RE: '88 Southwind carburator not getting fuel

Had 83 Southwind that had a relay under engine cover in the left rear. Had a red button that would pop on occasion. Usually happened after chassis battery had been disconnected for storage and then reconnected. Just a possibility....

RE: Got 15 miles ... brake problems ... Mid State RV = AWESOME!

The previous owner may have been great, BUT, he did not take care of his chassis. Had he gotten the recall done back in 2010, he would have saved you all of this hassle. By neglect, he made a serious problem out of something that could have easily been taken care of, at NO COST. Why he sold you the coach, and not gotten the recall done is anyone's guess. To me he was just too lazy to bother with it and he passed a known safety issue on to the next owner.I guess we know now who the lazy one was. Cannot believe one chooses to ignore a safety recall because he hasn't experienced the problem. :S

RE: Exhaust manifold gaskets / Ford 460

Thanks Neil..... Boy your right about heat in the heads, I want to get rid of as much of that 1700 exhaust heat as possible and I sure dont want my cooling system trying to absorb it either....when running down the road Iam sure the manifolds are in the 1000 degree range..Banks hedders reduced the temp by 200 degrees.... My new system is all 2/12 with big walker mufflers. New dorman manifolds. I expect about 45 HP gain and a cooler motor. It is a true DUAL system not both running into stock type muffs and such. Once warmed and retorqued I doubt if they will ever be a problem again. tomI went to a 4 in system starting at the Y pipe and have had significant gains in performance and I definitely have a cooler running engine. Your system sounds like it will do the same.

RE: Toyo vs Hankook Tires

Being OEM doesn't mean a thing. Most, if not all OEM tires are selected because of price. Have had Toyo's and Hankooks not a lick of difference.

RE: Workhorse vs Ford

What GM is no longer making is the 8.1L Vortec V8 Which was the engine Workhorse designed for... Navistar last I knew still made Workhorse chassis. While there is a whole lot of argument as to which engine is better, Ford or GM. Most everyone agrees the Allison transmission is #1 with a gear train.Navistar sold the name and the new Workhorse plant that was built to some company that is attempting to make electric delivery vans or something like that. Navistar and Workhorse have parted company. At least that was what was in the news a couple of months ago.

RE: Poulsbo RV

They had a bad reputation over 10 years ago when I lived in WA, and they still do. For them nothing has changed.

RE: My 12V Problem Is Going To Be a Whole Lot Of Fun

Onaquest, the thing that comes to my mind is that: You can lead a horse to water but ........ I am quite sure you know the rest of the quote. I hope you are around when the day comes that I have an Intellitec problem, even though, at least according to the horse you can't diagnose from the other side.:b

RE: Power steering on workhorse chassi

I don't know if the system is the same, but on a C5500 Chevy truck chassis there is a filter in the power steering system that does need to be changed. Sometimes the simple things can get overlooked. If it plugs up, it can cause a whine.

RE: radiator remove

RLS7201 wrote this a couple of years ago regarding removal: "The radiator won't come out the bottom. It comes out the front. The drain is on the lower, right, back corner of the radiator. Get out your flash light. It's there. You'll need to remove or bend forward the transmission cooler. You probably won't be able to remove the power steering fluid cooler, just bent it forward a little. Discharge the AC and remove the condenser. Two long bolts on the top are all that holds the radiator and AC condenser. Move the power steering reservoir to the side. Remove two radiator hoses. Remove on small radiator hose on the left side. Remove the two transmission cooling lines, on the left side. Probably have to remove the rubber air damn. Lift top of radiator up and forward." While you are in there, it is a good time to replace the waterpump and anything else that comes to mind. Be careful though, the bolts holding on the pump go through the timing case cover and like to rust and break, in otherwords be gentle.:) Purchased a new one from PerformanceRadiator.Com for $459. It is a copper/brass 2 row. Most new ones you will find are actually for trucks. Good luck.

RE: air tabs

My favorite quote: "There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance -- that principle is contempt prior to investigation." Herbert Spencer - (27 April 1820 – 8 December 1903) was an English philosopher, biologist, sociologist, and prominent classical liberal political theorist of the Victorian era. We would still be living in the dark ages were it not for thinkers like him.Of course, he installed them on his carriage and it eliminated the push from passing wagons.LOL

RE: radiator remove

Just did my 97 F53 Southwind radiator, it came out the front. Since it is the same chassis and uses the same radiator I can only assume your 96 does the same.

RE: Play in pitman arm

If and when Spartan returns your call ask to talk to their parts department, I would be surprised if the part is unavailable from them.

RE: air tabs

I will accept the opinion of a friend who installed them on his 3 tractor/trailer combinations that he operates. His opinion was that he wasted his time and money. No measurable improvement in fuel economy and in his and his drivers opinions no measurable improvement in control. Now that is his opinion and I am sticking to it.

RE: Dolly wheel bearings leaking??

Have them repacked and new seals by someone who knows how and maybe they will show you how to do it. It is easy to do, just a little greasy.:B

RE: Thor quality

Thor is not considered to be among the "top tier" of manufacturers, but then again neither is their price. They must be doing something right. Haven't heard of any build problems for Thor, the same cannot be said for other manufacturers who are routinely listed as a "top tier" manufacturer.

RE: Towing... what is the cost????

Fuel cost differential of towing a toad or not, I believe is insignificant. Can't say that that is the case with setup costs to tow.

RE: AC on while driving question

We have never had to turn on roof top AC's while driving, maybe we are lucky that the dash AC has been sufficient.

RE: What presure>>>

I go by the air pressure needed for the MAXIMUM axle capacity of my coach. My fuel usage will vary/shift 500 pounds of weight around. I start travel with a full water tank and then that 500 pounds of weight is also shifted around between the grey and black tanks. We also use groceries and stock up again maybe once a week or so. Basically, weighing each corner I feel is a waste of time, since it varies daily. It also means that once any tire loses a few pounds, it is now overloaded, which is especially important on the duals. By inflating to the air pressure needed for the maximum allowable axle weight in the front and the rear, I have avoided all tire problems for many years of RV travel. I see no reason to change from what has proven to work.In the long run this is the best way and then check the tire pressure every morning you are driving.
