RE: How hot is it really in the summer. Arizona/New Mexico

If you take I40 I'd stop in Kingman overnight and pull out early the next morning, it's about 70 miles to needles and you have a pretty good grade out of Needles you'd want to hit it early, You should be able to make San Diego in about 8 hours from Kingman, or stop maybe in the Elsinore area and spend the night.
Traffic between San Diego and western Riverside county gets heavy at times early morning going south afternoons coming back, and it almost always is bad around the 15 and 215 split,

Along the river near Needles it can get over 120 I've seen 128 in Bullhead, kingman usually mid 90s Flag in the 80s. I worked in Needles for almost 4 years and lived in Kingman for almost 6.

RE: Route Suggestions, Laughlin, NV to Portland, Or

I really appreciate the education. As a new traveler I'm sure I'll be passing right by places of interest and not even know it. We're going to take off tomorrow and do the Pahrump, Lone Pine, Manzanar, Likely, Susanville Route.
I'll have to research the next leg to Portland though. I ended up on a road going from K-Falls to Susanville previously that I don't want to hit again. It was steep, windy, narrow, and not shoulder with a 6" drop off the edge of the pavement. The problem is I don't remember which road it was. If that sound familure to anyone please let me know. I'd rather do the K-Falls route because I love the drive up 97 in central Oregon.
Thanks again all, we'll have a great time on this route.
Jerry
A little off topic, but as an geocacher for 12 years I've been shown many places I would have passed up if it hadn't of been for geocaching:)

RE: Bypass L.A.

One you haven't told us is where is your destination, can change the recommendations.
By the way for either of the previous recommendations I would make this change, the 210 becomes the 30 and comes down to the 10 at Redlands. If you are planning on going up the I5 toward Bakersfield or Sac then take 10>30>215>13>58>99/5.
If going further north on the 101 then, 10>30>210>5>126>101 brings you out in Ventura avoiding most of the traffic and bigger hills.
That would be my route also 10>30>210>5>126>101. I would rather take any freeway through LA than take 138 through Palmdale
I'd have to agree with both of those above me, 10 to the 215 to the 15 to 395 to the 58 less traffic and less grades, the grapevine or I5 is up an down for miles, the other has Cajon pass and Tehachapi pass watch your speed going down to Bakersfield.
Have a safe trip whichever way you go

RE: Route along PCH - San Diego to Crescent City

It starts in Dana Point. Capistrano Beach to be exact.
Check your maps, some show it as pacific highway, others as pacific coast highway. Look just south of I8 and around Rosecrans and it goes a few miles south of Rosecrans.
It's name has been changed in a lot of places, but before I5 was built
it was one of the few ways to get to San Diego from Long Beach or the La area.

RE: Route along PCH - San Diego to Crescent City

BTW, the PCH does not go all the way to Crescent city.
It doesn't start in San Diego either.
But we can assume the OP wants to take which ever mix of CA1 and US101 is practical. Even though CA1 passes through Fort Bragg, many don't recommend that stretch.
There are numerous threads about travel on the north California coast, especially US101 from CA20 north to Oregon. CA20 is frequently recommended as the route from Central Valley to 101.
And just where does it start??????????

RE: California State Park Workcamping

We were at Caswell outside of Ripon for 3 months and did just about everything from opening and and closing the kiosk to cleaning toilets
While we were there I had my equipment operators card filled 2 different chain saws 4 different vechicles and was working on getting rated on the tractor, it was a fun time and I'm still in contact with the ranger and the docent

RE: Pismo Beach to Anaheim

101 to 126 to 5 to 210 to 605 to 5 bypass LA trafic. Yes you will hit 5 two times. Lived in that area for 55 years.
If I were to go that way I would just stay on 210 to 57 and straight into Anaheim. That way you bypass 5 altogether. Again depending on time of day you can hit some traffic on 210 around Pasadena. I actually drive that route to Orange County quite a bit as I hate 5 and 405 both. It is a few extra miles but not much and a whole lot less stressful at least in my opinion. If you time it right you can go ahead and take 101 across to 134 into Pasadena and catch 210. Last time I took my trailer to Pomona that was the route I took. Drove it at night and it was not too bad.
+1 I agree that would be the easiest way

