RE: Anyone ever regret upgrading

We spent nine great years in our very simple early DP ( 1993 Itasca 34' Suncruiser). It had leaf spring suspension and rode a bit hard and not much power, but it ran and ran and ran for 140,000 miles.
It was getting long in the tooth and we were ready to treat ourselves to a newer coach with modern diesel generator, airbag ride, etc, etc. But we were really worried that we would miss the reliable old girl or that we would end up with more problems than upgrades. We shopped very carefully for a coach that had only what we really wanted and not more. Ended up last summer buying a 1998 Winnebago Vectra and doing major refurbishing. Total full paint job, new upholstery, and much more. We'll never get the money out of it that we spent, but we don't intend to sell. It is exactly the coach we wanted.
And because the Itasca has a low value, we parked it beside the barn and are keeping it for a year or two to make sure the newer coach satisfies us - not everyone has the luxury of being able to keep the old RV, LOL.

RE: Route suggestions needed in Southwest

IMO the most interesting route from Bryce to Capital Reef is route 12. Lots of amazing scenery along the way and not nearly as scary as some folks make out. We have driven that route in both directions in our Class C and would not hesitate to do it again.
Mello Mike's Travelogue provides a good description of the road and has lots of pictures of points of interest.
Yes, #A12 is an amazing road, but if you don't call that 1500' section of the "Devil's Backbone" scary, you must have nerves of steel!!!

RE: Weather on the I80 in November

We have twice been in the position where taking I80 over the mountains from California in November was desirable for our travel plans. Once it was fine, once we chose to go around the mountains in CA on our way to Arizona. As others have said, a******shoot in November. Each week further into November, the bad weather will be worse.

Replacing Propane tank cost?

ANyone have to replace the propane tank in their CLass "A"?
Mine developed a small fatigue crack next to one of the mounting tabs for the tank. I am told that Manchester Tank is the supplier for many RV tanks, but they do not deal directly with a customer - only through RV dealers, etc.
ANyone know the typical cost of a new tank? What's reasonable for the installation?
I have a 1998 Winnebago Vectra 35'.

RE: Residential Refer and Inverter Size

I do this sometimes when traveling. Mine is a 2000 zantrex. Works fine. Just don't forget to go off the inverter when you get to your destination - the load will kill your batteries in a hurry!

Cummins prot eng codes

Prot eng blinking 15 times after starting 1998 Cummins ISB 5.9. Light then goes out and engine seems to run normally.
(1998 freightliner RV chassis)
Does the number of blinks have anything to do with the fault code?
Last 6 digits of VIN are 946100
Any thought? The unit was normal with no prot eng light until yesterday. Still runs fine with full power.

How to tell serious dry rot in tires?

How do you determine dangerous dry rot in RV tires? I do not believe that very minor random surface crazing is a safety issue.
And I have certainly seen clearly dangerous tires with big cracks in the sidewalls.
But how do you recognize and confirm serious dry rot issues? Relying on a repair shop is an invitation to being taken advantage of.

RE: What to expect--MPG ??

Most of the previous replies sound reasonable to me. We had a 1993 Itasca pusher with a Cummins 190HP and driving conservatively (55mph most of the time), we averaged 11.1 mpg over many thousands of miles. No towing.
We now have a 1998 Winnebago Vectra with the ISB Cummins, which is known for good mileage. Coming home to New York State from North Dakota, we averaged 10.6 MPG, no towing and prudent speeds, mostly flat interstates. I think our figures are about as good as you can get in a diesel pusher, driving very carefully.

RE: Entry Door Adjustment

We have spent quite a bit of time chasing small rattles and door noise. In addition to the latch bolt adjustment, door fit is affected by screen door bumper condition, screen door brush seal condition, entrance door weather stripping condition and possible warped screen or entrance doors (part of our problem). Look at all related issues together.

Painting over wallpaper

We have considered changing the wallpaper in our Winnebago Vectra. A local shop has suggested painting over the existing wallpaper instead, which would be fine with us as far as appearance goes.
Has anyone done this? Any issues with the wallpaper softening or lifting during the application of paint?
Other considerations?
