have on the trees. Some areas more shaded than others.

RE: RV parks do not honor advertised rate when booking?

Never experienced this and we have stayed many times at Flying Flags, BUT our reservations are seldom even months in advance. One of the challenges is the long lead time. They could just say we take reservations up to 90 days out and guarantee the rate or they will hold a slot for you for up to a year but subject to change. Things like our draught that drove up water casts for everyone they can't foresee a year in advance.

RE: Purchasing a new class A

Well with THAT definition mine is your perfect rig! LOL You will be going old enough that the orphan factor is irrelevant and for the buck National made great units. As others have stated though go spend time sitting in and moving around in motorhomes to see how the floorplan works for you. That includes lay down on the bed, can you with the slide in? Is that important to YOU. Almost everything any of us tell you has to be weighed against what is important to YOU and even more to your spouse! :B

RE: Does buying that 45' rig do it for you?

One is even if you think you know until you live in one for awhile you won't know how big is big enough, and it will always be a trade off just like with a S&B. We decided the 36' gasser is kind of small after spending 5 weeks in Portland a year and a half ago for the birth of our first GK. 4 weeks of rain and rained sometime during every day of the other week. 36 and 2 slides are fine when we live outside most of the time, but stuck in side on dark rainy days it was getting very small! One other reason for a move up is at least a 3rd slide, amazing the extra room with opposing slides in the front and the higher carrying capacity. Be careful on this last one. We were looking at a 40' coach last spring that when I found the weight rating placard found out I would only gain 500-700 lbs of carrying capacity while increasing the GVWR by 12K. Now this rig did not have a tag but still not enough to spend the big dollars for a couple of feet and small weight capacity increase.

RE: RV membership

The answer is "depends" just like for a condo, a lake cabin or any other alternate spot to stay. If you use it they are incredible. If not then a giant waste of money. We have the original zone membership which gives us the whole west including a park in Canada. We pay $450 a year in dues and no fee when we bought it. This year looks to be light use as we have been home for almost 5 months due to various reasons. Our year starts in June, we will only use about 50-60 nights this year. Past 3 years before we averaged 80 nights a year. That keeps our per night pretty low. We can be in a park for up to 14 nights then have to be out of the system for 7 nights. We can also stay up to 4 nights at a park and move immediately to another park and never leave the system. Almost never have a problem getting into a park when we want so for us it works. Look at where the parks are located and if you want to go there if not don't waste your money.