RE: Route to Quartzite

Go to Quartzite first then on 95 to I-10 to San Diego. Once you get there you will want to spend the winter there.
You mean go south on US 95 to I-8. I-10 takes them into LA. :)
I-10 to I-15 is an easier route

RE: 89 north out of flagstaff

89 from Flag to Bitter Springs is a decent 2-3 lane with some long passing lanes for both directions. Some areas are not necessairly rough but the road has sunk and causes some 'fun' rythmic movement fore-aft of vehicles.
From Bitter Springs you get to choose 89 or 89A, do you want to go through Page or Jacob Lake? Going toward Page you have a steep climb for a couple miles then get to view Page/Lake Powell, then continue on the 2-lane to Kanab. If you go toward Jacob Lake you are served with a longer climb, a few switchbacks, and higher elevation that puts you in the Kaibab Forest. It is also a 2-lane road. This is also the way to go if you wish to see the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Time wise they are pretty similar. The Jacob Lake route is shorter in distance but slower speeds.
From Kanab/Fredonia you can continue north on 89 or head NW to Hurricane and hit the I15. You are also right next to Zions Natl Park. In a car go for 89 route for more scenery.
I grew up in Page and hunted the Kaibab Forest so if you have any more detailed questions, just ask!
Why not Durango to Grand Junction? That is a beautiful full of sights to see drive!!!
she doesn't care for the cliff side of the toad.
I was thinking 89 to 160 to 163 to 191 and hitting 70 at Crescent junction.
guess i should have gone into more detail, actually we're heading to grand junction

RE: Route from Yosemite to Williams, Az

"We are not scared of the mountains and curves, just tired. Looking for the least stressful routes. Thanks!"
With that in mind, I'd take 120 down to 395, to 58, to 15, then 40. Scenic and no stress. Have a smooth trip.

RE: San Diego to Needles CA.

Absolutely correct. 215 it is. I only spent 20 years going to AF reserves at March and my dad is buried at Riverside National Cemetery. Of course I worked Riverside CHP for a year also. Just a whole cluster of brain cells died instead of the usual one or two.
Getting old is just a real joy!!!
I also prefer I-15 to I-40 to Needles. Just not on Friday.
Ah yes the good old Nipton rd to Searchlight and then down to Needles

RE: San Diego to Needles CA.

Not much between San Diego but desert. San Diego to San Bernardino is about two hours. SB to Needles is about four hours. San Bernardino County is huge, bigger than a couple of eastern states.
May in Needles will be well over 100 degrees every day and probably 90+ at night.
There is a good air museum at March ARB right at I-15 north of Perris. Calico Ghost Town just north of Barstow. You can cut between I-40 and i-15 so you don't have to double back.
Once past Barstow on I-40 nothing but desert except Ludlow.
Run gen and house air.
Try to avoid going toward Needles on a Friday. River rats will be flocking there by the thousands but does make for some great bikini, oops I meant people watching.
I prefer I-15 to I-40 instead of I-8 to 95 route.
March Air Force base is off the 215 not the 15, the 215 splits off the 15 in Temecula and joins back at the bottom of the Cajon pass

RE: Routing San Diego to Paso Robles

Depending on where you are in San Diego, close to the I15?
I15 to 395 to 58 to the 5 then to the 46 to Paso Robles.
It's about 20 miles further but you miss all the LA traffic

I'm confused too. You state you're westbound on I-80 going to CC. Starting from where? And how did you plan to get from Laughlin to I-80? One way or the other, you'll be covering a lot of ground. -- Regards,
