RE: Subject lines - could we make them informational?

YES!
And while we're at it how about a short description of where a link will lead. Some use silliness like "HERE" or "L@@K".
And how about avoiding useless replies admonishing the original poster to "google", search" or "find". Heck, if you can't post a helpful response, why bother?
anyway, good idea. but it will never happen. ignore them. just like those that can't figure out the purpose of the 'shift' key. lol

RE: GS Logo still there with no option to get rid of it.

Notice from the explainations that to get rid of it, you have to be an "active" member of good sam. So those of us that are no longer members are stuck with the logo forever. I think it's our punishment for quitting them!
I wondered about that when I read your reply on page two.
I've started getting the renewal notices at over 6 months out. LOL! Just between you and me, there ain't no way I'm gonna...
Good luck!

RE: South Dakota Mail Forwarding -- Anyone unhappy with them?

--snip--
Since this thread is about your actual experiences, good or bad, your post is welcome. My service (Alternative Resources) forwards on everything and I handle all my registrations myself. I did enlist their help when I purchased new vehicles.
It is important for the OP to know as much about these services as possible in order to make an informed decision. They just didn't want to have to rely on testimonials on the individual businesses websites, which might be biased or not complete.
Dale
Thanks. Great point! And thanks to all those who posted helpful replies.
Negative comments about one other other mail service are out there but folks don't see them. These comments are removed. An attempt to limit this thread to only negative comments was just as wrong. Consumers need to see a balanced picture of all mail services before deciding.

RE: Viewing printed area is larger than my monitor

I don't know what's going on lately but I have to scroll left and right to read the posts since the printed area runs off the monitor. Is this something on the rv.net site or my computer settings?
I have that problem when someone posts a picture and doesn't bother to reduce the size to something manageable. If that is the case, you can turn off the pictures (a pain) or block the poster- also a pain because you have to be logged in for those preferences to take effect. Some moderators do go in and correct the picture problem.
If it is happening all the time... I don't know. It could be the ads if you're on the Good Sams portal. Until I started blocking them that portal was doing really wierd things. If your security settings are higher than most folks, this could be the problem.

RE: GS Logo still there with no option to get rid of it.

Just testing to see if I'm infected with the nasty little bugger too.
Bob
EDIT: Before posting, I looked and couldn't find any option to get rid of, opt out or even opt in the new advertising scam. I did find a box with the logo as my "#1 Friend". I deleted "him" as #1 then had to delete him again as a friend at all. Now "he" and the American flag (?) are in a new box marked "badges". I can't empty or remove that box.
Of course I may not have had a problem because the email address GS has is from an out of business ISP! :B Come to think of it, the GS spam stopped about the same time that I had to change ISPs! :B :B

RE: Lurker Pop-up

Still bugs me. One reason I've not frequented this forum as often as I used to, and migrated to other ones. Too stubborn to reprogram cookie deletion. As stubborn as the Lurker.
LOL! I use other forums more also. The trailer life portal is still (I think) still "lurker popup" free. I have most of the java nonsense turned off so I don't know if I'd see it anyway. I am also spared the garish flashing ads others seem to see.
I recently installed Avast free edition. It has a website blocker that has blocked ALL the ads from this and most other forums. It's specific so it might be able to block the lurker popup. If I see it again I'll try.
Oh, I've also set it to block the google-garbage analytics thingy. :B I hope it's working.

RE: Aggravating Pop Up!

...so WHAT I gotta do to make 'em STOP?
You can't. These little nasties have been around for some time now on all (I think) but the Trailer Life portal. You can put up with the popups, accept the stored/naughty cookies or change portals.
Loverly, ain't it.

RE: Pop up lurker ad

Get use to it as I believe we are destined to live with that headache.
LOL! It sure looks like you're right, sadly.
I'm using the Trailer Life portal and do not see the pop-up garbage. However, probably due to my higher security settings, I can't post there- heck, I can't even log in if I try :?.
I can log in and post from the Good Sams portal with the same security settings. I use the G.S. portal as a seperate "window" for posting.
Good Luck,

RE: Can't see full posts

David,
I have the same problem on the Good Sams portal using IEX. I figured it had something to do with my security settings (no stored/ nasty cookies, no Active-X, no java, and I try to avoid as much google-garbage as possible).
Try the Trailer Life portal. You should be able to read the threads. However I'm unable to log in to reply on the TL portal so I just use Good Sams as a "window" for replies. All in all, a real pain in the...

RE: AVG Anti-Virus need to Upgrade?

I have been running the Free version of AVG Anti-Virus for over a year now with no problems whatsoever.
I keep getting emails asking is I want to upgrade to the paid version.
What do you all have to say about it. Is it a good idea or necessary?
Thanks for your input.
I'm nearing the end of my 2 year paid AVG subsription and I'll never give them another dime. On my XP machine, the 8.5 upgrade is too slow and resource hungry to be usable. Version 7.5 (the one I purchased) was great.
IF you leave you computer on all night to be scanned AND it doesn't crash- maybe 8.5 is OK. I suppose it might work OK on a new really fast Vista machine with loads of memory. Oh, AVG's tech support is, like most places nowdays, non-existant.
There's another thread with a couple(?) recommendations for other "pay" programs that offer the speed of the older AVG. Most of those who posted still like the AVG product but I don't know what OS most are using. Other thread.
f-prot looks like what I'll be trying next.

