RE: Does buying that 45' rig do it for you?

One is even if you think you know until you live in one for awhile you won't know how big is big enough, and it will always be a trade off just like with a S&B. We decided the 36' gasser is kind of small after spending 5 weeks in Portland a year and a half ago for the birth of our first GK. 4 weeks of rain and rained sometime during every day of the other week. 36 and 2 slides are fine when we live outside most of the time, but stuck in side on dark rainy days it was getting very small! One other reason for a move up is at least a 3rd slide, amazing the extra room with opposing slides in the front and the higher carrying capacity. Be careful on this last one. We were looking at a 40' coach last spring that when I found the weight rating placard found out I would only gain 500-700 lbs of carrying capacity while increasing the GVWR by 12K. Now this rig did not have a tag but still not enough to spend the big dollars for a couple of feet and small weight capacity increase.

RE: RV membership

The answer is "depends" just like for a condo, a lake cabin or any other alternate spot to stay. If you use it they are incredible. If not then a giant waste of money. We have the original zone membership which gives us the whole west including a park in Canada. We pay $450 a year in dues and no fee when we bought it. This year looks to be light use as we have been home for almost 5 months due to various reasons. Our year starts in June, we will only use about 50-60 nights this year. Past 3 years before we averaged 80 nights a year. That keeps our per night pretty low. We can be in a park for up to 14 nights then have to be out of the system for 7 nights. We can also stay up to 4 nights at a park and move immediately to another park and never leave the system. Almost never have a problem getting into a park when we want so for us it works. Look at where the parks are located and if you want to go there if not don't waste your money.

RE: "New" 2013 Hurricane 32A

We bought our 06 Dolphin as 1 year old "new" unit with around 300 miles on the clock. Got full warranty on everything. The batteries tanked after 3 years of use, not bad considering the abuse they get on a lot. The tires, Michelins, started cracking after 6 years of owning an Michelin adjusted them crediting almost the full price equivalent of 1 tire of the 6. Make sure no excess wear and run it through the bluebook, we paid out the door with fancy wax job, scotchgard interior, and 7 year extended warranty $1000 below bluebook for 1 year old used coach.

RE: Insurance and Registration

Passin thru the OP is talking about registering the rv where it resides, which does not happen to be where he resides. He also stated that is where it will be used. You comment about pay Caesar, which I agree with mostly, doesn't pertain in this instance. The common one people ask is how to register somewhere else and keep it at home. The scenario the OP proposed is common in the south and east where the states are smaller and many have a vacation home, or RV, in another state. Here in the west not so much, long drive to any border to get it for a weekend! :B To the OP mowermech has the right idea.

RE: RV Hookups near Hospitals

When our granddaughter was born in Portland OR a year and a half ago discovered Providence Hospital had some sites with power and water. Free to family of patient or if patient was doing outpatient treatments as several neighbors were doing. This was a huge help as little miss Aubree came a few days early and our reservations at the park nearby didn't start for a another 2 days and they didn't have room for us.

RE: Class A or C ?

Short answer to mpg is NO, neighbor had a 30' C with same engine trans as our class A and we got about the same. Some feel more comfortable in the class C cabin as it feels more "normal" to them. Others like us like sitting up high and having that giant windshield in front of us. Also my wife has Lupus and can not sit for more than maybe an hour. A class A allows her to move around more easily and as others have stated the passenger area can become part of the living space.

RE: Best Listing of RV Parks?

rvparkreviews.com doesn't include all but does cover a lot and with user reviews. As an aside if you find a park that is not in there review it and please review any park you stay in. It keeps the site relevant and the reviews current.

RE: Veterans Day

Those kind of things are so cool. I try to say thank you to those that I can identify as past or present servicemen and women. It is very pleasant change when wearing a Marine hat to have someone tell me thank you as it is much different than at the end of Vietnam when I was in.

RE: RV propane water heater

If we are using propane for the water heater we turn it on 15-20 minutes before hot water is needed. If using electric we leave it on, especially if temps expected near freezing.

RE: First time using tow dolly

If either the deck turns, large bolt in middle of it, or the wheels turn, tierod between them do NOT unlike steering. You only want one thing pivoting, this is one of the advantages to dolly over 4 down you can lock steering take the key out and lock the door.

RE: Convert standard outlet to 12v

The iPhone uses a USB connector which is rated for a max 2.0 amp at 5volts, only an iPad requires the 2.0 amp most other adapters supply .75-1.1 amps again at 5 volts, voltage dropped inside the 12 volt to usb adapter. So you could easily pickup power from a nearby light and feed to a 12 volt receptacle.

RE: Is a motorhome "Only For The RIch"?

They are NOT cheap to own OR operate. The cost to own and operate a 5er or trailer is Waaaay less than a motorhome. It is all about ease of use, IMO. The difference in cost depends greatly on whether the tow vehicle is used on regular basis besides towing, if not the costs can get very close. People don't RV because it is the cheapest way to travel. That said our RV, a 36' class gas, gives us choices. We can eat in or out, we can camp near/on a lake or river where not hotels or motels are located, we can stay in a small little town or a fancy 5* resort. Our bed is our bed and if there is anything in it we know where it came from! :E As others have said you have to figure out what YOU want to do and then figure out what fits YOU and YOUR lifestyle not what works for someone else. You can RV relatively cheap or you can spend obscene amounts of money to RV. Note "obscene" is usually defined as more than "I" would spend! :B Kind of like speed on freeway, those going slower are slow pokes and a pain while those going faster than "me" are lunatics!!! :B

RE: Help determining if I can get a motorhome into my driveway

The Tiffin will be quite a bit shorter than your current overall, 40' 5'er+18-22' truck= somewhere near 60' vs maybe 38' including ladder. Besides with enough gas pedal applied you can get in anywhere! :B :B

RE: coast to coast membership

Many if not most parks will NOT allow you to any other membership to pay for your "out" week(s). You can use the C2C at another park but not the same park. Would not make sense to by another park membership if yours offers C2C already as the rules won't change. Now if you found a membership at your alternate location that made financial sense for your kind of use great, then be sure and check resale and verify all fees and restrictions before you fork over the cash.

RE: Top of the Grapevine, lost all air pressure!

Just a technical correction, the Grapevine is actually the section of I-5 that runs from Lebec down into the San Joaquin Valley through "Grapevine Canyon." Pretty much "the Grapevine" is from Castaic in the south to Grapevine the town in the north. Steeper going into the central valley than the Santa Clarita valley but a big hill either direction. :B

RE: Smog check - Where do you go?

I called the place that does my other cars and they did it for me. The moho's don't need the dyno so as long as the hoses for the machine can reach outside shouldn't be a big deal. They do charge a little more I think in my case it was $10 or 12 more.

RE: Thinking Diesel. Am I biting off more than I can chew?

The spare parts go with your comfort level of doing work, just like most vehicles that we own. One that may help you here is, was the prior owner a fulltimer? If so that is his house and garage, the things part timers and weekenders keep stashed in their garage the fulltimer carries with them space allowing it.
