RE: Setting up a Home-base questions...

Bob, I'm just curious why you have eliminated South Dakota from your consideration.
I am trying to decide between SD and Texas myself. My main reason for leaning towards SD is the Texas requirement to take a driving test in my motorhome. That's no problem, except I don't want to drive my rig all the way out there to do it. I planned on flying out and getting my drivers license then flying back to the east coast. Also, it seems the registration fees are a bit higher in Texas than SD, but I could be wrong on that.
Jetjam,
Nothing against South Dakota. It really about location. I may visit sometime but have no plans to do so in the near future. Of course, my desires may change but for now I'll be staying south of... Ohio anyway!;)
For most folks, since there is no personal income tax, the popular domicile states are pretty much the same. There are always going to be exceptions.
For instance, one individual used to make a habit of posting that they were cohabiting with another who was not their legal spouse. The Texas common law marriage statute would make that arrangement difficult. My divorce attorney thought one or the other was likely "skirting around" the stipulations of a spousal support decree. This couple chose a state other than Texas based on that specific issue. But for most of us one state is not going to be significantly better than another.
Unless you want to vaction there for a bit (nothing wrong with that), your cost to visit South Dakota for the license might offset most of the savings over say... Florida. But if you must drive your RV to a distant state before your official "move" just to take care of the paperwork, that gets real pricey really quick.
Tennessee was ideal for me- particularly the location. Either Florida and Texas would suit my needs. Florida has at least two fairly sizable mail forwarding services that are highly recommended and some others that are less well known. Florida may well be the most popular "domicile" state. Texas does seem to be pretty limited in the choice of mail forwarders.
On another related issue... Yesterday I received a post card from the Ohio EPA reminding me I need to pass a vehicle emmissions check before I can renew my registration...in AUGUST!! :M Your post reminded me I need to check ALL the popular "domicile" states once again. Thanks. Who knows, circumstances may have changed. If they have, I'm sure there's another seat on that bird.

RE: Folding Bike From Camping World...Reviews

We went to Camping World today and looked at their folding bikes. Anyone out there have one or know of anyone who does? I'm looking for first hand evaluations. Thanks
Here is a link to bikeforums.net's folding bike room. There should be plenty of unbiased reviews there. Many of those folks are pretty serious cyclists.
http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=221
And another to a search for "camping world" in that forum. It might not work- this site used to have the worlds worst search feature. It's been changed but maybe not fixed. ;)
http://www.bikeforums.net/search.php?searchid=6029322
I tried a folder once at a garsge sale (maybe a mile or so)- an older Dahon. It was OK. I did make very sure I brought it back before they sold the bike I rode to the sale! Those smaller wheels on Medina broken up city streets streets were... pretty bad.

RE: Setting up a Home-base questions...

Florida will be Doubling the Registration fees on ALL Vehicles the 1st of July and I've heard talk that FL will also be charging a special tax on visitors or those who do not show a Current Phone, Utilities and Cable/Satellite Bills and Voters Registration for Florida when they register or re-register their vehicles... Florida will also be checking the former states of registered vehicle owners to make sure there are not dual addresses.
Thanks for the heads up daytona7. I was planning on using St. Brendan's Isle in Green Cove Springs, FL. I'm still leaning that way but I need to check my options once again.
Can anyone recommend a reasonably "full service" Texas forwarder (in a no emissions test county) OTHER THAN escapees? I'm not real happy with the Texas vehicle inspections at all, but like Bumpy said, it goes in the "ALL of the negatives" column. You add them up for the different states to see which works best for you. The important thing is to have all the information.
Since Tennessee is now full time unfriendly, Florida and Texas are the only two I'm still considering.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: Lower cost/better coverage pre-paid option than TracPhone??

I just added airtime yesterday and did it over the phone just to see what options were available. There is no longer an option to change to a different local area. I did call from a phone local to my current tracfone number.
I don't know what would have happened if I'd called from another area code or just a distant part of the 330 area code.

RE: Lower cost/better coverage pre-paid option than TracPhone??

Just for reference...
TracPhone phone numbers and area codes can be changed pretty easily. I've changed mine at least three times. The problem is you can't get your old number back.
If you buy an airtime card at a store and use it over a landline the "update" will try to get you to change your number to a number local to that particular landline. When you called the 1 800 number on the "add minutes" sales slip there used to be an option to change your number and area code (again, landline required). I add minutes by computer now so I haven't called lately.
My TracPhone used to display the carrier when I checked for messages- just checked, it doesn't anymore. I seem to remember it was Sprint. I'm very happy with TracPhone.

RE: Free AGV ?

I used AVG Free for years with no problem.
In November 2007 I "bought" a 2 year license. I don't know if they're going to honor the last 7 months of that license or not.
Version 7.5 has become "buggy" in the last several months. I don't think there is any customer support at AVG- at least I haven't been able to contact them.
While I might let somebody else foot the bill for my anti-virus program (use the free version ;) ), I'll never give AVG money again.
On Edit: I haven't seen any pop-ups (maybe the anti pop-up software works!) or gotten any emails from AVG about a required upgrade. This is the only place I've seen anything about it.