RE: New Here & A Few Questions

Using your 1 ton van as a tow vehicle might well be your best bet. Try looking up the VIN. Here is one site:
http://www.decodethis.com/
Often this provides more information than the weight sticker on the vehicle. For instance you may have a transmission cooler or other options already installed. Ford has an online service to give detailed information to owners of newer trucks and vans like yours. I gave it a quick look but couldn't find a like web page from Chevy.
My Ford E-350 (also a 1 ton van) is a '95 and couldn't be researched oline. A dealer gave me a Ford phone number to their old VIN lookup service. A gentleman called back in a few days with my van's build sheet in front of him. Chevrolet probably has something similar. A Chevy dealer might even be able to provide the information.
Good Luck,
Bob

RE: Need anti-virus

I would advise against the paid version of AVG.
I bought it (7.5) almost 2 years ago and was very pleased. When the new version came out about a year ago, AVG wanted me to pay (again) for the 8.5 (or was that 8.0?- LOL!). I kept 7.5 even though it started having problems- "forgetting" updates and other silliness. In May AVG chose to dishonor their agreement and stop supporting version 7.5. They did allow me to down load 8.5.
What a joke. Version 7.5 scanned in about 2 hours or less. The new 8.5 takes over 4 1/2 hours AND uses a lot more rescources. More than half the time it crashed the computer. Its so bad I started turning the auto scans off when they start. Oh, I don't and won't leave my laptop turned on all night even if I thought it might actually complete a scan. All in all the pay version is a rip off- pretty much unusable on my XP machine. I do hope that at least the real time anti virus in working :E
So I've been following the last few antivirus threads to find a replacement for AVG. I don't mind paying. I do want a "real time" scanner and... well, I want what AVG used to be- neat, lean and actually works. I do not want a crash prone rescource hog like 8.5.
Anyway save your money. Avg free maybe, I had good luck with it. But the pay version is a dog.

RE: Version G 512 MB thumb drive 1.0

Anyone know of source for the 1.0 (know they are older) thumb drive so that I can have more than just one?
Bill
My local Target store has 256 meg drives at the registers for about $3. They HAD some 512's in the computer accessories/camera area a month or two back- about $10. And K-Mart still carries some older stock 1 Gig dongles too. On and off, a nearby "Big Lots" (closeout store) has some of the smaller/older thumb drives- 256's and 512's.
I think these are USB 2.0 but you could try one of the 256 meg drives for a song. It might work. I wonder if the newest multi-gig units are still backward compatable? A year or two ago I had problems with some of the 1 gig SD cards in my camera. I looked around and found enough 256's and 512's to keep it supplied. They cost as much as or more than the newer, larger cards.
You might find that a friend that has a couple laying around that are no longer used.
Good luck,
Bob

RE: TT thin cabinet plywood-where to buy it ?

I am looking for 1/8" thick stuff, and all the panels at Lowes or Home Depot is 1/4" thick, and some is 3/16", but I have never seen the 1/8" at either of those stores.
Jack L
Jack,
It depends on how much you need. If approximatly 36"+ by 80"+ pieces will work, ask for "door skins". They're just over 3'0x6'8 and usually available in luan. Oak and birch are around too. Look in your local phone book (or the nearest larger city) under "hardwood". One of the yards listed there should have them. Some Lowes/Home Depots can or will order door skins.
If you need 4'x8' sheets, they'll often have to be ordered. The same yards can handle that. Expect to pay about twice the 1/4" plywood price if you have to special order it. Some of the "wholesale" companies are flexible about selling to consumers.

RE: Carry your life on a thumb driver

Thanks for the heads up on the newer version.
I've been using portable apps for over a year(?) now and am very happy with them. I had OpenOffice on my last tower and my laptop so I put OO on 2 thumbdrives and keep them reasonably current with each other. When my laptop dies many of my files will ready for use on whatever machine I get- or the local library.
I've recently started using Firefox on a seperate thubdrive. Its OK. The speed is about the same or maybe a tad slower than the IE 6.0 on my laptop. Supposedly it leaves no tracks on the "host" machine. I've also switched to Thunderbird for email and it is great.
Maybe I'll leave OO alone on its drives and use the "atibi"(sp?) or lite version of the suite on another drive. I just hope I can import the settings from my stationary Thunderbird- a PITA to get straight with lavabit.com email sometimes.
Thanks again,
Bob

RE: Setting up a Home-base questions...

-snip-
I had already set up an account with MyDakotaAddress in Madison, SD. I overnighted my sale papers to them. A few days later I received my tags and registration in the mail from them.
My '99 American Eagle coach and '04 Dodge Dakota toad costs about $250.00 per year total for tags.
At this point my wife and I had 90 days to get to SD in person to obtain our driver's licenses and become SD residents.
We did this a couple of months later in March 08 on our way to Alaska. We did not have to take either a written or driving test for our licences, just a vision test and we walked out with our license cards.
-snip-
SD had no state income tax so no worries there. Also no vehicle inspections or special RV tests.
We had absolutely no problems doing things this way.
ChaosAgent
Thanks for the added information. I'm definately going to check South Dakota again. Your style of testimonial is clear and very helpful. MyDakotaAddress sounds like the type of place I'm after too.
As far as the vehicle and residency, I just want to do what ever is simple and cheap. M

That's it in a nutshell.

:B I understand. It's as much the annoyance as the money. I also pay local/city income tax. Each jurisdiction with an income tax sets it own rate. No matter where you live income is taxed at different rates depending on where it is earned. Oh Bother!
