RE: Tablet for mapping and geocaching

Thanks for all your replies! Looks like I have some more investigating to do..........

Tablet for mapping and geocaching

HOW WE DO IT PRESENTLY: RV is a 5th wheel pulled with a 1-ton Dodge diesel dually. Our trips are usually 4-8 months. DW is the navigator and has a Jotto Desk that our laptop (Windows XP) sits on. Laptop has DeLorme Street Atlas installed. While planning a trip we cut the trip into several legs, each leg to someone's house where we will stay or some major attraction. Each leg may take us 2-3 weeks to complete. We do geocaching along the way and in an area if we are staying 2 or more days. We download cache locations from Geocaching.com using Pocket Queries, then load them into the mapping program with GSAK. When we are near a cache site we use a handheld Garmin Etrex to actually locate the caches. WHAT WE'D LIKE TO DO: We'd like to use a smaller vehicle for caching locally. We feel the Dodge is too big for this. We have smaller vehicles available to use both on and off road but they have no where to easily carry the laptop......it gets too hot to sit on DW's lap. Ideally I'd like to use a 10" tablet if we can get the Street Atlas program installed on it and would be able to exchange files that we have on the laptop. A tablet might even be easier to use with the RV for navigating and caching. A different but similar mapping program might be acceptable. If anyone is doing anything similar to this I'd really appreciate any information you'd be willing to share. Thank you....... Bill & Jean theoakfolk theoakman@earthlink.net

RE: Hot water heater won't light

Thanks for all the suggestions. Took it to Gibbs RV & Service in Coos Bay, Oregon. They found a defective gas valve, replaced it and we were soon on our way again. Mama's a happy camper again!

Hot water heater won't light

I have an older Suburban DSL(?) hot water heater.....5th wheel is a 1995 model. When I turn on the switch it tries to light the gas. The gas valve doesn't open so no gas gets to the burner. It will try lighting three or four times. I pulled the wire connectors and put them back on several times thinking corrosion. Also took off the ground wire and cleaned it up. Coils still will not open the gas valve. I don't know what else to look for to cause this problem. It has worked fine all these years until a few days ago. The first time this happened I took the wire connectors off and put them back on and it started working again. A couple days ago we turned it on and it lit, then when it tried to kick on again it wouldn't light. Any suggestions??

RE: Checklist for hookup and departure - now I'm a believer!

We used a check list when we started. Now we each do our chores, then check that the other has done theirs. Yep, that's what we do also..........

RE: Water Hose

I read somewhere that the white RV hoses were made of food grade material. Don't know if that's still the case. But we fill the tank only with the white hoses. We carry a couple of two gallon plastic jugs we refill at WM's water machine when traveling and we use this for coffee, cooking, drinking, etc. This is our boondocking or dry camping method. A few years ago we talked with a maintenance man at a state park. He said they had to check their water purity every day so no worries there. We just hook up to the campground system....but still filter coffee, cooking, and drinking water with a Brita counter top filter.

RE: Changing camping plans due to conditions/ potential fires?

Ours was the first property hit by the Arizona Memorial Fire last year. We got out with the RV and small pickup stuffed with clothing. House was saved but lost a lot of equipment we couldn't take with us. Unbelievable how fast these things can move!! Fire was a couple of miles away when we left. We stopped down the road a ways and within 20-30 minutes could see our place going up in smoke. Don't take anything for granted and treat any fire with much respect.

RE: Adapter For Plugging RV Into Generator?

Our Honda 3000i also has an outlet that needs an insert and twist adapter. Ours is yellow in color....I think I got it at ACE Hardware. The generator sits at the rear of the truck bed and we've had this adapter since the gen set was new 10 or 12 years ago. The adapter has never walked away........

RE: Please wash your hands

I never thought much about this until I saw the guy in the adjacent FHU campsite dump his tanks, then turn on the fresh water spigot, take the sewer hose and stick it over the running spigot to flush it out. And of course the flush water was all over the campsite. Told the next camper into the site about this and out came the spray bottle of bleach. Then there was the guy in a huge, new class A with one of those sewer hose connectors that expand into the sewer pipe and seal it. Unfortunately he was talking to his buddy and forgot to seal it. When he opened the black tank valve the hose end rose up like a cobra and sprayed******all over everything within five or six feet. Fortunately we were parked a couple sites away. You just can't fix stupid...... We also have one of those gray colored hoses from CW that we use only to rinse the sewer hose. Fresh water spigots are also a good place for birds to******on or around as they try to get a drink from the spigot. Heard about the diseases they spread this way?? Been in a hospital lately?? Ours has signs all over the place to wash your hands, even on the computer screen savers.....and hand cleaner dispensers are also every where now. You don't know who has used any facility before you...or how they've used them. I'd rather at least try to be safe than sorry....

RE: The "ice cube" trick really works.......

I don't think ice cubes would last very long in our Arizona dry heat......

RE: Georgia Welcome Centers

We're about to leave Arizona on a 6 month loop around the west, north, and midwest. Guess it will be interesting to see what we find. At least we're towing our rest area behind us....all we need is a place to put it.