RE: AVG anti virus

I have 7.5 AVG that expires in October. I keep getting notifications that after April 30th my 7.5 will no longer protect from any new virus and that I should update to 8.5.
It seems like I remember that people were having problems with the 8.5 update.
HELP please
I have an AVG 7.5 subscription (I paid) that expires in November. I haven't heard anything about dropping support. They've added "glitches" to 7.5 but it works, more or less. It seems they're trying to annoy folks into paying twice for the same product. Eliminating the support for which we've already paid does sound like something those... people would pull.
I would never buy anything from AVG again and expect a "Norton-like" mess trying to remove 7.5 in November.

At least it now comes with a little 'X' that works...
Come on over to the Trailer Life portal. It's still clean.
I haven't seen one of those little nasties in weeks and that was following a link that happened to go through an infected portal. I really thought the pop-ups had been eliminated.

RE: Another excellent Firefox Add-on

Thanks Dave.
I do occasionally want to look at site with annoying log in requirements. I've started playing with FireFox Portable. It is becoming... slightly less anoying with time. But it does work on a memory stick.
Oh, I looked through the site site belonging to the gentleman who wrote the firefox extension for BugMeNot. Gotta love a guy with his own Roasted Garlic Habaserrapeno Hot Sauce recipe on the opening page. He might need a few prayers if he ever actually eats any of that suff!
Thanks again,

RE: Problems with Woodall's 2009 CD Directory

..But, thanks for the "heads up" on the Adobe piece. I don't have any Adobe software on my PC given all the bloat that comes along with it. I use a Foxit reader which probably won't load and I have to wait for the timeout for the system to proceed. That would explain the 30 to 45 second delay in loading. Still not worth it to load the Adobe reader. I can read the book.
Bob
Thanks Bob and AstroRig57 for starting the topic and the reply. I was thinking of getting the CD also. No more.
Adobe doesn't have a place on my computer either.

RE: Recycled Pop-up

It looks like they did a nice job. Thanks for posting the pictures. If you see it again, how about some interior shots. :B
I see quite a few older pop ups without titles being "recycled" as flea market trailers. Owners tell me when they're "rebuilt" (no longer campers) you can get a new title pretty easily.

RE: Search Required before posting.

I think a better pop-up would come up when a member clicked on a newbie's question that said " no snide or degrading replies please."
LOL! I think pop ups are akin to viruses, but if you're going to have them... And if they can be made content sensitive...
Maybe one telling those who insist on repeatedly insrtructing folks to "Do a search/google/find" that they will get a one week "time-out" from posting! :B That might be worth the annoyance! :B :B
Bob
When I first started reading the forums, I immediatly was turned off by snide and or degrading remarks to individuals unfamilar questions,,then thought the remarks that seemed to be such may not have been intended that way. Not every normal human understands everything and has to be personally walked thru it, Just like my problem I have with posting pic's, but I'll figure it out without asking cause its another repeat which irratates some! So I'm always open to a private message but not to backing down to a good debate! thanks the forums are ( as tony says ) G R E A TTTT. signed- Bill.
It is sad that some have to go out of their way to make posters feel unwelcome. But these forums, unlike some other RV forums ;), do have a far greater number of helpful people that more than balance things out.
I still do kind of like Bigeking's idea- too bad about the pop ups though. Maybe a line down near the post message box. Heck, stick one down there about how impolite it is to tell folks to search rather than offering an useful answer. :) I can't speak to anothers intent. I do look at back posts to get an idea about an individual's general conduct.
I (more of less) learned to post pictures on a dog forum years ago. If I can be of help feel free to "PM".

RE: Beeping on the van??

Bamabound,
I'd try an auto parts store. They don't charge to hook it up to their code reader and read the trouble codes. Some still have OBD-1 code readers- you may have to try a couple of different places. My Ford van is a '95 (still OBD-1) and they can get a great deal of useful information from the vehicle's sensors.
There is a way to count flashes of... something to do the same thing. I've always been able to find a store with the reader and haven't had to resort to that.

RE: Recording Music on computer

What software are any of you using to record music onto your computer from a line output. I have a lot of music that I hae recorded from old records to my computer to put on my mP3 player but want to record it at a lower volume level and need some software that will let me record from a line output of one computer to line input of a 2nd computer and be able to monitor the volume setting so I can get all songs close to the same volume level. Right now some are a lot louder than others. Wondering what others are using, surely others have been doing this. Something witha level meter would also be great. TIA.
Papa Bob
I use the Nero Software that came with the purchased "converter" box to send LP's from my turntable to computer. I have played with Audacity and found it works very well.
Sch911 helpfully provided a link to the sourceforge site for downloading Audacity. Another kind soul in an earlier thread in this forum offered the following link:
Audacity Instructions
Its a page that explains recording from a tape player using Audacity. It shows how to "globally"(?) adjust the volume or normalize in Step 4. Personally, I would just copy the files to a portable drive to move from one computer to another.
When I played with Audacity from a tape player, I used a double ended male mini plug to go from the tape player's headphone jack to the computer's microphone input. If for some reason you don't want to or can't use a portable drive to transfer the music, the "mini plug" method should work from computer to computer too.

