RE: 2013 Crew Cab 5.3 3.42 Ratio HD factory tow package Gas.

Assuming its a 6 spd tranny, you can't really look at rear end gearing the same. Your first gear is 4.03 to 1. Not looking at the torque convertor, just gearing, with 3:42 Diff gears your reduction is 13.78:1 in low gear. Compare that to a 1988 Silverado with T400 3 spd auto and 4:10 gears. (2.48 x 4.1) equals 10.17:1 in low. The gearing in your truck is 30% lower then an older truck with 4:10 gearing. Bonus is you have two overdrive gears to maximize fuel economy.

RE: Prices for a new roof.. Who knew?!

Once upon a time, I was parked in someones driveway, the kids were requiring extra attention and i did not get the front clamps on my popup TC set. A while later on the hyway I lost the entire roof. I picked the roof and all the parts I could find off the hyway, hoisted it back on and duct tapped and strapped everything. We tented for the rest of the trip. When we got home the quote to repair and re-attach the roof was $4,000. The insurance company wrote it off. I bought it back from them. I fixed it for $100 and continued to use it for another couple years. (it had an aluminum roof) I realize that doing it yourself is not for everyone but you may save yourself a bundle.

RE: How long can you boondock?

So far the longest was 4 days and everything fit in or on a 55 litre backpack. Multiple daily swims, Freeze dry rations,a water filter system. Only thing we run out of is booze. Just scale that up to a trailer. Only your comfort level limits your stay.

RE: Is this the right place to ask about TT hitches?

I can understand when pushing the limits of your vehicle and wanting to be safe on the hyways. Otherwise Princess Auto has a 1200 lb vertical, 12,000 trailer weight distributing hitch for $349.99. (weights 91 lbs.) I tow a much smaller travel trailer and a 7000 GVWR car hauler. Been using my Princess Auto 10,000 weight distributing hitch (got on sale for $89) for at least 5 years now.

RE: Generator

I consider standard AC for an RV as 13,500 BTU. Some newer smaller trailers now come with 5K to 8K BTU wall mount units.

RE: Extended Warranty On Trucks?

Had one vacation where we did 6,000 miles on a Van with 110K miles pulling an 8ft tent trailer. We went through a PS pump and a transmission on that Trip. Got lucky that both failures occurred in cities and so did not require expensive tows.

RE: Popup Campers and Bears

I always felt safe in my popup, especially being so high off the ground. We often used our TC for quick lunch stops without poping it up. Plenty of head room for sitting around the dinette, cooking and Fridge was accessible. If its just two of you and you find yourself in a situation of concern, you can always leave it folded and sleep on the dinette.

RE: Condensation building up in unit walls?

Due to having company at camp during hunting season I stayed in my 2011 trailer, filon, foam, aluminum. Not only did the walls sweat, especally the corners, but the matress was wet were it met the cold storage area underneath. I made sure to lift the matress so it would air out. I think you would need an air exchanger to vent excess humidity. I did not use the plumbing as it had been winterized already. A wood framed wall might do better. Whats interesting is, the next time I used the trailer I went equipped with some 1/2 inch rigid foam board for under the mattress and it still got wet with condensation.

RE: Does a slide make that much of a difference?

If its raining, we are sitting at the table playing cards. I can't ever recall a time when weather had caused us to feel cooped up and we have never had anything larger then a 8ft box tent trailer and a couple of truck campers while the kids were growing up. We never go camping without a tarp so we can still sit around the campfire and a dining tent so we can sit around the picnic table in all weather. I can recall a one month tent camping trip to BC when the kids were 6 and 9 and it rained for 4 days straight. Yes it was tarp city but the kids did not care. Rainy days are days to explore local attractions, get the laundry done, groceries. On the other hand, my mom basically full times in their trailer for 5 months of the year and so its their home and 4 tipouts work just great for them.

RE: How do you stop one from Porpoising

Make sure you try your fixes on Ashphalt and conrete. Some hyways are terrible and nothing you can do will fix it short of playing with Wheelbase which is impossible unless you have lots of trucks.

RE: Correct Battery Wire For Connecting Multiple Batteries?

people are confusing start battery wiring. Look at the size wire going to your trailer. Its about #10 and is good for 30 amps which is fine. Likely that your trailer charger, convertor is fused at 30 amps. I have separate #4 wire only going to my 1000 what pure sinewave invertor.

RE: Looking to buy our first Travel Trailer, Help Needed

Typical Travel trailers have couches and dinettes that convert to beds. I would imagine that a queen bed and two bunks should be fine.

Primary requirement was to keep the snow off my trailer. Logs were free and are mounted on concrete posts.

RE: Newbie Looking for Advice

Wow, first timer. How can you not be overwhelmed by the size of rig? Most people go tenting, tent trailer, small hard wall and eventually get to where you are now. If your first experience was effortless, you must have things set up well. Just remember to take it easy on your first trip as you will likely be carrying an extra 1000 lbs and maybe depending on the location of the water tanks the weight distribution will change.

RE: New Travel Trailer Purchase Advice

My last two RV were purchased at shows. There is only one model example brought into the show so you are not so likely to get the actual one at the show unless the dealer sell all his stock at the show. If they sell out, then you may get the Unit in the show. What I find is, if you go on the last day of the RV show you will see trailers locked up, because they have been sold and know one else is allowed to go through the trailer.
Some people have the patience to haggle back and forth for days. I prefer shows because they offer deep discounts without having to haggle.

RE: Sway with Load Range D and standard shocks

So are we talking about the truck leaning over too much on turns or are we talking about the truck rocking excessively as it goes down a straight road? If you are getting excessive sway going down a straight road, I would investigate the steering linkage, camber and toe in. I have had two truck TC combinations and they were both rock steady. Since you believe a front leveling block was installed, checking out the front end would be first on my list.

Look in your glove box and check out and report back what the manufacture says you can carry. They will have accounted for passengers and fuel.

Visited the area last September. Bring your patience when crossing the border south of Calgary. Check out the steam train from Hill City to Keystone. Enjoy the gambling machines in just about every place you go. Check out the open pit mine in Leads and the Casinos in Deadwood.