RE: erm... those fabled "Don't be a Lurker" annoyances?

I am as puzzled as your :h indicates. I just used the privacy tab of Internet Options to block all cookies. I could not log into any of the Open Roads portals, including Trailer Life. After returning the setting to Medium, I had no trouble logging in to Trailer Life and and RV.Net. After logging in to the Trailer Life portal, I changed the setting to High (block all cookies) and tried to make this post. The login screen was presented and I could not get past it until I changed the setting to allow cookies. (I used the Medium setting and didn't try anything between no cookies and the medium setting.) For this experiment, I also used IE 6.0.
So, my experience is exactly as the technicians say it is suppose to work. Perhaps some others will share their experience, if they block all cookies.
Tom
Hmmm.... velly interesting. I just changed my privacy settings to also block session cookies and tried to login- no go. With "session" cookies back on and everything worked as normal.
Where and what that session cookie is... I don't know. Good grief, now stealth cookies??? :B :B
I do occasionally see a cookie shown as "accepted" in the privacy report. Some of these I can block from the privacy report's "summary" window. Others are accepted until I stop accepting session cookies. I don't see anything listed as a cookie in the temporary iternet files either. Maybe somebody else knows the answer.
I do a "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files" from the Tools menu occasionally- every half hour(??). When you're on dial up you have a lot of time to click on things while the pages load! LOL! I also run IE Privacy Keeper before I "hibernate" or shut off the computer.
By the way (or back to the subject ;)), in the 10 minutes or so before I logged in, there were no "lurker" nasties on the trailer life portal.

RE: erm... those fabled "Don't be a Lurker" annoyances?

The Trailer Life portal is still free of "lurker" garbage. I'm still using IE6.0 and not accepting cookies.
Bob
It is my understanding that if you don't accept cookies from this forum, you cannot post.
Tom
:h I have "stored" cookies blocked. I've had my settings like that for quite some time. My privacy report shows 5 blocked cookies, including 2 from trailer life, 2 from infinity group/ realmedia, and one google-garbage.
There are no cookies listed as "accepted" but I do have my "privacy settings" set to allow session cookies. This site chooses not to use them or one of the blocked cookies is actually a "session" cookie and, like almost all of them, is unnecessary. If I notice a cookie "accepted" I usually block it to see what happens.
There are very, very, few sites that actually require cookies.

RE: USB Tuner for laptop

Thanks! I've wondering about those things.
Last year I was setting up at flea markets the day before (and camping overnight for free in my van :B). I'd watch a little TV at night. With the change over I've been wondering what I'd do. The price sounds pretty reasonable.

RE: Best free email?

My recomendation is for lavabit.com. You can use it as "web mail" but I access it with Thunderbird. It's a little like MyWay used to be. I might even try one of their pay accounts if they don't mess things up for a few months. :) It seems pretty secure. There's now way to tell how secure but if I use "web mail", I don't see ads that relate to the content of my "email! That's just sleezey.
I had hotmail years ago- then they started requiring cookies. Dropped it. I really don't need anybody's stinkin' cookies.
I still have three unrelated yahoo accounts- they're now requiring stored cookies (it used to be session cookies and web beacons or stored cookies) to access email. Now I only check the Yahoo boxes once a month or so on a library computer. I'd close them all except I have pictures (linked to forum posts) in associated Flickr accounts.
I have a few others for piddly stuff, like most website signups, and only check them a couple times a month. I used to use MyWay- it got bad. I realize you're looking for an offspring but, if you're a veteran you might want to get a military.com address. It's klunky, like all webmail, but it also allows PM's from old comrades. military.com notifies your "real" email addy of a message if you wish. I also use it to register for some website forums. They are cookie vendors (and popup pushers)- but I don't check it often.
Now gmail... do you really want the folks that put targeted ads all over the internet having access to your email too??? I guess there are a lot of google stockholders on these forums. ;) Heck it seems every other post is answered with, google this or that. LOL! For me Google is way too intrusive. I'm looking for a way to block google-garbage, not sign up for more! As far as I know they required stored cookies from the start of their service.
Bob
On Edit: None of my business but there used to be a few "born again" (?) type groups that offered free email. The rules were a little strict but maybe that's what you're looking for. I don't know if these are still around- the links are on an old computer. If your interested, just send a PM. Bob
